INTRODUCTION

Climate change is one of the most alarming issues in the world today. Even the
USA, Great Britain, China, Russia, France and many other rich countries were
intimidated with the ill-effects of this environmental problem.
One way to combat this, according to scientists around the globe, is to be aware
of our actions not to destroy the environment. Illegal and undeliberate actions among
human beings to cope with modernization and industrialization contributed much to
this global problem. To name a few, illegal logging, quarrying, mining, use of
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) excessive production and overconsumption are among
others.
As such, as a Senior High School student, you must be aware of your personal
actions that will lead to solving our problem on climate change without compromising
our modern ways of living in coping with the 21st century world.

through the lesson.

Climate Change
Climate change refers to the increase in average surface temperatures on
Earth. An amazing scientific accord highlighted that global climate change is due
primarily to the human use of fossil fuels, that releases dioxide and alternative
greenhouse gases into the air. The gases trap heat inside the atmosphere, which may
have a variety of effects on ecosystems resulting to:
(a) rising ocean levels;
(b) severe weather events; and
(d) droughts resulting to wildfires.

(HUMSS_MCT12-Ih-i-4)
The food consumption and production have a major impact on the
surroundings. Our tendency to consume has direct and indirect impacts on the
surroundings. An example of this consumption is that the use of energy in our homes
like television, radio, computer, cars and public utility jeepney that emit harmful gasses
and caused pollution and increased emissions of greenhouse gases that resulted in
global climate change.
Consumption conjointly vie an indirect impact towards our surroundings from
the assembly, process and transportation of the products that we have a tendency to
consume daily. Examples of these goods that we consume are the canned goods, soft
drinks, processed foods, shampoo and many more.
The consumption and production pattern within the Philippines, along with the
emissions of greenhouse gasses, indicators on pollution and also the generation of
material discovered that each one indicators show environmental degradations. (Sta.
Romana, 2017).
Below are simple ways to help care our environment

Use Reusable • Bring reusable bag when you buy groceries, food, and
luggage garment.
Plastic grocery-type luggage that were thrown out in
landfills takes years to decompose.

Print as very little • Using such a lot of paper is damaging to the atmosphere.
as Necessary If possible recycle the utilization writing of paper for
printing. Print on either side of the page to reduce the
number of paper used.

Recycle • Segregate recyclables from your non-recyclables

materials like cans, bottles, plastic and papers.

Use a Reusable • In most food stalls, fruit juices are served in plastic cups.
Nutrient Containers Use reusable containers for fruit juices and other drinks. In
school, the use of water dispensers could be a
replacement for plastic water bottles.

Save Electricity! • Use energy-efficient light-weight bulbs rather than regular

bulbs. They last longer, which can save your money. Turn
off lights, TV, and other appliances when not in use.

Save Water • Turn off the faucet when you're brushing your teeth. Limit
your water usage as you wash dishes and when taking a
bath.

Avoid Taking Cars • Taking public transportation, walking, or riding a

or Carpool as motorcycle are better options. You can save money, as
possible well as getting some exercise.

Discuss personal contributions that can actually solve the problem of climate change. (HUMSS_MCT12-Ih-i-3)

(HUMSS_MCT12-Ih-i-4)
Carbon footprints contribute to the increasing pollution in our environment
which eventually resulted to climate change. It is the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2)
emitted in the atmosphere by individual persons and other entities (e.g., building,
corporation, industry, etc.). This includes direct emissions, such as those that result
from fossil-fuel combustion in manufacturing, heating, and transportation, as well as
emissions required to produce the electricity associated with goods and services
consumed. Furthermore, the carbon footprint concept also includes the emissions of
other greenhouse gases, such as methane, nitrous oxide, or chlorofluorocarbons
(CFCs).
Can you imagine the amount of carbon emissions you have even in just one
day? The moment you open your phone, you leave a carbon footprint. The moment
you ride your motorcycle you already contribute to the amount of carbon emissions on
air. The moment you eat your snacks, you are indirectly leaving your carbon footprint.
All things that we consume that use fossil fuels and machineries for their production
produces carbon emissions and other harmful materials that pollute our environment.
In order to address this pressing issue, countries in the world have come into
agreement to combat the ill-effects of climate change because of our carbon footprints.
There are a number of agreements that has been initiated up to the present. The latest
is the Paris Agreement.

