In previous lesson, you learn the significance of
meiosis in maintaining the number of
chromosomes in an organisms right?
 Review
But how’s the behavior of chromosomes
during meiosis related to heredity?

analyzing the given pictures and letters by
following the mathematical formula.

 Motivation

Sometimes you hear people say that you have

your mother’s nose your height is like your
father’s.
And do you think that we really look like our
parent?
Introduction
Well, traits really are inherited from our
parents, how did this happen? By discussing
our topic today, you will understand how traits
passed from one generation to the next.
Interaction For today’s lesson we are going to discuss
about Mendelian Genetics, the most essential
learning competency for today’s topic is to
predict phenotypic expression of traits
following the simple pattern of inheritance.

HEREDITY, VARIATION, PRINCIPLE OF

DOMINANCE, LAW OF SEGREGATION,
RECESSIVE TRAITS, DOMINANT TRAITS, this are
some words that you may encounter.

We already know that Genetics is the study of

Heredity and Variation.

So class, any idea what is Heredity and

variation?
Heredity - is the study of how traits are Passed
on from parents to the offspring.

Variation -is the study on how we understand

why there is a differences in an organisms.

In year 1800 the biologist start to study about

heredity using scientific experiment.

who knows this man?

This is GREGOR JOHANN MENDEL

An Augustinian Monk.
He is known as the Father Of Genetics.

So where did Gregor Mendel discovery about

Genetics came from?

This discovery starts when he study about Pea

Plant.

What have you notice about this plant?

Mendel notice some characteristics or traits of

pea plant and he use this to be his tool for his
scientific experiment.

So this is the 7 easily recognizable trait in pea

plant.

But how did Mendel do this experiment?

He began cross pollinating the pea flower with
contrasting traits.
But he did not use the usual pollination
process that we know.

This is the pollination or plant reproduction

that we usually know that the bee as a
pollinator collects pollen from one flower and
takes this to the stigma of another flower but
Mendel use a hands on pollination for his
experiment.

In his process there’s no pollinator involve

instead he use a paint brush to collects pollen
from the flower and brush it off to the other
flower that stamens are already remove.

This two flowers with different traits or color

called the First Paternal (P1) Generation.

After this crossbreed he got the result that the

the offspring inherit only in one parent and he
called this offspring First Filial (F1) Generation
or Hybrid.
Mendel didn’t stop at this stage,he self
pollinate the two First Filial (F1) Generation
and he got the result that the trait that not
inherit in the first process appeared in this
stage and this offspring is called Second Filial
(F2) Generation.

He repeated this process and got the same

result and he hypothesized that the
appearance of traits were controlled by factors
called Genes and each traits is controlled by
two alleles.

So what is the difference between Genes and

Alleles?

Gene- is the unit of hereditary information.

Alleles - alternative version of an specific gene.

So let us have the Mendelian Principle, there

are two.
1. Principle of Dominance
2. The Law of Segregation.

First the Principle of Dominance

-it state that one member of the factor may
hide or prevent the appearance of the other
factor.

Dominant trait- the most expressed or visible

trait.
Recessive trait-the stays hidden trait.

Scientist use two symbol to represent the two

allele that they want two study. The capital
letters represent the dominant trait and the
small letter if the trait is recessive.
Here our example:
Flower color
Colored - F
White- f
F1 Colored -Ff

We have here the term , Homozygous

Dominant, Homozygous Recessive and
Heterozygous or Hybrid.
So what is the differences of there Allele?

Take note that each individual may have

identical alleles or different alleles for a
particular genes.

FF- Homozygous Dominat

Ff- Homozygous Recessve
Ff- Heterozygous/ Hybrid

Got it Class? Any question before we proceed

to our second Mendelian Principle?

Law of Segregation
- it states that the pair of genes segregate or
separate from each other during gamete
formation or meiosis.
