1. Estimate the distance over which a load of 15,000 kW at 0.85 power

factor can be delivered by a 3-phase transmission line having conductors of
steel-core aluminum each of resistance of 0.56 ohms per km. The pressure
delivered at the receiving end is to be 132 kV and the loss in transmission
is not to exceed 7.5%.

2. What load can be delivered by a 3-phase overhead line 5 km long with a

pressure drop of 10%. Given that the station voltage is 11 kV, resistance
per km of each line 0.09 ohms, reactance per km 0.08 ohm and the power
factor is 0.8 lagging.

3. A 50 kW at 11 kV are received from a 3-phase transmission line each wire

of which has a resistance of 1.2 ohms and reactance of 1 ohm. Calculate the
supply pressure when the power factor of the load is a.unity b.0.5 leading

4. A 3-phase, 50-Hz transmission line 10 km long delivers 2,500 kVA at 10

kV. The p.f. of the load is 0.8 lagging. The resistance of each conductor
is 0.3 ohms/km and the inductance is 1.82 mH/km. a.Find the voltage and
p.f. at the sending b.The efficiency of transmission and c.The percent
regulation of the line.

5. The input to an induction motor from a 13 kV, 60 Hz line is 1000 kVA, at

0.8 pf lagging. A capacitor is placed in parallel with the motor to improve
the pf. Calculate the capacitance required raising the power factor to 0.9
leading.

6. A three-balanced load draws a line current of 80 A at 0.9 lagging power

factor. Solve the minimum size in kVAR of the capacitor bank needed to
raise the power factor to 0.95 leading, if the line-to-line voltage is
13,200 volts.

7. Two Y-connected, induction motors are fed by a 4160 V, line to line, 3-

phase 60 Hz motor-control center 20 feet away. Motor 1 drives a 600-Hp
compressor. The efficiency of this motor is 90% and its power factor is
0.5. Motor 2 indicates 1730 kW, 277 amperes. Determine the capacity in
microfarads per phase of a wye-connected bank that is required to correct
the power factor of the total load to 0.966 lagging.

8. A 2.3 kV three-phase system supplies a 120-kW, 0.6 pf lagging balanced

load. Determine the capacitance in each phase of a wye-connected capacitor
bank to adjust the power to 0.9 lagging.

9. Three Y-connected, loads are fed by a 4160 V, line to line, 3-phase 60

Hz. Load 1 drives a 500-Hp compressor. The efficiency of this load is 90%
and its power factor is 0.6 lagging. Load 2 has a rating of 1600 kW, and
draws 250 amperes lagging. Load 3 draws a current of 150 A with a power
factor of 0.8 leading. Determine the capacity in microfarads per phase of a
wye-connected bank that is required to correct the power factor of the
total load to 0.966 lagging.
