Episode 4

Yasi: Welcome to the fourth episode of This is English at the Hostel.

Nikoo: How do you like the course so far? Is it useful?

Yasi: We are doing our best to create practical and fun courses for you. So if you
like our work, make sure to let us know and make us happy.

Nikoo: You can email us and find us on Instagram. My Instagram ID is Niko0o0o

Yasi: And my Instagram ID is yasi.esl.

[Music]

Nikoo: First things first. Let’s start the lesson by reviewing the previous ones.

Yasi: Answer the questions after the beep. What is the meaning of porter?

Nikoo: Do you know any synonyms for that?

Yasi: What is the meaning of put somebody through something when you talk on
the phone?

Nikoo: And finally, what is the wake-up call service?

[Music]

Yasi: In the previous lesson, we got to check in at the hotel and go to our room.

Nikoo: We faced some problems, though. For example, the first room was noisy
and the second room was hot.

Yasi: But after all the trouble, we finally got to sleep and overcome our jet lag. Then
we woke up by hotel’s wake-up call service at 7:30.

Phone ringing sound effect

Nikoo: What is that?! Who’s calling?!

*somebody picks up the phone*

Automated voice message: “Good morning. Today’s weather forecast calls for
partly sunny skies, breezy, with a high temperature of 52 degrees. Thank you for
choosing the Movenpick hotel.”

3
Yasi: Damn, it was the wake-up service.

Nikoo: Oh it’s 7 , let’s sleep for another 30 minutes, they’re gonna call at 7:30 again.

Yasi: OK

Getting dressed

Nikoo: I’m starving, we’d better go get some breakfast before it’s finished!

Yasi: You go now and I’ll catch up with you. I need to answer these emails first.

Nikoo: OK.

Ordering breakfast at hotel’s restaurant

Waiter: Good morning ma’am. I’m glad to inform you that we have added more
items to the breakfast menu.

Guest: That’s great!

Waiter: May I take your order?

Guest: Yes, do you serve English style breakfast?

Waiter: Yes, ma’am, we do. Which juice would like to start with first; orange juice
or pineapple juice?

Guest: Pineapple, please. Fresh of course.

Waiter: Fresh pineapple juice, OK. How would you like your eggs ma’am?

Guest: Scrambled. I’ll have two scrambled eggs please.

Waiter: Do you like porridge or cereal?

Guest: Cereal .

Waiter: Do you like bread or toast?

Guest: Toast with honey and marmalade.

Waiter: Do you like tea, coffee, or milk?

Guest: None, but do you have hot chocolate?

Waiter: Of course we have ma’am. So your order is fresh pineapple juice, two
scrambled eggs, cereal, toast with honey and marmalade, and hot chocolate.

4
Guest: That’s right. How early can you serve?

Waiter: In 15 minutes, ma’am. Do you care for a local newspaper?

Guest: Oh, sure, thanks.

[Music]

Nikoo: As we said, sometimes the hotel offers continental buffet and therefore,
you go serve food yourself. You help yourself.

Yasi: And sometimes you order your breakfast from your room and ask them to
bring it for you. Of course, you gotta check with the hotel to see if they offer this
service or not.

Nikoo: Oh wow! Having breakfast in your room and on the bed is a very pleasant
way to start your day!

Yasi: I guess so. I’ve never tried that, have you?

Nikoo: Yeah, a couple of times in Turkey and I loved it.

[Music]

Yasi: Why do you look so depressed Nikoo?

Nikoo: I had so much fun on this trip, but now it’s time to leave!

Yasi: I know! It’s always sad to end a perfect trip.

Nikoo: Yeah, I think we should call the reception and ask them to call us a cab to
the airport.

Dialing sound effect

Reception: Hello, reception.

Guest: Hello, this is room 111.

Reception: Can I help you ma’am?

Guest: Yes, I need a taxi to the airport tomorrow morning.

Reception: No problem, I can arrange that for you right now. What time is your
flight?

Guest: I think it is around 9:30. So can the taxi come around eight o’clock?

5
Reception: Actually you’ll probably want the taxi to pick you up around 6:30.

Guest: 6:30? Are you sure?

Reception: Well, the airport is pretty far from here, as you know. And it’s been tak-
ing people a really long time to get through security recently.

Guest: I guess you’re right. Can you call me before the taxi comes tomorrow morn-
ing? I need an hour to wake up and get ready.

Reception: No problem, I’ll schedule a wakeup call for 5:30.

Hanging up the phone

Nikoo: It’s done! Now we have a couple of hours to pack our bags.

Yasi: OK, but what should we wear tomorrow? We don’t have any clean clothes
and some of them are wrinkled!

Nikoo: I think the hotel offers pressing service.

Yasi: What is that?

Nikoo: It is similar to ironing, but the technique is different. Basically, they make
clothes smooth and flat by pressing an iron on them.

Yasi: Aha! I think we totally need this service cause we don’t have time to prepare
our clothes before checking out at 6 a.m.!

Nikoo: Yeah, let me go down to the reception desk then.

Walking

Guest: Hello, I’d like to have some shirts pressed.

Reception: Yes, how soon will you need them?

Guest: Can I get them by 10 o’clock tonight?

Reception: Of course. Just leave them in your room, and I’ll send someone to get
them.

Guest: OK, thanks.

Guest: Most of our time here was pleasant, except for the smell of smoke. And the
city itself was fantastic.

Reception: I’m glad you enjoyed the city, anyway. But please don’t think too un-
kindly of us.

Guest: No not all. Thank you. And I need someone to help us with the bags.

Reception. No problem. I will have a bellhop take them to the taxi.

Guest: Thank you.

[Music]

Yasi: That’s it! That’s how to book a hotel, check in, stay at one and check out!

Nikoo: Hope you found the previous lessons useful and enjoyed them just as much
as we did.

Yasi: In the upcoming episodes, we will cover some useful vocabulary and expres-
sions.

Nikoo: And then we will move on to talk about other accommodations.

Yasi: That’s right! Cause these days, travelers have way more options and we

intend to tell you about the popular ones.

Nikoo: So as usual, we want you to practice everything up to now.

Yasi: And then when you’re ready, turn up the volume a bit and play the next epi-
sode.

Nikoo: So until the next episode…

Yasi: Take good care and bye.
