- are chemical substances required by the body to sustain basic functions and are optimally obtained
by eating a balanced diet.
2. What are the six nutrient categories? Which nutrients are termed the “energy nutrients?
- carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water.
- Carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are also referred to as energy-yielding macronutrients because
they supply the body with energy. Vitamins and minerals are micronutrients, which are required in
the body in smaller amounts in comparison to macronutrients.

- Proteins, lipids (mostly fats and oils), carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and water are essential
