TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENTS’ ACTIVITY
A. Preliminary Activities

1. Prayer
May I request everyone to please In the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the
stand for the prayer? Holy Spirit, Amen…

Please be seated.

2. Greetings
Good morning class! Good Morning Sir!
How are you this morning? We are very much fine, Sir!

3. Checking of attendance
Are there any absent today? None Sir.
Very good!
Are you excited for our new lesson for
today? Yes we are, Sir!
Wow, good to hear that.

4. Setting of Rules
Before we finally move on to our
lesson, let us first have an agreement. Is
that fine with you all? Yes, sir!

I want you to keep all things that are

not needed to our discussion. Sit properly
and do not talk with your seatmates.

What will you do if you want to

answer to my questions?
We’ll just raise our hands silently,
sir.
Very good!

And what will you do if

somebody is talking here in front? We should listen attentively, sir.
Bravo!

What about if we have group activities? We have to cooperate and participate, sir.

So, do we have an agreement now? Yes, sir!

B. Review
Before we proceed to our new lesson
for today, let us have a short recap about
our lesson last week.

Do you still remember what was our

lesson last week? About Quadratic Inequalities Sir.

Very Good!

What is a Quadratic Inequality? A quadratic Inequality is a type of equation

which does not have an equal sign and includes
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENTS’ ACTIVITY
the highest degree two.

Very good!

What are the steps in solving

Quadratic Inequality?
Write the inequality in standard form, solves the
related quadratic equation, locate the boundary
points on a number line, construct a sign chart
and the solution set is the interval that produced
a true statement.

Very Good!

Who can give me an example of a

quadratic Inequality? x² + 6x +8>0

Ok, very good!

Do you still have any questions about

our previous topic? No sir.

Alright!

C. Motivation
Okay class, I have here set of equation. I
will divide you into two groups, yet you
must answer it individually. What you are
going to do is to guess which equations are
in vertex form. You will be given 5
minutes to do the activity.

 y=x²-8x+4
 (2x²-x) + 14  y=(x-3)²+5
 x²+25x+8=0  y=2(x-1)²-4
 y=(x-3)²+5  y=2(x-1)²-4
 y=2(x-1)²-4  y=(x-4)²-12
 x² + 6x +8>0
 y=2(x-1)²-4
 y=(x-4)²-12
 x²+8x+4=0
 4x²-4x+2=0

So now, what do you think is our

lesson for today? (Students’ answers vary.)

D. Presentation
This morning we are going to discuss
about Quadratic Function, in which you
are expected to: transform quadratic
function in General Form to Vertex
Form by completing the square.
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENTS’ ACTIVITY
E. Discussion
Quadratic Function
-A quadratic function is a function that
can be described by an equation of the
form f(x)=ax²+bx+c, where a≠0.
In a quadratic function, the greatest
power of the variable is 2.

Steps in Transforming Quadratic

Function in General Form to Vertex Form:

Example #1: y=x²-6x+14

1. Group the terms containing x.

2. Factor out a. y=(x²-6x)+14
3. Complete the expression in parenthesis adding(b/2)² subtracting a(b/2)²
to make it a perfect square trinomial by
adding (b/2)² and subtracting a(b/2)² to (x²-6x+9) + 14- - 9
the constant term.
4. Express the perfect square trinomial as
the square of a binomial. y=(x-3)² + 5

Example #2: y=2x²+6x-5

1. Group the terms containing x.

2. Factor out a. Y=(-2x² + 6x) - 5
3. Complete the expression in parenthesis y=-2(x²-3x) - 5
to make it a perfect square trinomial by y=-2(x²-3x+9/4) – 5 – (-9/2)
adding (b/2)² and subtracting a(b/2)² to
the constant term.
4. Express the perfect square trinomial as y=-2(x – 3/2)² - 1/2
the square of a binomial.

F. Developing Mastery
Now, let’s have a board work. I will
call 5 random persons to answer on the
board.

1. y=2x²-4x+8
2. y=2x²-8x+4
3. y=x²-4x-2
4. y=x²-4x+8 1. y=2x²-4+8
5. y=4x²+8x-9 y=(2x²-4x)+8
y=2(x²-2x)+8
y=2(x²-2x+1)+8-(-2)
y=2(x-1) ²+10
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENTS’ ACTIVITY

2. y=2x²-8x+4
y=(2x²-8x)+4
y=2(x²-4x)+4
y=2(x²-4x+4)+4-8
y=2(x-2) ²-4

3. y=x²-4x-2
y=(x²-4x+4)-2-(-4)
y=(x-2) ²+2

4. y=x²-4x+8
y=(x²-4x+4)+8-4
y=(x-2) ²+4

5. y=4x²+8x-9
y=(4x²+8x)-9
y=4(x²+2x)-9
y=4(x²+2x+1)-9-4
y=4(x+1) ²-13
G. Generalization

A while ago, we discussed the steps on

how to transform a Quadratic Function from
the General Form to Vertex Form by
completing the square.

What are the steps on how to transform

quadratic function in general form to vertex
form by completing the square?

1. Group the terms containing x.

2. Factor out a.
3. Complete the expression in parenthesis to
make it a perfect square trinomial by adding
(b/2)² and subtracting a(b/2)² to the constant
term.
4. Express the perfect square trinomial as the
square of a binomial.

Very Good!

Give me an example of Vertex Form.

y=-2(x – 3/2)² - 1/2
Very Good

H. Application
