Title: Introduction to Operating Systems

Grade Level: Grade 11

Duration: 120 minutes

Date: May 10, 2023

I. Objectives

 Students will be able to define what an operating system (OS) is and what its main functions
are.
 Students will be able to identify the different types of operating systems.
 Students will be able to explain the differences between the different types of operating
systems.

II. Materials

 Whiteboard and markers


 Computers or mobile devices with various operating systems installed (e.g. Windows, MacOS,
iOS, Android, Linux)

III. Procedures

A. Preliminaries

 Greet the class and introduce the topic of operating systems.


 Ask students if they know what an operating system is and if they have used any different
types of operating systems.

B. Recall

 Review with the students the basic functions of a computer system.

C. Motivation

 Explain the importance of operating systems in modern computer systems.


 Discuss how different operating systems are designed to meet the needs of different types
of devices and users.

D. Activity

 Distribute a handout with a list of different types of operating systems, including


Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android, and Linux.
 Ask students to work in pairs or small groups to research and create a brief summary of
the features and functions of one of the operating systems on the list.
 Ask each group to present their findings to the class.
E. Analysis

 Lead a class discussion on the different types of operating systems and their functions.
 Ask students to compare and contrast the different types of operating systems, including
their advantages and disadvantages.

F. Abstract

 Summarize the key concepts related to operating systems.


 Ask students to write a brief paragraph summarizing what they learned during the lesson.

G. Application

 Have students work in pairs or small groups to research and present on how operating
systems are used in different types of devices, such as desktop computers, laptops,
tablets, and mobile phones.

H. Generalization

 Ask students to reflect on how the information they learned in the lesson can be applied
in their own lives and future careers.

IV. Evaluation

 Assess student understanding of the key concepts related to operating systems through
their class participation and their ability to complete the handout.

V. Assignment

 Ask students to research and write a short paper on the evolution of operating systems
over the years, and how they have impacted the development of computing.
