CONSOLIDATION LEARNING CAMP

Science Grade 7, Lesson No. 16
Topic: It is Time to Accelerate!

I. Overview of the Activity

The activity is entitled “Fun Walk, Fun Run”
Students can make use of their scientific knowledge outside the classroom in an
engaging experiment. But, they should have a basic physics first. The equation
used to calculate the speed of an object is speed equals distance divided by time.
The equation to calculate acceleration is the change in speed (or velocity) divided
by the change in time.

II. Materials
Tape measure, metersticks, stop watch, masking tape, paper, pen

III. Procedures

Get Ready! The students will be working in pairs.

Step 1: Gather your materials.

Each pair needs the above listed materials.

Step 2: Create your race track!

Find a spot in the field or oval and measure a specified distance given by
the teacher as your race track. Use pieces of tape to mark the initial and
the end of your track.

Step 3: Go for it!

Using a stopwatch, each pair will time each other while walking in a
specified distance (the teacher can decide a specific distance to travel) to calculate
their speed of motion. Then, they will start looking at their acceleration by starting
from a walk and moving into a run.
Record your individual results in a table shown below and determine
which person can move the fastest.
