1.3. WORKING SPACE

1.4 TECHNOLOGICAL CAPABILITIES

The circular grinder could be used to grind cylindrical surfaces as well as cone shaped
surfaces of small peak angle.
Cone shaped surfaces are ground by turning of the upper table to a given angle
reported at the respective scale.

page 12
UNIVERSAL CYLINDRICAL GRINDING MACHINE SHU 321
The universal cylindrical grinding machine SHU 321 M could be used to grind the
following technological groups of item (Fig. 1.4.).
Grinding of a flat flange of small thickness.
The front saddle is rotated to 90° according to the scale ( 1 ). The item to be ground is
fixed in a chuck.
In order to obtain the required flatness of the surface, it is necessary to do as follows :
- preliminary grinding after rough adjustment according to the scale
- reading out using an indicator fixed in both ends of the flange - the front saddle is
rotated until the reading of the indicator is the same at both ends.
If frequent readjustment for flat flanges grinding is necessary, the use of standard
flange is recommended to adjust the front saddle according to the indicator.
Grinding of cone-shaped surfaces of large peak angle is also possible by rotating the
front saddle only (Fig. II).
The conical shape of the surface to be ground depends on the rotation angle of the
front saddle. If cone-shaped surfaces of large peak angle ground in centers (Fig. III), the
rotating plate should be placed parallel to the forming of the ground item; the grinding
support should be rotated 90° in respect to the rotating plate.
Feeding of the circle along the forming is possible only by the transverse feeding
device.
Grinding of cone-shaped surfaces of an angle about 90° in a chuck is possible by
rotating the front saddle 90° ; rotating plate - half of the angle of the ground cone and
grinding support - 90° in respect to the rotating plate (Fig. II).
Lap feeding along the cone forming should be done by the transverse feeding device.
If it is necessary to grind high flange surface, the front saddle should be turned to about
45°; the rotating plate also 45° ; grinding support - to 90° in respect to the plate.
In order to achieve uniform flatness of the flange, it is necessary to use methods
principally similar to those given in the description concerning low flange grinding (flanges of
small high).
Lap feeding along the surface to be ground is done by the transverse feeding device.

NOTICE:
In case the grinder turns on the grinding support during adjustment, lap sharpening
should be done after rotation of the support.

2. INSTALLMENT OF
THE MACHINE

page 19
UNIVERSAL CYLINDRICAL GRINDING MACHINE SHU 321
2.1 TRANSPORTATION

The unpacking of the grinder is followed by:

1. Inspection of the grinder for damages due to wrong packing, transportation or
unpacking.
2. Check up according to the packing list for availability of all accessories.
Steel ropes of diameter not less than 20 mm should be used for lifting up the
unpacked grinder.
Three support screws are fixed on the grinder body to lift it by crane (fig. 2.1).
Before lifting of the grinder, wooden pads should be placed for the ropes not to
contact the surfaces, so that to avoid damage of the finished and painted surfaces of the
grinder. It is preferable to wrap the wooden pads in felt or wooden piece of cloth. The
wooden pads should not contact extruded parts or mobile parts of the grinder as some
components could be damaged or the precision of its operation could be affected.
All mobile parts should be tightened to the grinder before transportation.
During transportation the grinder should be in horizontal position.
When transported by crane the grinder should be lowered slowly and attentively on
the foundations as rough handling could cause damages in the units and affect the grinder
adjustment.

2.2 UNPACKING

Before settling of the grinder on the determined working place, it should be carefully
cleaned from the protective coating of grease.
At first cleaning is done mechanically - by wooden spade; then the lubricated surfaces
are washed using pure naphtha or special cleaning oil. Metal brushes must not be used.
Washing of the grinder using petrol is not allowed as petrol vapours could penetrate in the
electrical wiring and cause fire. The cleaned surfaces are dried using cotton cloth as well as
working surfaces of the grinder.

2.3 ESTABLISHMENT

The place selected for the grinder should not be in immediate proximity to machine
with hammering action (presses, drilling machines, milling machines, etc.).
It is important to settle the grinder un well leveled foundation for its precise
operation. The foundations layout is shown in fig. 1.5.
The thickness of the concrete layer is chosen depending on the soil strength, however,
it should not be less than 400.
The grinder is horizontally settled by placing a level on the working surface of the
lower bench, the last being is middle position.

