I. LESSON TITLE LAN CABLING

II. CONTENT/CORE CONTENT
(Learning Competencies/ Objectives) At the end of this learning period, students will be able to:
 Identify the tools and materials used in making a LAN cable.
 Explain the importance of the correct sequence in color coding
wire in a Straight-Through LAN cable.
 Create a working Straight-Through LAN cable.

IV. PROCEDURES
(LEARNING PHASES)
A. Establishing a purpose for the
lesson. (Motivation) What Am I? The teacher will call 5 students one-by-one in order to
pick a card containing various networking devices. Their task is to
identify what are those devices in front of the class. This activity will
be executed with the help of an online educational site called
Wordwall.

B. Reviewing previous lesson or

presenting the new lesson (Activity) Deciphering Codes: The class will be divided into 8 groups. Each
group will receive a set of code in the form of numbers printed on a
paper, each corresponding to a specific letter on the alphabet. The
students will decipher the code as the teacher flash the letters
corresponding to the right number.

C. Presenting Examples/Instances of
the new lesson. (Analysis)
1. How did you manage to decipher the given code?
2. What have you noticed about the words you deciphered?
3. Based on the activity, what do you think will be our topic for
today?

D. Discussing new concepts and LAN CABLING

practicing new skills (Abstraction)
Tools and Materials used in LAN Cabling

TOOLS

Cable Tester – is used to test a cable to find out if it

is good or to find out what type of cable it is. A cable tester has two
components, the remote and the base.

Wire Stripper – is used to cut away the plastic

jacket or coating around the wires inside a twisted-pair cable so that
you can install a connector on the end of the cable.

Crimper/Crimping Tool – is used to attach a

terminator or connector to the end of a cable. It
applies force to pinch the
connector to the wires in the cable to securely make a solid connection.

MATERIALS

Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) Cable – is a

type of twisted pair cable that is used in local area networks to connect
a computer to a network hub such as a router. On a straight-through
cable, the wired pins match.

RJ45 Connector – registered jack 45, is an eight-

wire connector used to connect computers to category 5 unshielded
twisted pair cables in a network.

Straight-Through Color Coding of Wires

Steps in Making Connections

Step 1 - Strip the cable end
Step 2 - Untwist wire ends
Step 3 - Arrange the wires
Step 4 - Trim all wires to size
Step 5 - Attach connector

Step 6 - Check
Step 7 - Crimp
Step 8 - Test

The teacher will play a 2-minute video showing the process of making
a LAN cable.
E. Developing Mastery Processing Questions:
1. For the tools we have?
2. How about the materials?
3. The correct sequence of color coding of wires starts with? Then
followed by?
4. The steps in LAN cabling are?
F. Making Generalization and Doing the correct color coding technique in making a straight-through
Abstraction about the lesson LAN cable is important because the alignment of wired pins on each
end should match the other. Connection will be compromised if the
contrary is performed. It is also significant to follow the procedure in
LAN cabling to reduce the consumption of materials and for safety
purposes as well.
G. Finding Practical application of Let’s make a LAN cable!
concepts and skills in Daily Living
(Application) The class will be divided into pairs. Each pair will be given a UTP
cable and two RJ 45. Their task is to make a straight-through LAN
cable, each pair will work on both ends. Their output will be tested
using a LAN tester provided by the teacher.

The students will be graded in accordance with the following criteria.

As a student, in what particular situation will your learning be applied?
