Lesson Idea
What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea? Students will create their own eBook
using either PowerPoint, Sway, or Canva to identify and explain igneous, sedimentary, and
metamorphic rocks.
☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.
X Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.
☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:
The students will be asked to prepare a presentation to identify and explain the three
different types of rocks (igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic). While this is a fairly
independent and student led task, however there will be many management and
engagement strategies in place to keep students on task. The first being that students will be
put in pairs to compete the assignment (collaborative pairs). This will keep students on task
and engaged as they can problem solve together, and bounce ideas off one another. The
students will also be developing a storyboard together before the starting on their eBook.
This will ensure that the students have direction and know where their story is headed before
starting to incorporate technology. Students will also be guided through setting daily goals to
help them along with the pacing if their projects. Again, this will keep students engaged and
on task by establishing something for them to work toward and somewhat of a pacing guide.
Lastly, the students will have time limits when working on their eBooks. They will work on
them during their science instruction time which is typically 35 minutes. This means students
will work for 15 minutes, have a 5-minute break, then continue working for the last 15

minutes. This keeps students focused on the task at hand. Overall, the assignment will be
mostly student-led with certain procedures in place to keep students focused.
Students will also be working in pair in order to work through this process collaboratively.
This will allow the students to work through the content and the technology troubleshooting
together. I look forward to seeing what my students make and letting their creativity take
over. I feel like third grade students love to bring a personal flare and creativity into learning,
so I feel like this is perfect for them. This covers the UDL principle of multiple means of
engagement.