GRINDER LEVELING SHOULD BE DONE AS FOLLOWS:

1. The grinder is lifted by crane and three wedges are placed under its body (fig. 1.5.).
2. The grinder is lowered slowly on its place and the wedges are uniformly impaled to
achieve the required exactness of leveling.
3. The other three wedges are set in the sports indicated (2); then they are impaled
between the foundations and the grinder.
A check of leveling the machine.

page 21

4. Liquid cement solution is poured under the grinder body; in ratio of cement to sand
= 1:3.
Check up of the levelling is done again and corrections are made, if necessary, using
the levelling screws.

2.4 ELECTRICAL SUPPLY

The grinder is connected to the power line by the input terminals mounted on electric
board. It is necessary to proceed as follows:
- check up the label on the electric cabinet - the indicated frequency and voltage
should correspond to the local power line.
- select the required cable of cross-section corresponding to the current in the main
fenders (given on the same label).

- open the electric cabinet, take off the protective plates on the terminals, take out
the protective plate from the nipple mounted on the left - on the bottom of the electric
cabinet.
- pass the supply cable through the nipple and tighten the cable.
- the ends of the supply cable should be connected to terminals L1, L2 and L3, the
neutral conductor - to the neutralizing bar.
- again set on the protective plate.

2.5 STARTING OF THE MACHINE

Before starting the grinder or after interruption of operation for long periods, it is
necessary to make a capital check up and cleaning of all units, following the lubrication
instructions given in chapter "lubrication".
Place all belts in the proper position and check their tightening according to the
instructions for "adjustment".
All panel of the grinder must be fixed.
All electric motors should be switched on and checked for proper operation.
The manual drive of all mechanisms of the grinder must be checked. The bench-
reversing supports are placed, they secure maximum run and speed of the bench. The
operation of all mechanism should be checked as well as the idle movement of the grinder.
The pump unit should be filled with 110 liters of oil MX - M32 as per Bulgarian national
standard 7803-82; water viscosity 28.8 to 35.2 CST at 40° C.
The cooling unit tank is filled with cooling liquid containing as follows:
threesodium phosphate 0.3%
sodium nitrite 0.6%
soda ash 0.1%
glycerin 0.3%
water 98.7%
The mixture is prepared at ambient temperature; the separate components are added
to the total amount of water; the mixture is stirred for about 10 minutes.

3. SERVICE

page 23
UNIVERSAL CYLINDRICAL GRINDING MACHINE SHU 321
3.1 LUBRICATION

The grinder long life and efficient operation depend on the proper and regular
lubrication.

3.1.1 Lubrication of the grinding support spindle bearings.

The bearings of the grinding support spindle operate in oil bath AH 15 as per Bulgarian
national standard 7803-76.
The oil tank capacity is 18 dm3.
Continuous circulation of the oil in the bearings chamber is maintained by a pump,
having capacity of 1 dm3/min.
The oil in the grinding support tank is changed once per year after several times
washing of the bearings chambers, using naphtha. The filter is removed from the system for
lubrication of the grinding support bearings and should be carefully washed in naphtha.
During the grinder exploitation, the oil level could run low /drop/ due to some reasons
or leaks occur from the chambers of the spindle bearings. In such a case the grinder
automatically stops and should be repaired.

3.1.2 Lubrication of the grinding support guides

The roller guides of the grinding support are greased once per year and during repairs
of the grinder.
During repair of the grinder the guides should be washed in naphtha before greasing.

3.1.3 Lubrication of the bench guides

The lubrication of the guideways is performed continuously, as the oil is taken from
the hydraulic system drive, before the non-return valve towards the chokes D1, D2 and P6 .

3.1.4 Electric motors lubrication

The bearings of each electric motor should be greased every six months.
All other spots for lubrication are indicated in the enclosed drawings concerning
lubrication /fig.3.1/.

3.2 LAP CHANGING

Before fixing the lap on the spindle, the lap flange should e mounted as follows
(fig.3.2).
Set flange (1), sealing (2), than lap (3), taking into consideration the flange centering
diameter.
Lap is pressed by the tightening flange (4) and sealing. Drive the screws (5) so that to
press the lap a little; then cross drive the screws by turn to tighten them. Thus uniform and
good lap tightening is secured, not permitting lap turning over during operation.
Fixed joint is not recommended as cracks in the lap could occur, bringing to dangerous
operation of the grinder.

fig 3.2.

page 26
UNIVERSAL CYLINDRICAL GRINDING MACHINE SHU 321
3.3 LAP BALANCING

The lap should be balanced before fixing it on the grinder in the following way:
- the lap mounted on the flange is fixed on special mandrel /delivered with the
accessories of the machine) and balanced on special stand.
- the balancing is made by changing the position of the three balancing stones
(fig.4.2). When balance is achieved, the stones are tightly fixed - otherwise the lap will be
disbalanced during operation, bringing to danger of damage.
Disbalancing could cause wearing out of the lap due to the heterogeneous materials of
which it is made. In such cases vibrations occur, heating of the bearings, etc. if such
phenomena are observed, disassemble lap and balance it again.
The flange and the lap are tightened to the spindle.

