I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standard The learner demontrate understanding of various linguistic nodes to
comprehend various textx., demontrates undertanding of text types to
listen for different purposes from a variety of texts and demonstrates
understanding of text types in order to construct feedback.

B. Performance Standard The learner analysis text types to effectively understand


information/message(s), uses linguistic cues to effectively construct
meaning from a variety of texts for a variety of purposes and use literacy
and informational text heard to construct an appropriate feedback.

C. Learning Competency LEARNER’S PACKET (LeaP)


Infer the speaker’s tone, mood and purpose.

D. Objectives At the end of 50-minute period, students will be able to:


a. determine the tone, mode, and purpose of the author in
the short stories given;
b. appreciate the importance of the lesson through
participation; and
c. differenciate the tone, mood, and purpose of the author.

Inferring the speaker’s tone, mood, and


purpose may be done by determining the
purpose of the author in writing the selection.

Tone – Expresses the attitude the author has


towards the subject or topic of the poem.

Examples: hopeful, affectionate, angry,


impatient, worried

I only have five peosos. How can i ride a

Mood – Athmosphere or the emotion that


arouses in a reader. Based on the
characters, setting or plot of the story.
Example: lonely, happy, scary, thankful

Lina was walking in the dark ally. Suddenly,


a man appeared infront of her. (scary)

Purpose – The reason an author writes


about a topic.

3 Type’s of Author’s Purpose

1. To Inform
To give information about a subject, like
encyclopedias and magazines.

2. To Entertain
To amuse or delight, like fairytails and
comics.

3. To Persuade
To convince the reader, like editorial and
top ten.

Each group will determine the tone, mood,
and the purpose of the author and choose 2
representatives to report to the class.

Group 1: The Fox and the Grapes

One afternoon a fox was walking through


the forest and spotted a bunch of grapes
hanging from over alofy branch.
“Just the thing to quench my thirst,” he
thought.
Taking a few steps back, the fox jumped
and just missed the hanging grapes. Again
the fox took a few paces back and tried to
reach them but still failed.
Finally, giving up, the fox turned up his
nose and said, “they’re probably sour
anyway,” and proceeded to walk away.

Group 2: The Foolish Donkey


A salt seller used to carry the salt bag on
his donkey to the market everyday.
On the way they had to cross a stream.
One day the donkey suddently tumbled down
the stream and the salt bag also fell into the
water. The salt dossloved in the water and
hence the bag came very kight to carry. The
donkey was happy.
Then the donkey started to play the same
trick everyday.
The salt seller came to understand the trick
and decided to teach a lesson to it. The next
day he loaded a cotton bag on the donkey.
Again it played the same trick hopping that
the cotton bag would be still become lighter.
But the dumped cotton became very heavy
to carry and the donkey suffered. It learned
the lesson. Id didn’t play the trick anymore
after that day, and the seller was happy.

Group 3: The Greedy Lion

It was an incredibly hot day, and a lion was


feeling very hungry. He came out of his den
and searched here and there. He could find
only a small hare. He cought the hare with
some hesitation. “The hare fill my stomach”
thought the lion.
As the lion was about to kill the hare, a deer
ran that way. The liom became greedy. He
thought;
“instead of eating a small hare, let me eat
the big deer”.
He let the hare go and went behind the
deer. But the deer had vanished into the
forestr. The lion now felt sorry for letting the
hare off.

Group 4: Two Friends & The Bear

Vijay and Raju were friends. On a holiday


they went walking into a forest, enjoying the
beauty of nature. Suddenly, they saw a bear
coming at them. They became frighteted.
Raju, who knew all about climbing trees,
ran up to a tree and climbed up quickly. He
didn’t think of Vijay. Vijay had no idea how to
clim the tree.
Vijay thought for a second. He’d heard
animals don’t prefer dead bodies. So he fell
to the ground and held his breath. The bear
sniffed him thought he was dead. So, it went
on its way.
Raju asked Vijay; what did the bear whisper
into your ears?
Vijay replied. “the bear asked me to keep
away from friends like you”..... and went on
his way.

• Generalization

It is very important to infer spoeaker’s tone,


mood, and purpose because it will help us
reader or listener to understand what they
want to emphasize and what is the message
they want to let us know.
