Episode 11

Yasi: Welcome to the eleventh episode of This is English Around Town!

Nikoo: In this course we aim to teach you things that can help you use English in a
more practical way when in a city as a tourist or as an immigrant.

Yasi: An immigrant is someone who has immigrated to a new place. For example,
there are a lot of Iranian immigrants in Canada.

Nikoo: By now, you know how to ask for address, use the subway, eat out, talk to a
doctor, and even rent and drive a car.

Yasi: So let’s go through some of the things we’ve had so far and review them.

Nikoo: Answer the questions after the beep.

Yasi: Who is a dermatologist?

Nikoo: What is a blockbuster?

Yasi: What is handbrake?

Nikoo: How many mirrors does a car have? Name them.

Music

Yasi: OK, that is all! You’ve learned so much in this course, right?

Nikoo: Yeah, you learned so much! And we are going to conclude everything in this
lesson.

Yasi: Yeah, this is actually the final lesson of the course. We are going to learn some
more words and expressions related to cities and towns and then it will be time to
say goodbye!

Nikoo: But wait! We have two more lessons to go!

Yasi: Yeah, yeah. But they are not part of the lesson. The next episode is a surprise
and the final episode is actually the final test.

Nikoo: Next episode is going to be so much fun!

Yasi: So in the previous lessons we talked about cars and driving and renting a car.
But you don’t always need to own a car around town. You can use the public trans-
portation like we did in the first lesson.

Nikoo: You can also hail a cab using a taxi app. Or you can just hail a taxi on the
street.

Yasi: So listen to the following conversation and see how you should talk to a taxi
driver.

Driver: Where am I taking you?

B: I need to go to Casa Loma.

Driver: That’s no problem.

B: How long is it going to take you?

Driver: With traffic it’ll take 25 minutes.

B: Do you think you can get there more quickly?

Driver: I can’t get there any faster.

B: How much will the fare be?

Driver: It will be more, because there’s traffic.

B: That’s crazy.

Driver: If you give me $30, I’ll take you there.

Music

Yasi: I can’t believe taxi fares rise just because of traffic!

Nikoo: Yeah, I guess……….

Yasi: And where is Casa Loma? You wanna go there?

Nikoo: Yeah, it is a mansion and garden in midtown Toronto. It is now a historic

house museum. Look at its photos here.

Yasi: Oh, wow! It’s beautiful! It’s like a castle!

Nikoo: Yeah, but is a mansion. A mansion is like a very large house, like those hous-
es that Hollywood celebrities live in. They’re all mansions!

Yasi: Ha ha! I got it! But I’m not interested in visiting old mansions. I am more into

modern city structures and buildings. You know, like overpasses, footbridges and
skyscrapers.

Nikoo: An overpass is a part of a highway and looks like a bridge, and a footbridge
is a bridge for pedestrians and a skyscraper is a very tall building, right?

Yasi: Exactly, there is a picture of an overpass, footbridge and skyscraper in the

pdf file.

Nikoo: Wow! You must be into architecture, then.

Yasi: Yup. I love architecture and design.

Nikoo: Are you also interested in urban design? I mean like intersections, conjunc-
tions and crossroads.

Yasi: Totally. Urban design, architecture, and all that jazz.

Nikoo: Not me. I prefer to visit historic sites and amusement parks!

Yasi: Amusement parks? Come on! You’ve never even been to Eram Amusement
Park in Tehran!

Nikoo: Well, that one is no good and all its rides are pretty old!

Yasi: That’s true! I love amusement parks too. I love crazy rides like roller coasters!

Nikoo: But I’d rather take a ride in a Ferris Wheel.

Yasi: That one is dope, too. But are there any amusement parks in Toronto?

Nikoo: Dunno! Gotta check Google Maps.

Yasi: Okey dokey! For the final part of this lesson, let’s learn a few more interesting
words and expressions related to cities.

Music

Yasi: Nikoo, do you know what a pavement café is?

Nikoo: No! What is it?

Yasi: It is a cafe with tables outside on the pavement

Nikoo: Oh! Like the ones in Paris!

Yasi: Yup! And do you know what residential area means?

Nikoo: Is it an area where people live?

Yasi: Yup. It has a lot of houses and flats.

Nikoo: OK, now let me ask you a question. What is a zebra crossing?

Yasi: It is a place with black and white lines painted on the road and people are al-
lowed to go across the road at that place.

Nikoo: yeah, pedestrians are allowed to cross the street and vehicles must stop.
By the way, what is the opposite of pedestrian? I mean someone who is driving a
car…

Yasi: A motorist?

Nikoo: You nailed it!
