The most important festival in India is Diwali. The holiday to celebrate Diwali
lasts for five days and involves people wearing their finest clothes and lighting
their homes with oil lamps (diyas) and candles to symbolize the triumph of
good over evil, light against dark. During the festivities, people visit family
members and enjoy delicious feasts.
Traditional Indian clothes include silk saris for women and dhoti for men -
unstitched pieces of material like sarongs that are tied around the waist and
legs.
Indian architecture is rich and diverse. The Taj Mahal in the city of Agra in
northern India was constructed in 1653 on the orders of the Mughal Emperor
Shah Jehan as a temple to his beloved wife, Mumtaj Mahal. The white marble
building is considered one of the modern-day seven wonders of the world. The
Lotus Temple in Delhi meanwhile was built in 1986 and is a fine example of
modern Indian architecture. It is a Bahai’i House of Workshop constructed in
the design of a lotus flower.