The Paris Agreement is a momentous environmental accord in 2015 that was

embraced by nearly every nation to address climate change and its negative impacts.
The deal aims to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions in an effort to limit the global
temperature increase in the 21st century to 2 degrees celsius above preindustrial
levels, while pursuing means to limit the increase to 1.5 degrees. The agreement
includes commitments from all major emitting countries to cut their climate-altering
pollution and to strengthen those commitments over time. The agreement provides a
way for developed nations to assist developing nations in their climate mitigation and
adaptation efforts. It also creates a framework for the transparent monitoring,
reporting, and ratcheting up of countries’ individual and collective climate goals.
Other climate agreements were the Copenhagen Accord and the Kyoto
Protocol. The Copenhagen Accord is a voluntary agreement between the United
States, China, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Russia and hundreds more making up over
80% of the global population and over 85% of global emissions.
This agreement is similar to the Kyoto Protocol, except that each country’s
acceptance and participation is not mandatory. Also, each country will commit to report
their changes.
The agreement is on a goodwill basis and assumes that each country will live
up to their part in saving the climate by reducing greenhouse gases.
On December 18, 2009, it was signed into agreement with more than 180
countries pledging their support. If all of the countries who have signed the contract to

date were to live up to their end of the bargain, the greenhouse gas levels would be
significantly reduced.
Consequently, a reduction in greenhouse gases, which are responsible for the
greenhouse effect would slow down global warming which contributes to several
catastrophic disasters including heat waves, droughts, hurricanes, and desertification.

10 Possible Solutions for Climate Change

Madaan (2018) suggested that there is a solution to each problem, and
suggested possible solutions to climate change namely:

Stop Cutting down Trees Cutting down trees is the prime reason of the climate
change. Planting new trees can quickly scale back
the speed of the emission of gases.
Control Population If the population is controlled, then climate change
can also be controlled. Additional demand of
resources like food and shelter resulted in additional
usage or utilization of the earth.
Less use of Fossil Fuels The high discharges of the greenhouse gases are
destroying the ozone layer which gives global
warming. It is then one of the major causes of
climate change.
Unplug your Devices In almost every house, there are at least a dozen of
appliances which includes air conditioner, television,
microwave, washing machine and others. These
devices lead to global warming.
Focus on Renewable Energy Fossil fuels are going to be used up in an
exceedingly few decades and it's time to maneuver
towards the renewable energy. Several cities are
using the energy from the renewable sources which
incorporates wind, solar, tidal, ocean and
geothermal.
Control of Methane Leaks Methane is a more potent greenhouse gas than
carbon dioxide. Every month, there is a huge
quantity of methane leak from pipeline, storage
tanks, other infrastructure, garbage dumps and coal
mines.
Tougher Emissions and Most of the harmful gases are released either by
Efficiency Standards automobiles or power plants. Many countries have
already put strict rules in controlling the emissions.
Experimenting the Earth There are many experiments being done which
might control climate change. Some ideas like, Geo-
engineering, radical interventions to either block

sunlight or reduce greenhouse gas are probably the
last options to control the climate change
Upgrade in infrastructure Upgrade in infrastructure like, making roads,
improving cement-making processes and investing
in new infrastructure or upgrading existing highways
and transmission lines would cut emission of
greenhouse gas and control climate change.
Personal Solutions to Global There are many steps which everyone can take in
Warming order to control the climate change. A small step by
anyone can make a big difference.
• Drive less and cycle more while going to
school or work.
• Upgrade your refrigerator and air conditioner,
especially if they are more than five years.
