So you can see the connection between the two words,

flowers and hobbies, in the examples that you have given, ( the students’ will read
right? the two passages)

Flowers and hobbies are general terms while the examples

are specific terms.

Our objective today is to distinguish between general and

specific statements.
D. Discussing New
Concepts Statements are classified as general and Specific
* General Statement - are usually the topic sentence or the
main idea of the paragraph.

* Specific Statement- are the details or small ideas that give

support to the topic sentence or main idea to make the
general statement clear.

Supporting details are specific information such as facts,

examples, reasons, statistics that elaborate on or explain
the general statement or main idea.

Specific statements answer who, what, where, when, and

why about the topic.

Remember Me:
The general statement or main idea, with its specific
statements or supporting details, is needed to organize a
paragraph. The main idea or general statement may be
directly stated in the paragraph, usually in the first or last
sentence, but not all the time.

For example:
sentence number 1
"Dory received a gift from her mother last Christmas."
- we do not know what kind of gift it was, therefore, it is a
general statement.

sentence number 2
"Mother gave Dory a red dress as a gift last Christmas."
- it stated that Dory received a red dress as a gift from her
mother last Christmas, therefore, it is specific.

Why is it considered a specific statement?

- we now know what the gift looks like, and it provides
evidence for the general statement.

Let us study more examples!

"We need water for drinking, cooking, bathing, cleaning, and

watering the plants. Water has many uses.

The specific statement comes first before the general

statement. The first sentence talks about the different uses
of water. The author is being specific with the given
examples. The general statement here is that water has
many uses, which has been put at the last sentence.

Tips to find specific and general statement

Specific statement- when things are being enumerated as

examples, explained further, or given more details.
General statement - is usually broad and does not give out
examples.

concepts and Each group will be given a passage. They will look for the
skills in daily general or main idea, it's supporting details, or the specific

" Leslie's favorite spot is her bed. It's a cozy queen-sized bed,
which can be folded into a couch (though so far there has
never been an occasion which required the bed to be folded),
layered with soft, warm quilts and piled with numerous
pillows in different sizes and colors. Leslie spends the entire
day sprawled on the bed. Her eyes glued to the huge smart
plasma TV mounted on the wall of her bedroom. Leslie's

Sun exposure is linked to skin cancer. This is the most
common type of cancer in the world. It’s best to limit your
time spent in the sun. Be sure to wear protective
clothing and hats when you are outside. Use sunscreen year-
round on exposed skin, like your face and hands. It protects
your skin and helps prevent skin cancer. Choose a broad-
spectrum sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. It
should be at least an SPF 15. Do not sunbathe or use tanning
booths.

It helps cats to tone down their scent so they can avoid
predators, it cools them down, it promotes blood flow, and it
distributes natural oils evenly around their coat, allowing
them to stay warm and dry. Grooming also serves as a sign
of affection between two cats, and it’s thought that saliva
contains enzymes that serve as a natural antibiotic for
wounds. The cats’ grooming behavior serves several
purposes.

G4
Weathering and erosion are very slow processes.
Geologists believe the Colorado River has been flowing
through the Grand Canyon for at least 17 million years, and
it has been gradually shaping the canyon this entire time.
The flowing water of the river and its tributaries has carved
away at the rock of the Colorado Plateau, creating the
amazing sight that is seen nowadays.
