Seeking a competitive advantage, some professional service firms (for example, firms providing advertising
accounting, or health care services) have considered offering unconditional guarantees of satisfaction. Such
guarantees specify what clients can expect and what the firm will do if it fails to fullfill these expectations. Particularly
with first-time clients, an unconditional guarantee can be an effective marketing tool if the client is very cautious, the
firms fees are high, the negative consequences of bad service are grave, or business is difficult to obtain through
referrals and word-of-mouth.
However, an unconditional guarantee can sometimes hinder marketing efforts. With its implication that failure is
possible, the guarantee may, paradoxically, cause clients to doubt the service firm's ability to deliver the promised
level of service. It may conflict with a firm's desire to appear sophisticated, or may even suggest that a firm is begging
for business. In legal and health care services, it may mislead clients by suggesting that lawsuits or medical
procedures will have guaranteed outcomes.Indeed, professional service firms with outstanding reputations and
performance to match have little to gain from offering unconditional guarantees. And any firm that e commitment to
quality of service is merely employing a potentially costly implements an unconditional guarantee without undertaking
a commensurate implements an unconditional guarantee without undertaking a commensurate commitment to quality
of service is merely employing a potentially costly marketing gimmick.

Some observers have attributed the dramatic growth in temporary employment that occurred in the United States
during the 1980s to increased participation in the workforce by certain groups, such as first-time or reentering
workers, who supposedly prefer such arrangements. However, statistical analyses reveal that demographic changes
in the workforce did not correlate with variations in the total number of temporary workers. Instead, these analyses
suggest that factors affecting employers account for the rise in temporary employment. One factor is product
demand: temporary employment is favored by employers who are adapting to fluctuating demand for products
while at the same time seeking to reduce overall labor costs. Another factor is labor’s reduced bargaining strength,
which allows employers more control over the terms of employment. Given the analyses, which reveal that growth
in temporary employment now far exceeds the level explainable by recent workforce entry rates of groups said to
prefer temporary jobs, firms should be discouraged from creating excessive numbers of temporary positions.
Government policymakers should consider mandating benefit coverage for temporary employees, promoting pay
equity between temporary and permanent workers, assisting labor unions in organizing temporary workers, and
encouraging firms to assign temporary jobs primarily to employees who explicitly indicate that preference

The modern multinational corporation is described as having originated when the owner-managers of nineteenth-
century British firms carrying on international trade were replaced by teams of salaried managers organized into
hierarchies. Increases in the volume of transactions in such firms are commonly believed to have necessitated this
structural change. Nineteenth-century inventions like the steamship and the telegraph, by facilitating coordination
of managerial activities, are described as key factors. Sixteenth-and seventeenth—century chartered trading
companies, despite the international scope of their activities, are usually considered irrelevant to this discussion:
the volume of their transactions is assumed to have been too low and the communications and transport of their
day too primitive to make comparisons with modern multinationals interesting
In reality, however, early trading companies successfully purchased and outfitted ships, built and operated offices
and warehouses, manufactured trade goods for use abroad, maintained trading posts and production facilities
overseas, procured goods for Import, and sold those goods both at home and in other countries. The large volume of
transactions associated with these activities seems to have necessitated hierarchical management structures well
before the advent of modern communications and transportation. For example, in the Hudson's Bay Company, each
far-flung trading outpost was managed by a salaried agent, who carried out the trade with the Native Americans,
managed day-to-day operations, and oversaw the post's workers and servants. One chief agent, answerable to the
Court of Directors in London through the correspondence committee, was appointed with control over all of the
agents on the bay
The early trading companies did differ strikingly from modern multinationals in many respects. They depended
heavily on the national governments of their home countries and thus characteristically acted abroad to promote
national interests. Their top managers were typically owners with a substantial minority share, whereas senior
managers’ holdings in modern multinationals are usually insignificant. They operated in a preindustrial world,
grafting a system of capitalist international trade onto a premodern system of artisan and peasant production.
Despite these differences however, early trading companies organized effectively in remarkably modern ways and
merit further study as analogues of more modern structures
