EXPLAIN
What is Anthropology?
Anthropology comes from a Greek word, “anthropos” which means human and “logos” which means
study.
It is the holistic "science of man and his works“, the scientific study of the physical, social economic,
cultural development and behavior of human beings in a particular society.
EDWARD BURNETT TAYLOR- father of anthropology, who coined the term "culture".
BRANCHES OF ANTHROPOLOGY
1. Physical Anthropology
-concerns about how human emerged and evolved through time
-second concern is how human beings differ biologically
2. Cultural Anthropology
-concerns the difference of cultures from time to time
-deals with the investigation of the culture
3 MAIN BRANCHES OF CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY

B. Anthropological Linguistics
- study of languages. It explains the difference of languages by culture and how it is constructed.
C. Ethnology- study of recent or present cultures through vigor research (eg. concept of beauty, marriage
practices, etc. )
METHODS OF INQUIRY
1. Ethnographic Method- participant researcher conducts first-hand observation and immersion in
human activities in a particular socio-cultural setting
2. CASE STUDY- involves extensive and in depth documentation and analysis of specific subject in
focus at a smaller case which is conducted by interviewers of informants, ocular inspection of
location and etc.
3. DESCRIPTIVE METHOD- systematic collection and analytic processing of statistical data by
conducting survey of a sample size of respondents in order to accurately describe a present existing
socio-cultural condition or situation.
4. HISTORICAL METHOD- entails the reconstruction of events by piecing together evidence of the
past and examining reliable records in order to trace and explain the development or transformation
of a socio-cultural situation, group or community. (15 minutes)