3.4 LAP DRESSING

Proper and regular lap dressing is necessary to ensure good cutting capabilities and
proper geometrical shape of the lap.
Good lap cooling is done as necessary during the process of dressing to avoid heating
and sudden cooling of the diamond, which could cause its breaking.
Lap dressing in dry conditions is absolutely forbidden.
The feeding of the lap to the diamond should not exceed 0.05 mm at one move.
The high speed of diamond movement along the lap could cause rapid wearing out of
the diamond and infringement of the precision and smoothness during grinding.

3.5 COOLING

The cooling liquid composition during grinder operation should not be changed and only
especially prepared mixture /see chapter 2/ should be added to the tank.
Add 10% of the total volume to the cooling liquid every day and change all the cooling
liquid in the tank every fifteen days with cleaning of the tank in between. Cleaning is made
using a special spade; then wash with water and dry with cloth damped in naphtha.
When corrosion is noticed, all the cooling liquid should be changed immediately.
Adding of pure water is absolutely forbidden.
At the end of the working shift the grinder should be carefully cleaned from the
cooling liquid.

THE MACHINE

page 32
UNIVERSAL CYLINDRICAL GRINDING MACHINE SHU 321
5.1 GRINDING SUPPORT

5.1.1 Adjustment of the spindle bearings

The adjustment of the spindle bearings is made by the manufacturer in the plant and
during normal working regime their adjustment can stay for a long period of time.
In case that the grinding quality is not so good and the reason is the wrong adjustment
of the bearings they should be adjusted.
The adjustment should be done in the following way:
1. Take off the casing of the lap
2. Take off the lap together with the flanges
3. Take off the casing of the belt transmission
4. Leave only one belt from the belt transmission and release it so that the spindle
should lightly be rotated
5. Shells 1 and 2 are not adjustable, only shell 3 can be adjusted with the aid of screw
4.
6. Unscrew cap 6
7. Unscrew nut 5
8. The adjustment is made by screw 4. Use special wrench for turning the spindle
which when the bearing is adjusted should turn with approximate force 1 to 1,5 daN applied
at the end of the wrench.
9. Tighten nut 5 and screw cap 6
10. Several hours' unscrewing of the spindle is done (without the lap)
11. Check the heating condition of the spindle.

The bearing adjustment should be made when there is heat balance of the grinder
(the grinder should be working for several hours, when the temperature in the bearings
comes to certain value and then stop its increasing).
The adjustment should be made quickly to avoid considerable temperature difference
in the bearings of the grinding spindle, which can cause not exact adjustment.

page 33
UNIVERSAL CYLINDRICAL GRINDING MACHINE SHU 321
fig. 5.1.

5.1.2. Adjustment of the capacity relay

The capacity relay is fixed in the upper part of the grinding support and its aim is to
switch the motor of the grinding spindle after the bearings chambers are filled with oil.
After pressing the switching on the grinding spindle button 20-30 seconds should pass
and the lap turns.
If the switching is in a shorter period of time, the following adjustment should be
done:
- unscrew the plug position on the cover of the relay and drive in the screw located
under the plug clockwise.
- when the switching on is slower than the determined time than the screw should be
turned counter clockwise.

page 34
UNIVERSAL CYLINDRICAL GRINDING MACHINE SHU 321
After the adjustment you should screw the plug again.

5.1.3. Adjustment the tightening of the belt transmission

To avoid preliminary wearing out of the bearing and the belts, as well as to avoid
vibrations, the belts should not be very tight. Normal tightening is considered when the full
load is transmitted without slipping of the belts.
Tightening of the belts for rotation of the lap is done by displacement of the motor (3)
fixed on the plate (2) by screw (1), using the adjusting (fig.8.2).

Ф1-П-Ф2-1 - Р2-3-К3-4-Р3-6-Ц1 Ц1-5-Р3-Р4-7-Р5-Д1-8 —tank

The oil for control passes:

/after switching P4 to the right of the bench support/

4-Р4-9-К4-Д6-Р3 Р3-К8-Д3-10-Р4 —tank

The following cycle is repeated in the same sequence.

Throttles Д3 , Д5 are intended to regulate easy movement of the reverse. Throttles Д4
and Д6 are destined to retain the bench in left and right position. The bench velocity is
regulated by throttle Д1 .

Distributor P5 is set in right position during lap dressing. The oil, pushed out of cylinder
Ц1, passes through throttle Д2, which is used to regulate the bench velocity during lap
dressing.

5.3.2. Rapid bench movement

/P6 is switched over to the right/

The oil pushed out of cylinder Ц1 through the distributor button P6 passes back to the
tank. Rapid bench movement is possible only when the grinding support is in backward
position.
When the grinding support is in front position, the oil passes / Ф1– П– Ф2– 1 – Р7 – 11 /,
to the right side of P6 and does not permit its changing over to the right.

5.3.3.Periodic automatic transverse feeding using a ratchet device

Distributor P8 for periodic feeding, has four position:

1. Feeding at each stroke
2. Feeding at left reverse of the bench
3. Feeding at right reverse of the bench
4. Feeding stopped
When the distributor P8 is set in one of the first three positions and when distributor
P8 is changed over, the bench rests /supports/ secure oil passing as follows:
4 – Р4 – 10 – Р8 –Р9 – Ц2 the ratchet is turned and then feeding of the grin ding
support is carried out.

Meanwhile, the oil passes through damper Д7 to the left section of distributor P3,
changing it slowly over to the right. Actuated by spring 13, piston 14, the carrying dog /cam/
is moved to the right, the oil from cylinder Ц2 returns to the tank as follows:
Ц2 – 12 – Р9 – Р8 – 9 – Р4 - tank

page 37
UNIVERSAL CYLINDRICAL GRINDING MACHINE SHU 321
5.3.4. Rapid grinding support feeding and taking off

Rapid grinding support feeding and taking off is achieved by changing over the
electromagnetic distributor P7 to the left or right end position, correspondingly.

5.3.5. Taking off the back saddle tail spindle

Hydraulic taking off the back addle tail spindle could be done only with grinding support
taken off to backward position. The tail spindle is taken off by pressing a foot pedal of
switching P14 to the left.

5.3.6. Blocking of the device intended for manual bench movement

When the bench is hydraulically moved, oil from the pump passes to Ц4 and piston 26
moves downwards, disengages the manual movement flywheel from the cam, fixed to the
bench.

5.3.7. Tightening of the back-lash in nut screw clutching of the transverse movement
device

Tightening of the back-lash in screw 27 and nut 28 engagement is achieved by means

of cylinder Ц5 . During the grinder operation, the piston rod of Ц5 permanently presses a bar,
fixed to the grinding support body.
The direction of the effort, exerted on the bar, is opposite to the grinding support
feeding.

5.4.ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

5.4.1.. General information

The grinder electric driving is secured by asynchronous electric motors with short-
connected rotors moving the grinding wheel, the hydraulic unit, the cooling and lubricating
systems.
The item is rotated by electric motor D.C., of independent excitation, whose
revolutions are adjusted by the servo control for DC motors of firm SEMIS.
The electric installation is fit for 380 volts.
The electrical installation is adapted to voltage power line of 380 V. By transformer
control circuit is powered by a voltage of 24 V. The machine is equipped with a lamp local
lighting with reduced voltage of 24 V. The regulator of motor rotation for the product is
installed in the electrical cabinet. Control panel is mounted in front.

5.4.2. Operation of the electric installation

For leading the machine into operation it is necessary to turn on the main switch QF0.

