II. Rationale

In recent years the plastic consumption has increased manifolds

leading to accumulation of plastic waste in large amount. Plastic pollution

can alter habitats and natural processes, reducing ecosystems' ability to

adapt to climate change and directly affecting millions of people's livelihoods,

food production capabilities, and social well-being. One of the significant

challenges we are facing today is solid waste and solid waste management.

Plastic is harmful to our environment and health. Waste plastic bags being

nonbiodegradable and extreme durability make their disposal process

difficult. It doesn't get disposed of in the soil or water. It remains in the

environment for hundreds of years and causes air, land, and water pollution.

The main cause of the problem is that people do not realize that they pollute

the environment with plastic by throwing trash anywhere without thinking of

the environmental consequences.

In our current situation, where is plastic waste management. The

Governments are key actors in the plastic value chain and there are several

things that they can do: First, they can eliminate the plastic products we do

not need, through bans. Governments can also promote innovation so the

plastic we need are designed and brought into the economy in a way that

allows for it to reuse. There are also has a number of actions that the plastic

industry can take to accelerate this systematic change: They can eliminate

problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging or products by redesigning

products for enhanced sustainability and innovating their business models to

move from single use to reusable plastic products.

In Lipa City alone, over 167 kilos of garbage are produced per day,

making it the second biggest waste generator in Batangas province. (JPAIR

Multidisciplinary Research, 2021. Inefficient waste collection and the lack of

disposal facilities are the common problems in developing our municipality.

Due to a lack of resources to purchase advanced and expensive

technologies to support waste management activities in every municipality.

The purpose of this project is to create a smart trash bin to reduce plastic

waste and help lessen pollution.

ALIGNMENT IN SDG
• SDG 3: Good health and well-being

Achieving this goal requires urgent action on plastic waste

management due to its detrimental effects on human health.

Substantially reduce the number of deaths and illnesses from

hazardous chemicals and air, water and soil pollution and

contamination. By adopting sustainable practices such as recycling

and raising awareness about proper disposal methods, we can

minimize the negative impact of plastics on our environment and

safeguard our own well-being.

• SDG 6: Clean water and sanitation

An improvement in freshwater quality is mandated under the sixth

sustainability goal. The amount of water that is accessible for safe

consumption must be increased while reducing pollution in inland

bodies of water and purifying a greater volume of water. Decrease the

amount of untreated wastewater by half, eliminate dumping, limit the

release of dangerous substances, and significantly increase recycling

and safe reuse on a worldwide scale to improve water quality.

Reducing single-use plastics, implementing recycling programs, and

educating people about responsible behavior will help save our limited

water supplies and provide a better environment for future

generations.
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY Page 11
The National Engineering University

• SDG 7: Affordable and clean energy

By adopting renewable energy sources and ensuring their affordability

and accessibility in this sector, we can reduce environmental pollution

caused by improper disposal of plastics while also mitigating climate

change impacts. It is imperative that governments, industries, and

individuals work together to make affordable and clean energy a

reality in plastic waste management practices worldwide. Ensure

universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services

• SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities

The effective collection and processing of waste, although seen as a

basic and indispensable service, is missing in many cities and other

residential communities. Sustainable cities and communities are

encouraged by SDG 11 to manage plastic waste. The implementation

of comprehensive waste management systems and education

programs targeted at altering individual behavior are necessary to

accomplish this goal. Working together, different stakeholders can

help ensure that plastic pollution is properly controlled and reduced in

the future.
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY Page 12
The National Engineering University

• SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production

Mass production and consumption of plastic, especially that of single

use packaging plastic, are major contributors to plastic pollution in the

sea and on land. Substantially reduce waste generation through

prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse. SDG 12's focus on

responsible consumption and production is crucial in tackling the

global problem of plastic waste management. By promoting

sustainable alternatives and implementing effective policies, we can

work towards a cleaner and greener future for our planet. It is

imperative that individuals, governments, and businesses collaborate

to achieve these goals for the benefit of current and future

generations.

• SDG 13: Climate action

The issue of plastic waste management has become a pressing

concern for our planet's climate. The reduction of CO2 emissions

which would prevent an average temperature increase of two degrees

is an extremely urgent environmental goal. By raising awareness,

promoting innovation, and fostering international cooperation, we can

create a sustainable future where our planet is free from the harmful

impacts of plastic
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY Page 13
The National Engineering University

• SDG 14: Life below water

The fourteenth sustainability goal is aimed at avoiding and strongly

reducing the pollution in the sea, especially from waste that originates

on land. Cleaning up plastic from beaches and capturing the plastic at

sea are important, but overall, these efforts are of little help if the flow

of plastic is not reduced at the same time. Prevent marine pollution,

particularly from land-based activities. By implementing effective

strategies like reducing single-use plastics and improving recycling

infrastructure while raising awareness among individuals, we can

mitigate the harmful effects of plastic pollution on our oceans and

ensure a sustainable future for all living beings that depend on them.

• SDG 15: Life on land

Plastic pollution has become a pressing environmental issue, with

devastating consequences for life on land. Every year, millions of tons

of plastic waste end up in our forests, and other natural habitats. This

not only harms wildlife but also disrupts entire ecosystems. Recycling

facilities should be easily accessible to communities worldwide,

ensuring that plastic waste is properly sorted and processed into new

products. we can protect our terrestrial ecosystems from further harm

caused by plastic pollution. It is our responsibility to take action now

for a greener future where life on land thrives without being suffocated

by plastic waste.
