Yasi: Welcome to another amazing episode of This is English for Shopping!

Nikoo: Another spectacular episode!

Yasi: We are too proud, aren’t we? Ha ha

Nikoo: Dude, the course is really cool!

Yasi: I gotta admit, I love it to pieces myself! We’ve put our hearts and souls into it!

Nikoo: To put your heart and soul into something means to make a lot of effort to
do something.

[Music]

Nikoo: Yasi, is there anything else left to buy??

Yasi: Well let’s see, I bought a home, you bought a phone and some clothes. Mmm,
is there anything else we need?

Nikoo: Well, I don’t know about you, but I need lots of things, and most importantly,
I need a car.

Yasi: A car?

Nikoo: Yeah, cause we sold our car last year to be able to afford the home we
bought.

Yasi: But isn’t it a bit inconvenient to have a car in a big city, especially one with so
little parking space?

Nikoo: Quite the contrary, having a car is way more convenient, especially when
you’re married and want to go on little trips in the city or the countryside.

Yasi: Quite the contrary means just the opposite.

[Music]

Yasi: So Nikoo, you wanna look at some car models on that website?

Nikoo: I’ve already done that. I know what I want. I want a Sandero.

Yasi: Mmm, I like Sanderos! So you wanna buy a brand new one?

Nikoo: Of course not! Can’t afford it! I think I could afford a used car.

Yasi: What about leasing a car? Have you thought about that option?

Nikoo: Leasing a car? What is that?

Yasi: A car lease lets you drive a new car without paying a large amount of cash. To
lease a car, you simply make a small down payment and then make monthly pay-
ments to pay the rest of the price.

Nikoo: Aha! No! I’m done with loans and leases then. I’m already paying off my
mortgage every month.

Yasi: OK, a used car it is then!

Nikoo: Yup. I think there is an app for that, right?

Yasi: To check used cars? Sure! There is a ton of apps for that. Let’s check them out.

[Music]

Yasi: Nikoo liked a used car we looked online. She liked it and talked to the owner.
Now she’s on her way to take the car to a mechanic and have it checked.

[Music]

Street noise

A: Could you take a few minutes and see if there are any problems with this used
car that I am thinking of buying?

B: I am happy to help. Just pull up and we’ll give it a good look.

A: I don’t know much about cars.

B: We need to look inside and outside for signs of an accident or major damage.
Also, we need to look for wear on the tires.

A: If I go online I can also check to see if the car has been involved in a major ac-
cident.

B: Yes, you can check the history of the car online. Next, we need to turn on the
engine and take a look at the belts and hoses.

A: Will you take a drive with me to check handling?

B: A test drive would be good. But first let’s make sure that the turn signals, radio,
lights, and seats work properly.

A: On a test drive, what should I look for?

B: We are checking for solid braking and good overall handling.

A: I appreciate you helping me figure out what to look for.

B: My pleasure. This seems to be a solid car and a good choice for you.

[Music]

Nikoo: The car is in a good shape, Yasi. So what do you think?

Yasi: I think you should go for it. And the price is a real bargain.

Nikoo: Let’s not make a hasty decision, I also need to test drive it.

Yasi: That’s a great idea. So arrange a time with the car owner.

Phone ringing

Owner: Hello.

Nikoo: Hi. I am the one who took your car to the mechanic’s this morning.

Owner: Oh, hi. How are you?

Nikoo: I’m fine, thank you very much. I would like to take the car for a ride this eve-
ning. Would that be alright?

Owner: Of course. You can test drive it, just don’t forget

your Driver’s License and Proof of Insurance.

Nikoo: Here’s my Driver’s License and Proof of Insurance.

Owner: Well, just sign this card, and we’ll be on our way. Don’t forget to buckle your
seatbelt!

Nikoo: Can I take it on the freeway to check for acceleration?

Owner: That would be fine; just don’t exceed the speed limit!

Nikoo: Wow! This car handles great, and I love it!

Nikoo: I’ve made up my mind. I want that car, the price is great but I still think I can
get it for a lower price. I’m gonna try to negotiate with the owner.

[Music]

Nikoo: I really love this car!

Owner: Great! I was hoping that it would go to a driver who appreciates it.

Nikoo: How much are you willing to take for the car?

Owner: As I am sure you noticed, the price on the app is five thousand dollars.

Nikoo: Don’t you think you could come down a bit on the price?

Owner: You seem like a nice person. Maybe I could lower the price a bit.

Nikoo: Would you sell it to me for four thousand?

Owner: I am thinking more in the line of four thousand five hundred.

Nikoo: I’ll take it then!

Owner: Perfect! That works for both of us.

Nikoo: And how do I transfer the title to myself?

Owner: I think you have to contact the Automobile Club or go to the DMV website.

Nikoo: And what’s its process like?

Owner: Both buyer and seller need to transfer the ownership by filling out a Change
of Ownership form and signing over the Certificate of Title.

Yasi: We’ve bought so many things in this course, haven’t we??

Yasi: But isn’t it a bit inconvenient to have a car in a big city, especially one with so
