Episode 4

Yasi: We’re back!

Nikoo: And we’ve brought to you episode 4 of

Yasi: This is English for shopping!

[Music]

Yasi: First things first. Let’s review the previous lessons.

Nikoo: Answer the questions after the beep.

Yasi: What is an anti-inflammatory drug?

Nikoo: What is a club card?

[Music]

Yasi: In the previous lessons, I did some grocery shopping.

Nikoo: And I shopped for clothes and picked up a prescription.

Yasi: Yeah, and in this lesson we’re gonna buy something real big.

Nikoo: Something huge!

Yasi: Something massive!

Nikoo: We’re gonna buy Yasi a house!

Yasi: Yes! After saving money for years, now I can afford a little house in the city.

Nikoo: I’m super excited for you as well. I bought my home last year, and I think I
can help you buy yours.

Yasi: We should go house hunting together then! You’ve got a lot of experience
under your belt!

Nikoo: Yeah, I guess I do. So first we could go check out some open houses. What
do you say?

Yasi: What is an open house?

Nikoo: An open house is a house that owners want to sell. The house is open for
visitors. The people who want to buy it can visit it without making an appointment.
I don’t think we have such a thing in Iran, though.

3
Yasi: Cool, let’s go then.

[Music]

*Car driving sound effect*

Nikoo: I see an Open House sign over there, and I think we should go check it out.

Yasi: It looks like a very nice house. I love the beautiful lawn. What a great front
entry!

Walking on grass*

Nikoo: Check out the flyer with all of the home’s information on it.

Yasi: What is the price of this house in the flyer?

Nikoo: They have changed the asking price since it first went on the market. It is
now two hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars.

Yasi: Oh, it’s way over my budget. I don’t think I can afford it.

Nikoo: Yeah, but it’s such a lovely house…

Yasi: Let’s go check out other places. Maybe we find some place cheaper.

[Music]

Yasi: We didn’t find any good houses today, so we decided to go to a couple of real
estate agencies and talk to realtors.

Nikoo: A real estate agency is a business that arranges the selling, and renting of
homes, land, and buildings for their owners.

Yasi: And a realtor is a person who acts as an agent for the sale and purchase of
buildings and land; an estate agent.

[Music]

*Walking + opening the door*

Customer: I would like to discuss purchasing a home with you.

Realtor: I can help you. What location are you looking for?

Customer: I would like to live near the city lake.

Realtor: Have you thought about what your needs are in terms of size?

4
Customer: I would like a small cozy house with 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom.

Realtor: Is living in a particular school district important to you?

Customer: No, I don’t really care about schools at the moment.

Realtor: Are you interested in purchasing by the lake, or would you like a home with
a view?

Customer: I really want to live in a lakeside home.

Realtor: Now that I have an idea of what you want, I can begin my search.

[Music]

Nikoo: I really liked that realtor guy. I don’t normally trust real estate agents, though.

Yasi: I see what you mean. We gotta be careful.

Nikoo: So now, we need to call the realtor and arrange a time to go house visiting
together.

[Music]

Customer: Can we choose a time to look at houses together?

Realtor: Can you do that in the mornings, or would the afternoons be best?

Customer: Either way is good for me.

Realtor: There are a number of open houses this Thursday in that area. Would that
be okay with you?

Customer: I can take a little time off work and come.

Realtor: We could meet at the real estate office, or I could pick you up at your
home.

Customer: I am leaving from work, so maybe I could just meet you at the first
house that we will look at.

Realtor: I can think of five houses that we should look at. It will take most of the
day.

Customer: I would like to see as many as possible.

Realtor: When I have confirmed the times with the owners, I will e-mail you our
plans for the day.

[Music]

5
Nikoo: Yasi and the realtor are on their way to look at some houses. I wanted to go,
but I’ve got another appointment with the doctor. I’ll join them later.

[Music]

*Car driving and then walking*

Customer: I am not sure I even want to look at this house!

Realtor: It is a bit of a fixer-upper. Let’s take a look inside.

Customer: It’s no better inside.

Realtor: You know, with a little elbow grease and paint, you could spruce it up a bit.

Customer: There are hardly any windows in here, and that makes it really gloomy.

Realtor: Let’s go check out the kitchen. The printout says that it is quite large.

Customer: Look at those old plastic countertops and the peeling wallpaper.

Realtor: Maybe the master suite has some redeeming qualities. Follow me, please.

Customer: What’s that smell?

Realtor: Perhaps we should move on to the next listing.

[Music]

*Phone ringing* Picking up the phone

Nikoo: Hey, where are you?

Yasi: I just sent you the location on Whatsapp.

Nikoo: OK, I’m on my way. How did it go. Did you like anything?

Yasi: No! The ones we looked at were really bad!

Nikoo: Don’t worry, you’ll find a great house soon.

Hanging up the phone*

Car stops + Walking*

Yasi: I have a good feeling about this house.

Nikoo: Yes, I liked it the first moment I pulled up to it.

Yasi: I love the paint job!

6
Realtor: If you like the outside, you are going to really love the inside.

Yasi: What a beautiful home!

Realtor: You’ll notice that the window treatments, carpeting, and drapes are
all new.

Yasi: I like the way the blinds give you privacy from the street.

Realtor: Follow me into the kitchen. You will love it.

Yasi: I love the relaxing colors in the tile and floor covering!

Nikoo: Let’s take a few pictures so that we can remember what we like about
this house.

Yasi: How much is this house?

Realtor: It’s priced for 250,000 dollars.

[Music]

Yasi: Nikoo, I thought I could find cheaper houses too. I don’t think I can af-
ford anything.

Nikoo: Don’t worry pal! Not many people can afford their first home any-
ways.

Yasi: So what do they do?

Nikoo: They get a mortgage!

Yasi: What is that?

Nikoo: A mortgage is a loan taken out to buy property or land. You go to a

bank and if you get approved for a mortgage, they give you a large loan to
help you buy your home. And you pay back in the course of 10 to 30 years.

Yasi: Interesting. Did you get a mortgage too?

Nikoo: I think most people do, to be honest.

Yasi: Never thought about that. I think it’s the only option I have.

Nikoo: It’s a great option trust me.

[Music]

Yasi: In the next lesson, we’re gonna talk about mortgage and how to get
one.

Nikoo: So stay tuned for that and review as always.

Yasi: Bye for now.
