Being proud of our heritage makes us care about how other people see us and
can spark many positive attributes within a person. In the short story “Borders”
by Thomas King, the mother is exceptionally proud of her indigenous heritage
and stands up for her identity, which highlights how proud she is. First off, The
mother refuses to give in to the cultural division imposed by the guards. When
the guard asks the mother if she's on the “Canadian side or American side?”,
she replies with “Blackfoot side”, not giving in to their cultural assimilation. The
mother's refusal to cooperate shows her stance on her heritage will not change.
She will only identify as Blackfoot and not give a response that the guards want
to hear, illustrating how proud she is. Secondly, the mother made it clear that
both she and her son were Blackfoot by wearing attire which represented her
culture. The mother emphasizes this when her son was “surprised when she
bought two new tires for the car and put on her blue dress with the green and
yellow flowers. I had to dress up, too, for my mother did not want us crossing
the border looking like Americans.” This demonstrates the mother's pride, as
she wants the guards at the border to know she's a proud Blackfoot who is not
afraid to show it. Finally, the mother perseveres through all the tension
between herself and the American guards. When her son says “I thought we
were going home, but she turned the car around and drove back toward the
American border, which made me think we were going to visit Laetitia in Salt
Lake City after all. Instead she pulled into the parking lot of the duty-free store
and stopped.”, it establishes that the mother won't be giving up on crossing the
border any time soon. The mother doesn't compromise her values or pride and
continues to pass the border despite the guard's discrimination, reinforcing
how proud she is. In summary, The mother can be described as proud,
deliberately showing off her pride in her Blackfoot heritage and ignoring any
discrimination towards her.
