Let’s Recap!
1. What are the TWO types of mixtures?
● Homogeneous and Heterogeneous mixtures
2. What is the compound name of C2H6O?
● Alcohol
3. What is the compound formula of Ammonia?
● NH3
4. What is the compound formula for 2 Carbon + 4 Hydrogen + 2 Oxygen?
● C2H4O2
5. What are the General Properties of Mixtures?
● Keep their original properties.
● Separation is easy.
● Proportion of the components is variable.

Objectives 2

● Understand the two main groupings of

elements as metals and non-metals;
● Differentiate metals and non-metals,
referring to their physical properties.
+
Metal Elements
● The majority elements
in the periodic table
are metals.
● This includes alkali
metals, transition
metals, lanthanides,
actinides and alkaline
earth metals.
Non-metal Elements
● Nonmetals are (usually)
poor conductors of heat
and electricity, and are not
malleable or ductile.
● Many of the elemental
nonmetals are gases at
room temperature, while
others are liquids and
others are solids.
2
Physical Properties
Metal Elements Non-metal Elements

● Shiny (lustrous) in nature ● Poor conductors of electricity

● Metal is a good conductor of and heat
electricity and heat ● Non-Ductile metals
● Density and melting point is high ● Brittle solids
● Mouldable (Malleable) ● Maybe solids, liquids or gases at
● Ductile room temperature
● At room temperature, it is in solid ● These are not sonorous
form except for mercury ● Transparent
● Opaque

Chemical Properties
Metal Elements Non-metal Elements

● Easily corrodible (destroy) ● The number of electrons in

● Can lose electrons the outer shell is generally
● Form basic oxides 4-8
● Have low electronegativities ● Easily gain or lose valence
● Good reducing agents electrons
● Form acidic oxides whenever
they come in contact with
oxygen
● High electronegative
elements
● Great oxidizing agents
Let’s Read!
1. Read the “Science in Context” in your textbook, page
92-93.
2. After reading, answer the following guide questions on
your notebook:
a. What is graphite?
b. What are the name of two professor’s discovered
graphene?
c. What is graphene?
Physical Properties of Materials
Surface Appearance

Shiny Dull Rough Smooth

Physical Properties of Materials

Rigid
● It cannot be bent or
squashed.
Physical Properties of Materials

Flexible
● It can be bent or
squashed and can back
to its original shape.
Physical Properties of Materials

Hard or Soft
● Hard surface which
makes the materials
rigid and sponge soft
feeling due to
flexibility.
Physical Properties of Materials
Malleability
● A malleable material can be shaped by hammering or by pressing,
without the material cracking.
● Golds silver and copper are malleable. They can bent to form such as
necklaces, bangles and earrings.
Physical Properties of Materials
Absorbent
● Absorbent materials has
holes in its surface through
which water can pass and
spaces inside where the
water can collect.
● Sandstone, limestone are
absorbent rocks since they
have holes called pores.
Physical Properties of Materials
Waterproof
● It is the material that won’t less the
water pass through it.
● Water-resistant materials - made of
fibres through which the water could
pass. But if it’s coated with silicon,
water won’t pass through. Used to make
umbrellas, outdoor jackets and
trousers.
● Water repellent materials - doesn’t
have any holes, used to make rain
boots.
Physical Properties of Materials
Transparent
● It lets the light pass through it
without the light rays being
scattered.
● We can see objects clearly in a
transparent materials.
● Air and water are transparent
materials.
● But in solid, glass and plastic
materials are examples of
transparent materials.
Physical Properties of Materials

Translucent
● It lets light pass through but the
light rays are scattered.
● We cannot see the materials
clearly.
● Use to make bathroom
windows.
Physical Properties of Materials

Opaque
● Opaque materials do not let
the light pass through.
● Opaque materials are useful
in making sunshades.
Physical Properties of Materials
Heat Conductor
● It allows the heat to
pass through it.
Physical Properties of Materials
Heat Insulator
● It does not let the heat pass
through it because the heat
particles do not pass easily from
one to net.
● Good insulators are also known
as bad conductors.
Physical Properties of Materials

Electrical Conductor
● It allows the electrical current to flow.
Physical Properties of Materials

Electrical Insulator
● It does not allow the electrical current to flow.
Property Profiles
+

● It is the description of a material in terms of its properties.

● What are the things we need to check if we are looking
for flexible materials?
○ Shape of materials
● What are the things we need to check if we are looking
for transparent materials?
○ If the light passes through, but the light rays are not
scattered.
