II. GEOMETRIC ISOMERS
Geometric isomers are molecules that are locked into their spatial positions
with respect to one another due to a double bond or a ring structure.
19
20
NAMING GEOMETRIC ISOMERS
1. CIS – TRANS : only with abC=Cac
2. E – Z: abC=Ccd
(Z is for zusammen, German for “together”) (E is for entgegen, German for “opposite”). 21
CAHN-INGOLD-PRELOG CONVENTION
▪ Rule 1: Higher atomic number takes precedence over lower.
In the case of isotopes, the mass number is used to determine the relative priorities.
22
CAHN-INGOLD-PRELOG CONVENTION
▪ Rule 2: When two atoms directly attached to the double bond are identical,
compare the atoms attached with these two on the basis of their atomic numbers.
Precedence is determined at the first point of difference.
24
25
▪ Rule 3: An atom that is multiply bonded to another atom is considered to be
replicated as a substituent on that atom
Double bond ≡ two single bond to that atom
Triple bond ≡ three single bond to that atom

III. OPTICAL ISOMERS
PLANE-POLARIZED LIGHT
An achiral object
Enantiomers have identical physical properties except for the rotation of plane-
polarized light and how they react with other chiral molecules
31
An achiral molecule has a superimposable mirror image
32
Most chiral organic compounds have at least one asymmetric carbon atom
(or chiral carbon)

ALLOWED MOTIONS FOR FISCHER PROJECTION
▪ 90o rotation: Rotation of a Fischer projection by 90° inverts its meaning.
• 180o rotation

RACEMIC MIXTURE
▪ A mixture of equal amounts of two enantiomers is called a racemic
mixture or a racemate.
▪ Racemic mixtures do not rotate the plane of polarized light →

A compound with n asymmetric carbons can have a maximum of 2n stereoisomers

DIASTEREOMERS
Diastereomers are stereoisomers that are not enantiomers.

MESO COMPOUNDS
50
▪ Has two or more asymmetric carbons and a plane of symmetry →
optically inactive even though it has asymmetric carbons.

Saquinavir (trade name Invirase) belongs to a class of drugs called protease inhibitors, which are used to treat
HIV (human immunodefi ciency virus). Locate all stereogenic centers in saquinavir, and label each stereogenic
center as Ror S.

Label the stereogenic center(s) in each drug asRor S. L-Dopa is used to treat Parkinson’s disease. Ketamine is
