Good Morning, class!

Kindly all stand for the prayer. Let us all remember… Amen.

Before you take your seat, kindly align your chairs

properly and pick up some pieces of papers on the (Students do as told)
floor.

Since I already introduce myself to you last meeting,

how are you going to call me again, class? Ms. Marie

Alright!

How are you this morning? We are good, miss.

Are there any absentees? None miss.

Are there any assignments that need to be passed? None miss.

Just like your any other teachers, I also have my set

of classroom rules, and it has an acronym of LRBB.

L- Listen
R- Respect
B- Be quiet and stay focus on the lesson
B- Be attentive and participate in our discussion.

What is the acronym of our classroom rules? LRBB

I want you to observe these classroom rules

throughout the class.

Am I clear? Yes miss.

1. Review

Before we proceed with our new lesson this morning,

let us first have a short review through an activity.

What topic did we discuss last meeting? The topic that we discussed last meeting was all

Wow! You got 4/4 score and excellent for that! It

means that you really understood our topic last
meeting and now ready for a new topic this morning.

Give yourselves a round of applause. (Students do as told)

2. Motivation

Before we move on to a new topic this morning, let

us take a look at this statement on the screen.

What are your thoughts about ChatGPT? Are you for

ChatGPT or against it? (Students’ answer may vary)

What do you feel about this idea? I think ChatGPT is very useful, especially during
times that I cannot immediately think of
something. ChatGPT gives me ideas that are
fresh.
Thank you for that. Would anyone like to contradict
your classmate’s answer? I think ChatGPT should not be promoted because

it increases the laziness of people. They will end
up relying on AI to make things for them.
That is correct! Which side do you think convinced
you more about what to believe in? (Students’ answer may vary)

Alright! Expanding on what we've talked about, it's

clear that considering different opinions is important
to understand things better.

3. Statement of the Subject Matter and Objectives

So this morning, we will explore how using the right

words helps us express claims and counterclaims
clearly, as we discuss the importance of “Using
Appropriate Grammatical Signals or Expression of
Idea Development: Claim and Counterclaim.”

Kindly read our topic this morning. Using Appropriate Grammatical Signals and
Expression of Idea Development: Claim and
Counterclaim
Everyone must listen attentively because at the end of
the lesson you are all expected to attain these
following objectives.

a. Identify grammatical signals used in claim and

counterclaim pattern of idea.
b. Use appropriate grammatical signals or
expressions suitable to each pattern of idea
development: claim and counterclaim.
c. Discuss the importance of supporting evidence in
an argument or claim.

Are the objectives clear, class? Yes miss.

A. Activity

Before we formally discuss our lesson this morning,

let us first define what claim and counterclaim are.

Kindly read the definition of claim on the board

Claim
- is the main argument of the text.

Counterclaim
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
- the opposing argument or viewpoint of the claim

In pattern of idea development …

Claim and Counterclaim pattern

- refers to the structure of presenting a side of an
issue in an argumentative manner.

A claim is the writer’s stand on a topic supported by

evidences and logical reasoning. Also, the writer
presents the counterclaim or the opposite stand of an
issue to disprove it through evidences and logical
reasoning.

Any questions?

Directions: Divide the class into 5 groups. Convert

the given statements into counterclaim. Make sure to
use appropriate transition words. Be guided of the
given example.

Example:
Claim: Fast food restaurants should be considered
a healthy restaurant because they offer vegetables,
fruits, and safe drinking water.

Counterclaim: On the contrary, fast food

restaurants should not be considered a healthy
restaurant because the foods served are not
nutritious.

B. Analysis

Now, based on the activity you did earlier, let us

check all of your answers.

For group 1’s assigned statement, “Cell phones

should not be allowed in classrooms because they
distract students.” Since the claim here suggests cell
phones should be banned, you will find opposition in
advocating for their integration as valuable
educational tools when used responsibly.

In group 2’s statement, “Everyone should adopt a

stray dog or cat since they need homes."

This statement asserts that everyone should consider

adopting a stray dog or cat because these animals are
in need of homes. Since the claim here advocates
universal adoption of stray animals, you will
encounter opposition arguing for individual choice in
contributing to animal welfare, whether through
adoption or other means.

In group 3’s assigned statement, the claim made here

is that students should not be compelled to participate
in physical education classes because not all students
possess athletic abilities. Since the claim here argues
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
against mandatory physical education, you will find
opposition advocating for the retention of such
classes, emphasizing their benefits beyond
athleticism.

For group 4’s assigned statement, since the claim here

praises social media for staying in touch, you will
encounter opposition emphasizing the need for
moderation due to its potential negative effects like
addiction and privacy concerns.

And for group 5, the claim here asserts that school

uniforms improve academic performance, you will
find opposition questioning this correlation and
advocating for a more comprehensive approach to
education.

Great job, everyone! I'm impressed with the effort

you have put into your group work. Now, let's move
on to an important aspect of critical thinking and
argumentation.