page 38
UNIVERSAL CYLINDRICAL GRINDING MACHINE SHU 321
Press button SB3 – switch on of the hydraulic and lubrication motors.
After the actuation of relay for level SP3 turns on lamp HL2 of button SB2, which turns
on the motor of the grinding wheel. The motors for the work piece and the cooling system
can be turned on manually or automatically.
The work piece is switched on:
- Manually with button SB6
- Automatically with button SB9
- Impulse with button SB7
Cooling is switched on:
- Manually with button SB4
- Automatically with button SB9
- With button SB 8 is switched off automatically
Button SB8 is used for the manual or automatic operation mode. When button SB8 is
in left position the machine works in manual mode, and when it is in right position it is in
automatic mode.
The lead in of the grinding support is executed by pressing button SB9 – upon which
the relay KY3 and the distributor YA1. The lead out is done backwards on the grinding
support by pressing button SB8 upon which the relay KY3 is switched off and the distributor
YA2 is turned on.
When it is necessary to use the internal grinding device, the spindle should be in
working position. Switch over SQ2. With button SB2 is turned on the motor for the internal
grinding and with button SB1 is turned off. At the same time the work of the motor for
lubrication is stopped and with it the motor for the main grinding wheel.

5.4.3. Protection and blocking

1. Zero protection - electric motors can not be started by themselves, again after
voltage drop to zero or up to very low unpermissible value with following recovery.
2. Short circuit protection of the electric installation is secured by fuses FA1; FA2; FA3.
3. Overloading protection of the motors is secured by thermal relay QF1;QF2;QF3; QF4;
QF5.
4. Capacity relay for SP3 oil is used to guarantee normal lubrication of the spindle for
the main lap. If there is not such a kind of oil or if lubrication is deficient, it is impossible to
actuate the lap.
5. When the motor for internal grinding is started the grinding support cannot be
withdraw.

5.4.4. Instructions for servicing the electrical installation

1. The grinder should be properly grounded. The grounding and regulations for labour
safety in each country.
2. Checking and repair of the conducting installation should be done after the grinder
is switched off and disconnected from the power supply, using switch QFO; no voltage in it.

page 39
UNIVERSAL CYLINDRICAL GRINDING MACHINE SHU 321
3. Periodically clean the electric motors from any traces of oil, dust ets. Under normal
operating conditions the lubricant should be changed every 2000 hours. The oil should be
filled up to 2/3 of the bearing spare space.
4. If Any of the thermal protections is actuated, find the reason for that. If it is due to
electric motor overload, change the operating mode, if the cause is mechanical - tightening
of bearing or transmission - repair it and start motor again. Shunting of the thermal relay
operative contact is absolutely forbidden.
5. When a fuse is blown out check for the reason and repair. The change of plug
should be done only with original one, of the same value of the rated current.
6. When there is scale on the contact surfaces, it should be cleaned by tungsten - point
file.
7. Before starting a new grinder or after repair, it is necessary to measure the
resistance of the electric motors windings in respect to each other and respect to the casing.
When the temperature is 60 to 70C the insulation resistance should be higher than 0.3 MΩ.
Make the measurements using meger 500 V.
8. After you connect the grinder to the power line, check on idle run.

plate 7.
Indicator 5, graduated by 1µm , having
a dead zone of 0,4µm , is used to
measure the diameters of the three
cross-sections A, B and C, and both
planes a-a, b-b, for each of them.
The deviation from the diameter size
for each longitudinal cross-section (a-a
and b-b) is determined as difference
between the largest and the smallest
value measured in the respective
section. The largest value of all
differences is related to sample 1.

Sample I and II round shape 1. Sample 1 is fixed between the grinder 2,5µm
centers and its external cylindrical
surface is processed.
2. Sample II is fixed in the grinder
cartridge and its external surface is
processed.
After processing in three cross-sections
A, B and C, the diameter value is
measured in four longitudinal sections a,
b, c and d. The deviation in each of
sections A, B, and C is determined by the
largest deviation from the rated
dimension considering dimensions from
the four longitudinal sections. The
largest deviation, on the basis of the
twelve measurements, is considered as
deviation for the item.

AGGREGATE FOR CLEANING COOLANT

The unit for cleaning of cooling liquid is the designed for cleaning of cooling liquid and
supplying the cooling liquid in area of cutting.
The dirty cooling liquid from machine's chute get into upper settling tank , and then
get into down settling tank, where is settled once more. Through the pump the liquid is
pumped out to the container for magnetic separation, then to the grinding area.
The container for magnetic separation is composed from cylindrical body with welding
bottom and cooler. The unsettled metal particles is stacked on the pipe wall, in which is the
arranged magnetic sleeve. By the cover is opened through unscrewing the bolts.
The liquid from the pump go in down side through nipple 108 and go out from upper
side through nipple.
Frequency of cleaning is function of operating conditions of the machine. It is
necessary the upper settling tank must clean every day and the down settling tank and the
container for magnetic separation every week.
