A. Preparation for Test

The personnel conducting the testing must be qualified to operate the

SAES-P-104
A1 test equipment and also familiar with the cable system and its
Sec. 4.1
components.
At all ends from where the test equipment is to be connected, position a
SAES-P-104
A2 guard or barricade the area to prevent unauthorized access to the
Sec. 4.1
Overhead system under test.

Check the DC high-potential test set for proper operation. Ensure that the
SAES-P-104
A3 input voltage to the test set is regulated. Check test set and test leads at
Sec. 4.1
testing voltage level (lead in place but not connected).

SAES-P-104
A4 Check clearances at the Overhead conductor ends.
Sec. 4.1

SAES-P-104
A5 Use weather protection.
Sec. 4.1

Ground adjacent conductors and adjacent objects near the conductor SAES-P-104
A6
ends. Conductors not under test are to remain grounded at all ends. Sec. 4.1

SAES-P-104
A7 Remove all grounds from conductor to be "hi-potted".
Sec. 4.1

SAES-P-104
A8 Determine temperature of test set at the time of test.
Sec. 4.1

SAES-P-104
A9 Determine rate of rise on voltage applied at the time of testing.
Sec. 4.1

Hi-pot Test After Mounting or Forming Terminations - Check that

terminations are not connected to the equipment. ( Note: If conductors SAES-P-104
A11
are left connected to the equipment, the hi-pot shall not exceed the rating Sec. 13.2 (d)
of the equipment).

Hi-pot Test After Mounting or Forming Terminations - Check that there SAES-P-104
A12
are sufficient clearances from enclosures and other adjacent objects. Sec. 13.2 (d)

The medium conductors shall be tested in accordance to the voltage

level listed below.

DC High-Potential Field Test Voltages

Perform DC High-potential testing in accordance with conductor and test SAES-P-104

instrument manufacturer recommendations. Sec. 4.1

Apply the test voltage slowly in a minimum of five equal increments until
maximum test voltage is reached, with no increment exceeding the
SAES-P-104
A17 voltage rating of the conductor, and with each voltage step being held for
Sec. 4.1
an equal interval of time long enough to allow the leakage current to
reach stability, approximately 1 to 2 minutes.

Reading of leakage current and voltage shall be recorded at the end of

each minute prior to increasing to the next specified voltage level. SAES-P-104
A18
NOTE: A linear increase in leakage current is expected, and it should Sec. 4.1
stabilize or decrease from the initial value at each step.

Plot test voltage versus leakage current on graph paper as the test
progresses.
SAES-P-104
A19 NOTE: Any excessive or non-linear increase in leakage current can
Sec. 4.1
indicate imminent cable failure. Discontinue the test and, consult the
manufacturer for recommendations.

Calculate the resistance of the cable at each step. Note: At any step
where the calculated leakage resistance decreases approximately 50%
SAES-P-104
A20 or more of that of the next lower voltage, discontinue the test to prevent
Sec. 4.1
conductor failure and to retain the conductor in a serviceable condition
until a replacement conductor is available.

Upon satisfactory completion of test, connect conductors to equipment. SAES-P-104

A21
Tighten connectors to manufacturer recommended torque levels. Sec. 4.1
