Checking of Attendance
Drill. Flashcards
Give the product of the following orally.
1.) 23 X 10
2.) 4 X 100
3.) 48 X 10
4.) 235 X 10
5.) 167 X 100
Review
Can you name all the place values in the number below.
Let us read the Math Comic Strip on the board. Make sure to follow the proper
intonation and even facial gestures to convey the meaning of the words being used
in the dialogue.
Guide Questions
1.) Who are the characters in the comic strip?
2.) What are their orders? How many pieces each?
3.) What is the total payment supposed to be paid by them?
4.) How much is the discount they earned?
5.) How was the discount computed?
2. ANALYSIS
Let us analyze the receipt presented in the comic strip, particularly, the
amount of 10 cheese burgers and the discount computed on the right.
Is there anyway you think we can solve these multiplication mentally?
Study the table below and discover the pattern in multiplying the
given decimals mentally.

For the 3rd and 4th column (Multiplying by 0.1 and 0.01)
How many decimal places in 0.1? What about in 0.01?
How many times does the decimal point move to the left when it is multiplied by 0.1? What
about when it is multiplied by 0.01?
How will you compare the number of decimal places in 0.1 and 0.01 with the number of times
the decimal point will be moved to the left?
3. ABSTRACTION
How do we multiply decimals by 0.1, 0.01, 10, or 100 mentally?
To multiply decimals by 10 or 100 mentally
1. Count the number of zeroes in 10 or 100
2. Move the decimal point to the right based on the number of zeroes. You must add
zero/zeroes at the end of the digit if the number of zeroes exceeded the number of digits in
the decimal.
Ex. 0.2 x 10 = 2 (only 1 zero for 10 therefore 1 movement for decimal point
to the right)
0.2 x 100 = 20 (2 zeroes for 100 therefore 2 movement for decimal point
to the right but since the no. of digit is only 1 and the no. of
zeroes exceeded by 1, you must add zero at the end to
make the answer 20.)
Ex. 0.2 x 0.1 = 0.02 (only 1 decimal place for 0.1, therefore 1 movement for
decimal point to the left)
0.2 x 0.01 = 0.002 (2 decimal places for 0.01 therefore 2 movement for
decimal point to the left but since the number of decimal places
exceeded the number of digits, add zero before putting decimal
point to the left.)
