Episode 6

Yasi: Welcome to the sixth lesson of This is English for Shopping. I’m Yasaman.

Nikoo: And I’m Nikoo.

Yasi: In the previous lesson, I went house-hunting remember? I looked for a house
to buy.

Nikoo: And at last, she got approved to get a mortgage and then managed to buy
this adorable little house with a big green yard.

Yasi: It’s a cozy place, isn’t it?

Nikoo: Yeah, but it’s empty! You need to get some furniture!

Yasi: You’re right, but since I don’t have much money left, I’ll need to buy most of
the furniture second hand.

Nikoo: And you can buy some of them at IKEA. It’s a great place to find stylish and
affordable furniture. I got my living room set from them.

Yasi: How good of quality is their furniture?

Nikoo: It’s very sturdy. You get what you pay for. I assure you that you’re paying for
quality.

Yasi: Cool. But before we go, let’s review some vocabulary and tips related to fur-
niture, shall we?

[Music]

Yasi: First of all, remember that furniture is uncountable.

Nikoo: So you should use singular verbs for it. That furniture looks good.

Yasi: That house has lovely furniture.

Nikoo: The next thing you should know is that if you want to talk about one thing,
say a piece of furniture.

Yasi: One piece of furniture. Two pieces of furniture.

Nikoo: OK Yasi, I’ve made a list of some common pieces of furniture. I’m gonna
read them and you tell me which ones you want to buy. .

Yasi: OK. .

Nikoo: Sofa?

Yasi: Mmm, Yes, I’d like to recline on a sofa and relax. A bright green one probably.

Nikoo: OK, sofa check! Coffee table?

Yasi: No, I’m not a big fan of coffee tables, and I don’t need one anyway.

Nikoo: You have a weird taste! There is always a coffee table in front of a sofa.

Yasi: Well, that’s just me.

Nikoo: OK, cupboards for the kitchen?

Yasi: Mmm, I prefer some shelves and baskets instead.

Nikoo: Aha, how about a bookcase?

Yasi: Nah, I’ve given away almost all my books. I use my Kindle instead. It’s way
better!

Nikoo: You’re indeed a technophile, aren’t you? A dining table? I guess not…

Yasi: Yeah, why not? I think a wooden dining table would be great! I could use it to
work and eat.

Nikoo: It makes sense! I use my dining table all the time. And curtains? I don’t think
you want them, do you?

Yasi: No, I hate curtains! Ugh

Nikoo: What else? A bed of course.

Yasi: A double bed. Big one.

Nikoo: Checked. And a wardrobe. Right?

Yasi: Right.

Nikoo: I think that’s all.

Yasi: Add a rocking chair to the list too.

Nikoo: A rocking chair?!

Yasi: Yeah, imagine putting a rocking chair in front of the window and falling asleep
on it.

Nikoo: OK, I added that to the list too. Anything else?

Yasi: No, I’m all good for now. Let’s head to IKEA and purchase some of them then.

[Music]

*Crowded place, people talking, inside a shop*

Nikoo: Those couches are so cute!

Yasi: Yeah, I like them, but I’m looking for a low height one. Let me ask the sales
associate.

Yasi: Excuse me, I need to buy a low height couch, can you help me with it?

Sales associate: Sure, I’ll show you some of our 3-seater ones.

Yasi: Actually, I’d prefer an L-shaped six seater couch.

Sales associate: No problem, ma’am. Follow me.

*walking*

Yasi: These couches look quite comfortable.

Sales associate: Feel free to test them ma’am.

Yasi: Oh! I could fall asleep on this one right now. I love how squishy it is. Is it linen?

Sales associate: no,it’s chenille ma’am.

Yasi: Oh, chenille is my favorite fabric! So I like the feel of this couch, do you pro-
vide customizations?

Sales associate: Yes we do. You can select any design you like from our catalogue
and we will make it according to your requirement. Please take a look at this cat-
alogue.

*flipping through pages*

Yasi: I like this design here. But I want you to make it in chenille. And I like this forest
green color.

Sales associate: Sure, when can I send someone to measure the space in your
room?

Yasi: There is no need for that. I’ve already measured the space. Here you are.

Yasi: How much would it cost?

Sales associate: Just give me a minute, Let me do the calculations.

*keyboard sound*

Sales associate: $900. Would you like to pay now?

Yasi: Hmm let me think.

Sales associate : We also offer a 6 month interest free installment plan. So it would
be $150 a month.

Yasi: ah that’s a great offer.

[Music]

Nikoo: You just bought the most gorgeous couch ever!

Yasi: I know right? I wanna live in that couch!

Nikoo: Ha ha! But you’ve got more shopping to do.

Yasi: Yup, you’re right. I’ll buy a couple of them online and the rest second handed
at a flea market.

Yasi: First of all, remember that furniture is uncountable.

‫ی‬.‫اول از همه؛ یادت باشه که کلمه فرنیچر غیر قابل شمارشه‬

Nikoo: So you should use singular verbs for it. That furniture looks good.

‫ مثل این جمله‬.‫بنابراین باید از فعل های مفرد براش استفاده �کنی‬

Yasi: That house has lovely furniture.

‫و یا این جمله‬

Nikoo: The next thing you should know is that if you want to talk about one thing,

‫ ی‬.‫ استفاده �کنی‬piece ‫اگه میخوای در باره یه تکه اسباب اثاثیه حرف بزنی میتونی از‬

Yasi: One piece of furniture. Two pieces of furniture.

‫ی‬.‫یه تیکه از اسباب؛ دو تیکه‬

Yasi: No, I’m not a big fan of coffee tables, and I don’t need one anyway.

Yasi: Well, that’s just me.
