Yasi: Welcome back.

Nikoo: I’m Nikoo Taheri.

Yasi: And I’m Yasaman Esmaeili.

Nikoo: You can find me on Instagram at Niko0o0o

Yasi: And me at Yasi.esl.

[Music]

Yasi: First things first, let’s review the previous lessons.

Nikoo: Answer the questions after the beep.

Yasi: What is the meaning of put a stake in the ground?

Nikoo: What’s the meaning of shopping instore?

[Music]

Yasi: So far, we talked about shopping for different things.

Nikoo: Grocery shopping, buying medication, a house…

Yasi: Getting a mortgage, buying furniture, a phone and a laptop and a car

Nikoo: These are basically the most important areas of shopping that you needed
to know about.

Yasi: In this lesson, we’re gonna cover some other common types of shops.

Nikoo: It’s a two-part lesson, actually. In this episode, we’ll cover the first part.

[Music]

Yasi: Antique shop: It’s a shop that sells valuable old items and collectables. The
items are usually expensive.

Nikoo:Bakery or Baker’s shop: You guessed it! It sells bread! It’s a shop where you
can buy bread. Remember that a bakery in Iran is very different from a bakery
abroad. There is a picture of a bakery in the US in your PDF, check it out.

3
Yasi: You can order bread by saying:

Can I have two loaves of bread please?

Can I have two baguettes please?

Beep

Yasi: Butcher’s: It’s a shop where you can buy meat.

Nikoo: Let’s listen to a conversation at the butcher’s, shall we?

[Music]

Butcher: Good morning. What can I get for you?

Customer: I’d like some lamb chops, pork chops, and some beef, but I’m not sure
which cuts I want yet.

Butcher: You’ve come to the right butcher shop. Everything here is fresh. Every-
thing comes straight from the slaughterhouse.

Customer: Um, I’m glad to hear that.

Butcher: In fact, we got in a shipment of game and poultry just this morning. You
can buy them bone-in, boneless, or whole. They’re as fresh as if you got them from
your own farm or brought them down with your own shotgun.

Customer: Uh, that’s great. I see that you sell marinated and stuffed meats, too.

Butcher: Yes, we do. We even make our own sausages. We use only the freshest
ingredients. They’re so fresh I wouldn’t be surprised if they got up and walked
across the floor.

Customer: Right. I think I’ll just take the chops for now.

Butcher: Are you sure? I can show you some of the best prime cuts of beef you’ll
ever see. They’re so fresh you could...

Customer: No, no, that’s all for now. I suddenly feel like a salad for dinner instead.

[Music]

Nikoo: I think that butcher destroyed meat for me for good.

Yasi: You should stop eating steak at some point . just like me. I’m trying to become
a vegetarian!

[Music]

4
Nikoo: Confectionery: It’s a shop where you can buy sweets and chocolate.

Yasi: Deli or delicatessen. It’s a shop where you can buy foods from around the
world. A deli is a shop that sells food for you to eat immediately. But, it also usually
sells many other things that you might purchase at a convenience store, such as
newspapers, gum, etc. This is particularly handy if you want to read the newspaper
while you eat.

Nikoo: Speaking of convenience store, it’s a store with extended opening hours
meaning it is open for more hours than most other stores and it is located in a con-
venient location. It stocks a limited range of items and groceries like snack foods,
confectionery, soft drinks, tobacco products, over-the-counter drugs, toiletries,
newspapers, and magazines.

Yasi: Over-the-counter means you can buy it without doctor’s prescription or a

license.

[Music]

Yasi: Florist or flower shop is a shop that sells flowers. Remember that florist also
means a person who sells flowers.

Nikoo: A flower shop is a beautiful place, let’s listen to a conversation there, shall
we?

[Music]

A: I need some flowers for my mom for the mother’s day.

B: We have some fresh red roses.

A: How much are the roses?

B: Twenty dollars per dozen.

A: That sounds like a good deal. How much are those daffodils?

B: 15 dollars per dozen. That is today’s sale price.

A: I’ll take a dozen of roses.

B: Is there anything else you’d like to get?

A: No, the roses will be fine.

B: I’m sure your mom will love them.

5
[Music]

Nikoo: Fishmonger. It’s a shop where you can buy fish.

Yasi: Mmm, I feel like some salmon!

Nikoo: I thought you wanted to become a vegetarian!

Yasi: Yeah, but I have a thing for raw salmon. Maybe I’ll become a pescatarian.

Nikoo: A pescatarian is someone who eats fish but no other meat.

[Music]

Yasi: And the last shop of the lesson: Newsstand or newsagent. It’s a shop that sells
newspapers and magazines.

[Music]

Newsagent: Can I help you?

Customer: The Daily Mirror and Seventeen, please.

Newsagent: I’m sorry. I’ve sold out The Daily Mirror. Everybody wants to know
about yesterday’s bank robbery, you know…

Customer: Yeah, rather shocking!

Newsagent: Happens every day! Here’s your magazine. One pound twenty please.

Customer: Here you go.

Newsagent: Oh, a tenner? I don’t have the change. Do you have anything smaller?

Customer: Yeah, a fiver.

Newsagent: Well, that’s no good either. I have no change. Wouldn’t you like some-
thing else? Reader’s Digest?

Customer: No, thanks. Just keep the change.

[Music]

Yasi: Alright! I think we’ve covered enough for today.

Nikoo: In the next lesson, we’ll cover more shops, but before you check out the
next lesson, review everything so far.

6
Yasi: And we’ll see you in the next lesson. Take care and bye.
