Yasi: Now we’re gonna continue with some more types of shops and useful ex-
pressions.

Nikoo: Greengrocer or grocery shop. It’s a shop where you can buy fruit and veg-
etables.

Yasi: It’s a shop that we all go to. So what do you say we listen to a conversation at
a greengrocer?

[Music]

A: I’m looking for some fresh produce that’s on sale.

B: Well, we just got in some mangoes.

A: Mangoes. What are they?

B: Well, it’s a fruit with a big nut in it.

A: Can you eat the nut?

B: No, you peel off the skin and throw out the nut.

A: How much are they?

B: Well, the sale price is $1 each.

A: What does a mango taste like?

B: They’re like a citrus fruit.

A: How do I know if it’s ripe?

B: You can buy them hard. Wait a few days for them to develop a soft feel.

A: Where do they come from?

B: Most of them in this store are from Mexico.

A: OK, I’ll have two mangos then. Thank you.

Yasi: Have you ever eaten a mango nikoo?

Nikoo: Sure, I have, but I don’t like them! I prefer oranges! They’re full of vitamin c.

Yasi: Mmm, and I prefer avocados. They’re also extremely nutrient, and you can
mix them with anything.

Nikoo: Nutrient means full of good things that are important for growth and good
health.

[Music]

Yasi: off license. It’s a shop that you can buy alcoholic drinks like beer and wine.
Not in Iran of course.

Nikoo: tobacconist ( tabacco shop). It’s a shop where you can buy pipes, ciga-
rettes, and tobacco. I don’t think we have this one in Iran, either. Shopkeepers usu-
ally ask for your ID to sell you tabacco or alcohol. You need to be over 18 to pur-
chase alcohol or tobacco

Yasi: I guess most people buy cigarettes from newsstands in Iran.

Nikoo: jeweler or jewelry shop is a shop where you can buy jewelry and watches.

Yasi: Like gold necklaces, silver rings, bracelets and …

Nikoo: Now let’s listen to a conversation at a jewelry shop.

[Music]

Jeweler: Hello! Do you need some help?

Customer: Yes, please. I would like to see this charm bracelet. Can you tell me how
much it is?

Jeweler: Yes, of course. There is discount on all the bracelets for only one week.
This one costs $45 now.

Customer: It’s beautiful. Can I try it on?

Jeweler: Sure. Look at the nice charms: a shoe, a dress and a hat!

Customer: I like it a lot. I’ll buy it. I also would like to buy a gift for my friend. Next
Monday is her birthday.

Jeweler: What would you like? We have necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings.

Customer: Mmm, that pendant over there looks gorgeous. How much is it?

Jeweler: That pendant is $25.

Customer: Great. And I need a silver chain to go with it. How much is a silver chain?

Jeweler: It’s $20.

Customer: I’ll have them both. Here’s $100.

Jeweler: Thank you very much. I’ll put them in a nice box for you. And here is your
change.

Nikoo: Who’s that lucky friend of yours?

Yasi: Ha ha! It’s you silly! I got them for your birthday!

Nikoo: Awww! Thank you! I can’t wait to wear the pendant!

Yasi: Stationery shop is a shop that sells stationery and related things. Stationery is
materials (such as paper, pens, and ink) for writing or typing.

Nikoo: And finally pet shop or pet store. It’s a shop that sells pet animals, such as
cats, dogs, and birds. A variety of animal supplies and pet accessories are also
sold in pet shops.

Yasi: Of course, it’s a better idea to adopt an animal not buy it!

Nikoo: I agree. Actually my friend’s cat has 3 kittens and she has put them up for
adoption. Take a look at this picture. Cute, aren’t they?

Yasi: Yeah they’re cute, but I think I’d rather get a dog. Dogs are more loyal than
cats.

Nikoo: Yes, but they’re so much work! Would you be willing to walk it every single
day? And clean up after it?

Yasi: Hmm. Good point. What about a bird? Or a fish?

Nikoo: We’d have to invest a lot of money in a cage or a fish tank. And I really don’t
know how to take care of a bird or a fish!

Yasi: Well, we’re obviously not ready to get a pet yet.

Nikoo: Yeah, I guess you’re right.
