Golconde in Pondicherry

• It might be easily overlooked from the street, but walk through the
singular discreet wooden door with a lotus engraving on it, and it
stands tall as if in silent contemplation. This modernist beauty, the first
reinforced-concrete structure in India, predating Chandigarh’s and
Ahmedabad’s modern architecture, was designed by American
architect Antonin Raymond and later completed by George
Nakashima, who also became a member of the ashram. Nakashima’s
fine wood furniture is in use throughout the rooms.
• Cold stone floors, gnarly banyan trees, lily ponds, black earthen
pottery used as vessels for water, and the entire length of the building
fitted with hundreds of louvres that, when opened, expose the interiors
to breeze, to rain, to the atmosphere outside, as if there is no building,
only a suggestion of it—an experience of lightness quite unexpected
in a concrete structure.
• Raymond’s proposal to construct a reinforced concrete building was
without precedent in Pondicherry. The construction of this innovative
structure would require detailed architectural and engineering
drawings.
• Beyond the boundary wall, the partially excavated ground floor serves
as the functional hub of the dormitory, containing dining, storage and
laundry facilities. This siting allows the residential upper floors—lifted
above the ornamental pool, and encircled by a garden—to remain
undisturbed by the routine of arrivals and departures.
• Enforced isolations, mediated encounters, and filtered interfaces have
become the norm.
• Golconde is one such exemplar of calm. Created during another
tumultuous time of human suffering—the onset of the Second World
War—this building continues to offer succor to its residents, even from
this latest upheaval.

Modern Tropical Architecture

- Modern tropical House is a work of architecture that is able to adapt in
a tropical climate with a touch of construction materials that adopt the
modern and traditional architecture (in the tropics). Because at the bottom
of the traditional architecture is able to adapt to the tropical climate, it is to
produce a modern tropical architecture, and it can refer to the architecture
in the traditional way:

1. The angle of the inclination of the roof, when using a tile roof covering
materials.
2. Long overhang
3. The creation of a ventilation crusade at home to reduce humidity and hot air
temperature.
4. The correct direction of the orientation of the building.

- From these basic principles can be developed or aligned with the

existing construction technologies. So that it is going to create
various forms of expression, could vernacular, modern tropical etc,
resist tropical, but it could also result in a modern prime approach very
ultra appearance basis or solid Platonic form, but should still be based
on the basic principles of the tropical House.

- Partnerships for the Goals

Climate Action
• Goal 13 calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its
impacts. It is intrinsically linked to all 16 of the other Goals of the 2030
Agenda for Sustainable Development. To address climate change,
countries adopted the Paris Agreement at the COP21 in Paris on 12
December 2015. The Agreement entered into force less than a year
later. In the agreement, all countries agreed to work to limit global
temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius, and given the grave
risks, to strive for 1.5 degrees Celsius.
• Climate change is now affecting every country on every continent. It is
disrupting national economies and affecting lives, costing people,
communities and countries dearly today and even more tomorrow.
• The severe effects of climate change, such as altered weather patterns,
increasing sea levels, and more extreme weather events, are already
being felt by people. People are experiencing the significant impacts of
climate change, which include changing weather patterns, rising sea
level, and more extreme weather events. The greenhouse gas
emissions from human activities are driving climate change and
continue to rise. They are now at their highest levels in history. Without
action, the world’s average surface temperature is projected to rise over
the 21st century and is likely to surpass 3 degrees Celsius this
century—with some areas of the world expected to warm even more.
The poorest and most vulnerable people are being affected the most.
