Multimedia: Audio or Video Lesson Idea

Lesson Idea Name:   The Solar System

Grade Level/Content Area:  Fourth Grade Science
Content Standard Addressed:

S4E1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to compare and contrast the
physical attributes of stars and planets.

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed:    What would you like students to know and be
able to do by the end of this lesson:
Empowered Learner:  - Students will be introduced to our solar system.
1.1.c.
Students use technology to seek feedback that - Students understand the differences between
informs and improves their practice and to stars and planets.
demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.
   - Students will be able to describe planets based
   on size and appearance.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?
The student’s learning goal for this lesson is to know all eight planets by name and in order, as well as
describe the planet’s characteristics and structure. The learning outcome also involves students
recognizing the difference between planets and stars.

Selected Instructional Software Tool: Spotify for Podcasters

Description of Software: The software Spotify for Podcasters allows users to upload audio files
online. Podcasts can be downloaded, paused, and rewound to allow listeners to listen at their own
pace.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐  Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☐  Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

Multimedia: Audio or Video Lesson Idea

☒  Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast,
posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an
outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:
Students will use technology before the lesson plan to introduce them to the topic. The lesson will be
introduced through a podcast introduction. The introduction will cover previous knowledge learned
and ask questions that allow the students to think about the solar system so that they are aware of
their learning objectives. Once the lesson is done students will be able to utilize technology by getting
the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and create their own podcasts or videos. The teacher
will be available to assist the students if they desire help while they work on their demonstrations.
Feedback will be complimented for the student’s efforts, given for the correct marks, and then end in a
compliment on their overall efforts. We will conclude the lesson by allowing students to share their
presentations with peers.

Managing student learning:
The tools used for this lesson will cause students to shift in behavior from passive learners to active social
learners as they are given the opportunity to interact and apply the learned knowledge. Before students can
access technology, they will be required to submit a storyboard so that they have a plan ready to set in motion. I
will have time limits for tasks to be accomplished to maintain students to remain on task.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you are
focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation, or
Multiple Means of Action & Expression.
This tool supports Multiple Means of Action and Expression, and it enhances the learning experience
for all students.  Using multimedia tools for students to demonstrate and apply what they learned
through audio or video allows them to have several ways to deliver what they learned, in doing so they
will feel empowered as they are given the freedom to decide how they want to approach and deliver.
Reflection:
After designing this lesson idea, I feel the activities I created will impact student learning by building up
their self-confidence and increasing their knowledge of technology. I am eager and excited to see the
creativity that the students will apply when delivering their own multimedia presentations, as they can
express themselves and that allows me to know and understand their learning preferences well.
