Task 1
Analyze the following cases of irony, antonomasia, epithets, litotes, hyperbole, meiosis and oxymoron.
Define the types, structure and stylistic functions of these lexical SDs.
1. “It was an occasion for rejoicing, perhaps, but rather for a solemn, thankful, eyes-raised-to-heaven
kind of rejoicing” (Wodehouse)
2.“For the Doctor Watson of this world, as opposed to the Sherlock Holmeses, success in the province of
detective work must be, to a very large extent, the result of luck” (Wodenhouse)
3. “One after another those people lay down on the ground to laugh – and two of them died.” (M.Twain)
4. “What a noble illustration of the tender laws of this favored country! – They let the paupers go to
sleep” (Dickens)

1. "It was an occasion for rejoicing, perhaps, but rather for a solemn, thankful, eyes-raised-to-heaven
kind of rejoicing" (Wodehouse)
· Irony: There is a mild irony here as the statement suggests a contradiction between the expected
(joyful occasion) and the actual tone (solemn, thankful).
· Epithets: "solemn," "thankful," and "eyes-raised-to-heaven" are descriptive words or phrases en-
hancing the meaning and creating a specific mood.
2. "For the Doctor Watson of this world, as opposed to the Sherlock Holmeses, success in the province
of detective work must be, to a very large extent, the result of luck" (Wodehouse)
· Antonomasia: "Doctor Watson" and "Sherlock Holmeses" are used to refer to a specific type of
characters. "Doctor Watson" is a representative of average detective work, while "Sherlock Holme-
ses" represent exceptional detective work.
3. "One after another those people lay down on the ground to laugh – and two of them died." (M. Twain)
· Irony: There is situational irony here, where the expectation of laughter turning fatal is unexpected
and contrary to what would normally be anticipated.
4. "What a noble illustration of the tender laws of this favored country! – They let the paupers go to
sleep" (Dickens)
· Irony: It's an ironic statement where the seemingly positive description ("noble illustration" and
"tender laws") contrasts with the action of neglecting the poor.
5. "Lovers speak of living deaths, dear wounds, fair storms, and freezing fires." (Sir Ph. Sidney)
· Oxymoron: This sentence contains several oxymorons, where contradictory terms are used together
("living deaths," "dear wounds," "fair storms," "freezing fires").
6. "Ви розумієте, що ви цю всю партію, ну...це ніби, це як ноєв ковчег тільки без людей..."
· Hyperbole: The phrase "це як ноєв ковчег тільки без людей" (like Noah's ark but without people)
employs hyperbole to emphasize the abundance or quantity of something.
7. "Україна постійно відчуває «дружній потиск рук на горлі» зі сторони свого північного сусіда."
· Metaphor: "дружній потиск рук на горлі" (friendly hand on the throat) uses metaphor to describe
a challenging or suffocating situation.
8. "У вузьких мистецьких колах Дмитро Лазуткін має славу неперевершеного Дон-Жуана."
· Antonomasia: "Дон-Жуан" is used to describe Dmitro Lazutkin, comparing his reputation with that
of the legendary seducer Don Juan.
9. "Нев’їзне м’ясо. Країна заборонила ввезення свинини з приморського краю РФ, Нігерії та м’яса
птиці з Канади."
· Litotes: "Нев’їзне м’ясо" (inedible meat) uses litotes to express strong disapproval or criticism by
negating the positive quality (edible).
10. "Бідна багата країна... 27,8 % українців живуть нижче офіційного рівня бідності, 83% –
фактично відчувають себе бідними."
· Irony and Hyperbole: The phrase "Бідна багата країна" (poor rich country) is ironic, and the sta-
tistics presented use hyperbole to emphasize the extent of poverty.
13. "Я зупинив таксі, але воно заявило, що не поїде туди, куди мені потрібно."
· Litotes: "не поїде туди, куди мені потрібно" (won't go where I need) employs litotes to express a
negative situation (the taxi won't go where needed).
Task 2
Define the structural type of epithets and suggest their translation into Ukrainian:
1. In the clock-ticking silence Cal began to be afraid. (J. Steinbeck)
2. A staggering array of history, natural beauty and friendly people, a journey to China remains a once-
in-a-lifetime experience, likely to be enjoyed more by the traveler than the tourist.
3. As soon as you hit the place you suffer that old I-have-been-here-before feeling. (R. Gordon)
4. The each-for-himself look in the eyes of the people about her were like stinging slaps in the face.

5. After a very early start on the stage at the age of 11, Anne Baxter spent the next 20 years shaking off
the good-girl-next-door roles that her glowing, fresh appearance kept winning her. (The Times
Play)
Epithets are adjectives or descriptive phrases that characterize a person, place, or thing by highlighting cer-
tain attributes or qualities. They play a crucial role in conveying vivid and evocative imagery to the reader.
2.Compound Epithet:
