3. Find the probability of getting a diamond or a 2. P(Heart)= 13/52 or ¼
face card? 3. P (Diamond or face) =
4. If it is only a red card, what is the probability of 13/52 + 12/52 – 3/52=
getting a red queen? 22/52 or 11/26 (not mutually
exclusive events)

Conditional Probability (The students will read the

Learning Objectives.)
A conditional probability is the probability of an
event, given some other event has already
occurred. The usual notation for ‘’event A occurs
given that event B has occurred’’ is ‘’A|B’’ (A
given B). The symbol | is a vertical line and does
not imply division. P(A|B) denotes the probability
that event A will occur given that event B has
occurred already. We define conditional
probability as follows:

For any two events A and B with P(B) > 0, the

conditional probability of A and B has occurred is
P ( A ∩ B)
defined by P(A|B) =
P (B )

Example 1
The table below shows the number of students
who passed the test.
Female Male Total
Pass 15 9 24
Fail 31 18 49
Total 46 27 73

a. What is the probability that the student will pass

the test given that he is a male?
Solution: There are 27 males. Of these 27 males,
9 pass the test.
P ( pass∧male ) 9 1
P ( pass|male )= = ∨ ∨0.33∨33 %
P ( male ) 27 3

b. What is the probability that the student will pass

the test given that she is a female?
Solution: There are 46 females. Of these 46
females, 15 pass the test.

P ( pass∧female ) 15
P ( pass|female )= = ∨0.33∨33 %
P ( female ) 46
c. What is the probability that the student is
female given that she did not pass the test?
Solution: There are 49 students who did not pass
the test. Of these 49, 31 are female.
P ( female∧fail ) 31
P ( female|fail )= = ∨0.63∨63 %
P ( fail ) 49
(somewhat likely)

Example 2
A mathematics teacher gave her class two tests.
Twenty-five percent of the class passed both tests
and 42% of the class passed the first test. What
percent of those who passed the first test also
passed the second test?

Solution: The problem involves a conditional

probability since it asks for the probability that the
second test was passed given the first test was
passed.
P ( second ∧first ) 25
P ( second|first )= = ∨0.60∨60 %
P ( first ) 42
(somewhat likely)
Example 3.
Given that you draw a red card in a standard deck
of cards, what is the probability that it is four?

Solution: In a standard deck of cards, there are

26 red cards. Of these 26, 2 cards are red and
four (4 of heart and 4 of diamond).

P ( four|red ) 2 1
P(four|red) = = = ∨8 % (less likely)
P ( red ) 26 13

Example 4.
A die is tossed. Find P(less than 5|even).
Solution: The possible outcomes in tossing a die
are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. There are 3 even
numbers. Of these 3 even numbers, 2 are less
than 5.

P (less than 5∧even ) 2

P ( less than5|even )= = ∨67 %
P ( even ) 3
(somewhat likely)
Wrap Up
What is the probability of an event, given some Conditional probability
D. Abstraction other event has already occurred?
Generalization
(5mins)
What is the formula in solving for the conditional
probability of two events? P ( A ∩ B)
P(A|B) =
P (B )
E. Application Consider the situation and answer the questions
(10mins) that follow.

A proficiency examination for certain technical

skills was given to 100 employees of a
manufacturing firm. The breakdown of the
examination results of the employees are shown
in the table below.

Male (M) Female (F) Total
Pass (P) 24 36 60
Fail (F) 16 24 40
Total 40 60 100
Suppose that an employee is selected at random
from among the 100 employees who took the
examination.
1. Find the probability that the employee passed
the exam, given that he was a male.

2. Find the probability that the employee was a

male, given that a passing grade was received.

3. Find the probability that the employee was a

female, given that a passing grade was received.
Solve the following problems involving conditional
probability.

1. A family that is known to have two children is

selected at random from amongst all families with
two children. Find the probability that both
children are boys, given that there is a boy in this
F. Assessment family.

2. A box contains three blue marbles, five red
marbles, and four white marbles. If one marble is
drawn at random, find:

a. P(blue|not white)

b. P(not red|not white)
