Lesson/Topic: Polygons, Triangles and Quadrilateral

Competency: The learner identifies the types of polygons according to its sides
Introduction:
A polygon is a closed figure where the sides are all line segments. Each side must intersect
exactly two others sides but only at their endpoints. The sides must be non - collinear and have a
common endpoint. A polygon is usually named after how many sides it has, a polygon with n-sides is
called a n-gon.
Lesson Objective/s:
(1) define polygon
(2) identify the kinds of polygons and its angle
(3) value the importance of polygons in daily life
(4) create a toy with three-dimensional figure of polygons

Key Concept

- Polygon is a closed figure on plane bounded by three or more noncollinear consecutive line segments.

3 Triangle

4 Quadrilateral

Polygons can also be classified as convex or concave. A convex polygon has no

diagonal can be drawn outside the polygon. Therefore, a concave polygon has a diagonal that can be drawn
outside the polygon.
 Regular Polygons
Another way to clssify polygons is according to the measure of sides and angles. A
polygon is said to be equilateral if all the sides have same length. It is equiangular if all the angles have equal
measure. A polygon that is both equilateral and equiangular is called a regular polygon.
 Interior and Exterior Angles of Convex Polygons
A polygon divides the points of the plane into three parts. The three parts are
the (1) exterior of the polygon, which are the points outside the polygon, (2) the points on the polygon
itself, and (3) the interior of the polygon, which are the points inside the polygon.
The angles in the interior of the polygon are called interior angles. An interior
angle is formed by two consecutive sides of the polygons.

- A triangle is a polygon with exactly three sides. The basic parts of a triangle are the vertices,
angles, and sides.
- There are some other terms that are related to a triangle such as the altitude, angle bisector, and
median. These are considered as the secondary parts of a triangle.
- Altitude is a segment drawn from one vertex of a triangle perpendicular to the opposite side. It
is also known as the height of the triangle.
- Angle bisector divides an angle of a triangle into two congruent angles.
- Median is a segment drawn from one vertex of a triangle to the midpoint of the opposite side.
- Triangle which has all sides equal, is known as an equilateral triangle.
- Triangle that has two sides of equal measure is called an isosceles triangle.
- The angle formed by the two legs is called the vertex angle.
- Triangle that has no equal sides is called scalene triangle.
- A quadrilateral can be classified accordig to the number of its parallel sides.
- A general quadrilateral is a polygon with no two sides parallel. It is also called a trapezium.
- A quadrilateral with exactly one pair of opposite sides parallel is called a trapezoid.
- A parallelogram is a quadlirateral with two pairs of opposite sides that are parallel.

Performance Task:
The toy company that you are working will be having a 3 day launch of new product to
showcase new designs in the market. As one of the production team, you are going to create a toy with
three-dimensional figure of polygons and paste it on 1/8 illustration board upon presentation. The said
design will be evaluated by the manager based on its 3D creation, faces, and paper created figure.
