1.3 DEFINITIONS
A. The following definitions shall be used for the common interpretations of terminologies applicable
for the project:
1. Core Area (Ac): The gross area containing all the openings of the Air Terminal Device
(ATD).
2. Free Area (A): The sum of the smallest areas of the cross-section of all the openings of an
ATD.
3. Effective Area (Ao): The smallest area of an ATD through which air passes and which may
not be equal to its free area. It is given by: Ao = Cd A where A is the free area and Cd is a
discharge coefficient which usually varies between 0.65 and 0.9.
4. Free Area Ratio (Ra): The ratio of free area to core area.
5. Envelope: A surface of the jet produced by a supply ATD which has the same velocity,
usually taken to be 0.25 or 0.5 m/s
6. Throw (Xm): The maximum distance between the plane of a supply ATD and a plane
which is tangential to the jet envelope and perpendicular to the initial jet direction.
7. Drop or Rise (Ym): The vertical distance between the centre of a supply ATD core and a
horizontal plane tangential to the envelope.
8. Spread (Zm): The maximum horizontal distance between two vertical planes tangential to
the envelope of a supply ATD and perpendicular to a plane through the core axis.
9. Core Velocity (Uc): The volume of air flow rate divided by the core area of the ATD.
10. Discharge Velocity (Uo): The average velocity at the discharge from an opening of an ATD
which is equal to Uc/(CdRa).

A. Manufacturer: Firms regularly engaged in the manufacture of air terminal devices whose
products have been in satisfactory use for a similar application for not less than 10 years.
B. Installer: Firms regularly engaged and qualified in the installation of air terminal devices with at
least 5 years successful installation experience on projects of a similar nature.
C. The Contractor shall obtain applicable test certificates for equipment under this Section to
demonstrate adequate works testing for quality, performance and compliance with relevant
codes.
D. Obtain via the manufacturer, verification using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software for
the performance of grilles and diffusers for special/specific selection, for example, high spaces
using linear slot diffusers, displacement ventilation, etc., to ensure efficient air mixing, throw
achieved and thermal comfort.
E. For grilles and diffusers shown in the Schedules, full performance testing shall be carried out in a
purpose-built test rig or room to demonstrate the performance of the equipment. The Employer’s
Representative shall witness these tests and all associated costs shall be borne by the
Contractor.
A. Supply 1 set of special keys/tools for adjustment of air terminal devices as appropriate.
1.8 WARRANTY
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 GRILLES
A. Grilles shall be of aluminum extrusion of the types and sizes shown on the Drawings and in the
Schedules and shall be of the concealed fixing type. Where the size is not indicated, grilles shall
be selected for the air volume flow rates indicated in the Schedules to achieve the required
throw, and be within the relevant noise level for the area being served.
B. All grilles shall be provided with an aluminum opposed blade multi-leaf damper, with loose key to
allow adjustment of the concealed adjuster from the face of the grille. One loose key for every 20
grilles shall be provided.
C. Each supply grille shall have two sets of individually adjustable aluminum blades, one set
horizontal, the other vertical.
D. Extract grilles shall be as shown on the Drawings, and in the Schedules. Where the grille is not
required to be matched to the supply grille, it shall be of the egg-crate type, unless otherwise
specified in the schedules.
E. For kitchens and dining rooms, grilles shall have quick release sub-frames.
F. Non-vision grilles as shown on the Drawings shall be of the inverted chevron type, comprising a
non-vision insert core held firmly between two mating flanged frames. For door-mounted
applications, grilles shall be rattle-proof and provided with screw fixings and telescopic aluminum
frames.
G. All grilles shall be supplied with a stove enamel paint finish to an approved color as approved by
the Employer’s Representative to match with the ceiling finish.
2.2 DIFFUSERS
A. Air diffusers shall be supplied and installed in accordance with the duties, sizes and locations
shown on the Drawings.
B. Square diffusers for both supply and return air shall be manufactured from extruded aluminum
and shall be supplied complete with opposed blade volume control dampers. Both dampers and
grilles shall have concealed screw type fixings. Spring clip fixings shall not be permitted.
C. Where a supply diffuser is directly connected to a stub duct which has a straight length of less
than two diameters or equivalent diameters, then an equalizing grid or deflector shall be used.
D. The frames of all diffusers shall be provided with positive seals with the exception of those
mounted on exposed ductwork. Frames shall be of a type compatible with the ceiling type or wall
finish.
E. Linear slot and continuous slot diffusers shall be constructed from extruded aluminum and shall
be supplied complete with pattern control element. Linear slot diffusers shall have mitered
flanges, end caps and concealed fixing straps. Spring clip fixings shall not be permitted. Where
linear slot diffusers cross partition locations, closure plates shall be provided to give a neat
termination line on either side of the partition.
F. All return air square diffusers shall be identical to the supply air diffusers within each conditioned
zone.
G. All diffusers shall be supplied with a stove enamel paint finish to an approved color as approved
by the Employer’s Representative to match with the ceiling finish.
H. All diffusers shall be provided with galvanized steel plenum boxes lined with acoustic insulation.
The plenums shall be sized to match the diffuser and shall be complete with fixing lugs and shall
incorporate a cone iris type central damper adjustable from the diffuser face and sized to restrict
the re-generated noise level. Plenums shall also include pitot tube connections for use in
commissioning of systems.
I. The Contractor shall ensure that the grille and diffuser manufacturer assesses volume flow,
throw, maximum noise level and maximum pressure drop data as shown in the Schedules and
confirm that his selections comply with the stated parameters.
J. Special radius continuous slot diffusers shall be manufactured from site dimensions to ensure full
co-ordination with the ceiling.
2.3 LOUVERS
A. Air intakes and discharges associated with air handling plant shall consist of ducted connections
made to flanged openings formed in the galvanized sheet steel blanking plates fixed to the rear
of building weather louvers complying with Division 10.
B. The blanking plates shall be used to cover over un-used areas of the weather louvers.
C. Sand trap louvers shall be incorporated into air intake ductwork sections where indicated. The
sand collection efficiency of the sand trap at a face velocity of 0.6 m/s shall be not less than 80%
with a sand having 92 % of particles falling within the 150 to 425 microns range. The pressure
loss shall not exceed 30 Pa.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 INSTALLATION
A. Air terminal devices shall be identified by reference number as to their final location. Plenum
boxes shall be similarly numbered to reduce the risk of incorrect matching.
B. Grilles, diffusers and plenum boxes shall be supported independently from the building structure
unless otherwise instructed by the Employer’s Representative. Grilles, diffusers and plenums
shall not be supported from the ceiling grid.
C. All volume control dampers shall initially be left in the fully open position ready for
commissioning.
D. Diffusers shall be securely fixed to plenum boxes by means of concealed adjustable mounting
brackets.
E. Side wall grilles shall be fixed to grille plenum boxes or direct to the duct wall as shown on the
Drawings.
F. During construction, ensure that the location and fixing of all grilles and diffusers is fully
coordinated between the relevant trades.
G. Continuous slot diffusers shall have hairline butt joints and shall have provision for alignment to
ensure an unbroken visual line. Make up pieces shall be site measured and factory cut. Site
cutting of diffusers shall not be permitted.
A. Air terminal devices and associated components shall be inspected and tested in accordance
with Section 23 08 00.
