2. Review of the Previous Lesson

Who among the class can share their learning
from our previous discussion which is about Not
mutually exclusive events?

Anyone? (One or two student/s will

‘’Yes, ______.’’ share their learnings from the
previous topic.)
‘’Very good! I guess you already understand the
previous topic, let us now proceed to our new
topic. Are you ready?’’ ‘’Yes ma’am.’’

‘’12 red marbles.’’

‘’3 red marbles’’

Observe the following situations, and find the

probability of the events.
Situation 1 (The students will read the
situations.)
Consider a box that contains 3 red marbles, 5
blue marbles, and 2 black marbles. A marble is
chosen at random, and the color is noted and
B. Activity
Drill then put back inside the box. Then, another ‘’3/10 and 5/10 or ½’’
(5mins) marble is chosen at random. Find the
probability that the first is red and the second is

Situation 2

Spin a spinner numbered 1 to 7 and toss a

coin. What is the probability of getting an odd
‘’4/7 and ½’’
number on the spinner and a tail on the coin?

C. Analysis Let us compare the two situations.

Presentation/Discussion 1. (Answers may vary.)

marble? 4. (Answers may vary.)
3. How about the second situation?
4. What conclusion can you make about events
happening in the given situations above?

In Situation 1, the outcome of one event does not

affect the outcome of the other event since the
items picked are with replacement. These are
independent events.

(The students will read the

(Presentation of Lesson Objectives) Learning Objectives.)

Independent Events

Two events are independent if the occurrence of

one of the events gives us no information about
whether or not the other event will occur; that is, the
events have no influence on each other.

Other Examples of Independent Events

1. Landing on heads after tossing a coin
AND rolling a 5 on a single 6-sided die
2. Choosing a marble from a jar AND
landing on heads after tossing a coin
3. Rolling a 4 on a single 6-sided die AND
then rolling a 1 on a second roll of the die
4. Choosing a 3 from a deck of cards,
replacing it, AND then choosing an ace
as the second card
5. Choosing a pair of socks from the drawer,
replacing it, AND then choosing a pair
again from the same drawer
6. Choosing a blue ball from a container,
returned into the container, AND then

choosing a red ball as the second ball

Probability of Two Independent Events

To find the probability of two independent
events, find the product of the probability of each
event occurring separately. In formula,
P ( A∧B ) =P (A )∙ P(B)
Example 1
Consider a box that contains 3 red
marbles, 5 blue marbles, and 2 black marbles. A
marble is chosen at random, and the color is
noted and then put back inside the box. Then,
another marble is chosen at random. Find the
probability that the first is red and the second is
blue.

Solution:
P ( red∧blue )=P ( red )∗P ( blue )
3
∗5
10 15 3
P ( red∧blue )= = ∨ ∨0.15∨15 %
10 100 20
(Less likely)

‘’ The denominator will not change since the pink

face mask was returned in the box before choosing
the blue marble.’’
‘’How about example number 2, who will try to solve
on the board?’’

Example 2
Spin a spinner numbered 1 to 7 and toss P ( odd∧tail )=P ( odd )∗P(tail )
a coin. What is the probability of getting an odd
4
number on the spinner and a tail on the coin? ∗1
7 4 2
(
P odd∧tail = ) = ∨ ∨0.29∨29
2 14 7
P ( odd∧tail )=P ( odd )∗P(tail )
(Less likely)
4
∗1
7 4 2
(
P odd∧tail =) = ∨ ∨0.29∨29 % (Students clap their hands 3
2 14 7
times.)
(Less likely)

‘’Okay, very good! Let’s give _______ 3 claps!’’

Wrap Up!
D. Abstraction ‘’If the result of the first event
Generalization doesn’t affect the other event.’’
(5mins) What makes two events independent?
What is the formula in finding the probability of P ( A∧B ) =P (A )∙ P(B)
two independent events? (Answers may vary.)
Can you give more examples of independent
events?
E. Application Group Activity: Find the probability of the
(10mins) following events.

1. Nick has 4 black pens, 3 blue pens, and 2 red

pens in his school bag. Nick randomly picks two
pens out of his school bag. What is the
probability that Nick chose two blue pens, if he
replaced the first pen back in his bag before
choosing a second pen?

2. A rental agency has 12 white cars, 8 gray
cars, 6 red cars, and 3 green cars for rent. Mr.
Escobar rents a car, returns it because the radio
is broken, and gets another car. What is the
probability that Mr. Escobar is given a green car
and then a gray car?
‘’Now, it’s time to be independent!’’

Individual Activity: (1/2 sheet of paper)

A. Answer the following.
1. Define independent events in one
sentence.
2. A coin is tossed, and a single 6-sided die
is rolled. Find the probability of landing on
the head side of the coin and rolling a 5
on the die.
F. Assessment 3. A card is chosen at random from a deck
(10mins) of 52 cards. It is then replaced, and a
second card is chosen. What is the
probability of choosing a jack and then an
eight?
4. A bag of jelly beans contains 10 red, 6
green, 7 yellow, and 5 orange jelly beans.
What is the probability of randomly
choosing a red jelly bean, replacing it,
randomly choosing another red jelly bean,
replacing it, and then randomly choosing
an orange jelly bean?
G. VALUING What do you think is the importance of studying (One or more student/s will
(5mins) independent events? share their ideas.)
In a ¼ sheet of paper, describe a situation in
H. Assignment
your life that involves independent events.
(2mins)
Explain why the events are independent.
