Mệnh Đề IF Loại 0, 1, 2, 3, và hỗn hợp
I. Câu điều kiện loại 0
1. Định nghĩa:

Câu điều kiện loại 0 diễn tả một chân lí, một sự thật hiên nhiên hay mệnh lệnh, đề nghị.

If clause Main clause

If + S + Simple present S + Simple present
If + S + am/is/are S + am/is/are
V(s/es) V(s/es)

Ex: If anyone interrupts him, he gets angry.

Mệnh lệnh:
If + S + simple present, (Don't) + V

Ex: If there is a fire, don’t use this stair.

II. Câu điều kiện loại 1

If clause Main clause
If + S + Simple Present S + Simple future
If + S + am/is/are/V(s/es) S + will/can/must/may… + V_inf
Ex: If she has time, she will visit you.

III. Câu điều kiện loại 2

If clause Main clause
If + S + were/ weren’t(V2/ed) S + would/could/… + V_

Ex: - If I had time, I would go to the beach with you.

- If she didn’t speak so quickly, I could understand her.

IV. Câu điều kiện loại 3

If clause Main clause
If + S + had + V3/ed S + would/could/… + have + V3/ed

Ex: - If I hadn’t lost my way, I would have arrived sooner.

- If she had found the right buyer, she would have sold her house.

V. Câu điều kiện hỗn hợp

1. Câu điều kiện hỗn hợp "3 - 2"

Diễn tả một giả thiết trái với quá khứ nhưng kết quả trái với hiện tại.

If clause Main clause

If + S + Past perfect S + Would/could/ might… + V_inf

Ex: If she had reviewed her homework last night, she wouldn’t get bad points today.
2. Câu điều kiện hỗn hợp "2 - 3"

Diễn tả một giả thiết trái với hiện tại nhưng kết quả thì trái với quá khứ.

If clause Main clause

If + S + Simple past S + would/could + have + V3/ed

Ex: If I were as intelligent as Mary, I would have got the scholarship last year.

VI. Câu điều kiện ở dạng đảo ngữ

Đảo ngữ câu điều kiện loại 1
Should + S + (not) + V_inf
Ex: If that should happen, I’d be ready for it.
→ Should that happen, I’d be ready for it.

 Đảo ngữ câu điều kiện loại 2

Were + S +(not) + to_inf
Ex: If I offered you a job, I would need a strong recommendation from your former.
→ Were I to offer you a job, I would need a strong recommendation from your former.

Đảo ngữ câu điều kiện loại 3

Had +S + (not) + PP
Ex: If I had known that would happen, I would have given him the money.
→ Had I Known that would happen, I would have given him the money.

VII. Những trường hợp đặc biệt trong câu điều kiện
1. Unless = If….not (Nếu ………không, trừ phi)
Ex: If you don’t study harder, you will fail in the entrance examination.
→ Unless you study harder, you will fail in the entrance examination.
Ex: If I have time, I will help you.
→ Unless I have time, I won’t help you.

2. Các cụm từ thay thế mệnh đề IF

- Provided/ Providing (that), On condition (that), as long as, so long as: Miễn là, với điều
kiện là. - Suppose, supposing: Giả sử như
- In case: Trong trường hợp, phòng khi . - Even if/ though: Ngay cả khi, dù cho
Ex: If Mary comes, we’ll hold a meeting. (Cô ấy có thể đến hoặc không)
When Mary comes, we’ll hold a meeting. (Cô ấy chắc chắn đến)
Even if Mary comes, we’ll hold a meeting. (Cô ấy đến hay không thì vẫn tổ chức cuộc gặp mặt)
Provided/Providing (that)/ As long as Mary comes, we’ll hold a meeting. (Chúng tôi chỉ tổ
chức khi cô ấy đến)

3. Mệnh đề IF thay bằng BUT FOR/ WITHOUT/ THANKS TO + Noun phrase

But for/ Without/ Thanks to
If it hadn't been for + Noun/ V_ing/ The fact that
If it weren't for

But for/ without: nếu không vì , Thanks to: nhờ vào

- If the weather hadn’t been so bad, we would have enjoyed the journey.
= But for the bad weather, we would have enjoyed the journey.
= If it hadn’t been for the bad weather, we would have enjoyed the journey.
= Had it not been for the bad weather, we would have enjoyed the journey. (Đảo ngữ)
4. Otherwise/ Or/ Or else

- If my mother didn’t pay my fees, I wouldn’t be here.

= My mother pays my fees; otherwise I wouldn’t be here.

- I did exercise yesterday; otherwise I wouldn’t have passed the exam.

= If I hadn’t done exercise yesterday, I wouldn’t have passed the exam.