Example:
People believe that rock music can make teenagers
rebellious because of its lyrics but, I don’t think it
is enough to make them go against society. They
say rock music concentrates mostly on antisocial
subjects which influence teenagers’ view toward
society. However, a study shows that an average
teenager would not take the music seriously, for he
or she concentrates more on the musical value of
the song rather than the inner meaning of the lyrics.
Thus, even though the lyrics in rock music show
social rebellion, it does not make teenagers rebel
against society.

What have you observe in the example?

Alright, let's focus on the first two lines of this

paragraph. What claim do you observe there? In the first two sentences, the author claims that
people believe that rock music can make the
Correct! teenagers rebellious because of its lyrics. The
author thinks that it is not enough to make them
go against society.
The author indeed suggests that there's a common
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
belief among people that rock music's lyrics have the
potential to influence teenagers to become rebellious.

Now, let's move on to the next sentence and see how

the author builds upon this initial claim. In the next sentence, the author expresses doubt
about whether this belief is sufficient to cause
teenagers to go against society.
Right! The author questions whether the belief about
rock music causing rebellion is sufficient to make
teenagers defy society, urging us to consider different
viewpoints.

Now, let's continue analyzing the rest of the

paragraph to see how the author supports or
counterclaim these initial claims. In the next sentence, the authors then oppose the
former claim.
Did you notice a transitional signals or words in the
sentence? Yes miss.

Can you give one? One of the transitional signals that is used is the
word “but.”
Perfect!

In this paragraph, "but" is used to introduce a

contrasting viewpoint or evidence that challenges the
initial claim that rock music can make teenagers
rebellious because of its lyrics.

Okay, what other transitional signal can we found? The coordinating conjunction “for”, miss.

Exactly! The transition signal "for" in this context is

used to introduce a reason or explanation supporting
the preceding statement regarding teenagers not
taking rock music lyrics seriously.

Another one? Another one are thus and even though.

Fantastic! So, in this example, "Thus" signifies a

conclusion drawn from the presented evidence, while
"even though" acknowledges a contrary viewpoint
before introducing contrasting evidence.

Here is another example.

3. Although some believe video games improve

decreased social interaction and physical activity.

Questions? None miss.

Now, let us know the transitional signals used in

counterclaiming claims. These signals help to
smoothly introduce opposing viewpoints in our
discussions and essays.

A. Using transitions to signal a claim is a great way to

let the reader know when you are adding your own
thoughts.
▪ Therefore ▪ Furthermore
▪ Finally ▪ Similarly
▪ While ▪ In other words
▪ For example ▪ Because
▪ That is to say ▪ A great way
▪ Additionally

Using transitions such as "therefore," "finally," or

"for example" effectively signals to the reader that
you are introducing your own thoughts or claims
within your writing.

And for counterclaim transitional signals, here are

some of the commonly used:

B. Counterclaim Transitional Signals

Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
▪ Even though ▪ Because of the fact
▪ However ▪ Due to the fact
▪ Others may say ▪ For the simple reason
▪ Nevertheless ▪ Although
▪ On the other hand ▪ But in reality

These transitional signals serve to introduce

contrasting viewpoints or counterarguments
succinctly within an argumentative context.

Any questions? None miss.

C. Abstraction

Again, what is claim and counterclaim in pattern of

idea development? It refers to the structure of presenting a side of an
issue in an argumentative manner
Very good!

How about the writer’s stand on a topic supported by

evidences and logical reasoning? It is called claim.

What about the opposite stand of an issue to disprove

it through evidences and logical reasoning? It is called counterclaim

Can give an example sentence demonstrating a claim

and a counterclaim pattern? Reading books is crucial for intellectual
development. However, some contend that
practical experiences and hands-on learning also
significantly contribute to intellectual growth.
Magnificent! It means that you really understood our
discussion this morning.

Give yourselves a clap A. Begin! (Students do as told)

D. Application

Now that we've grasped the concept of grammatical

signals and their relevance in expressing ideas
effectively, let's delve into our first activity focused
on utilizing appropriate grammatical signals in
crafting claim and counterclaim patterns for idea
development.

Activity 2: Easy Essay!

Are there any questions about our topic today, class? None miss.

Values Integration

Going back to our discussion earlier, just as one of

your classmates said that in stating a claim, it should
come with evidence.

It is also the same from spreading rumors. Now,

class, was there an instance that you spread a rumor
without a strong ground? Or shall we call it
“Marites.” Yes, miss, sometimes we do that one.

Can you share with the class what it is? (Students’ answer may vary)

Alright!

As a student, how will you ensure that the

information you claim with others is factual? By verifying the information before spreading the
rumors.
Exactly! We should always verify the information we
are spreading, so there will be no conflict happened.
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity

Am I making sense here? Yes miss.

Alright! Then now, to further assess your

understanding on our lesson this morning, let us have
a quiz.
