GUIDE CARD

Good day to you my friend! Have you ever

wondered why the Philippines experiences different
atmospheric conditions in certain months? Or what
are the different factors that affects seasons in the
Philippines?

With the different activities, you will know

the seasons in the Philippines and the factors that
affects it. There are series of questions/activities to
be answered. You cannot proceed until you answer
it correctly.

In measuring your mastery of the concepts,

you have to answer the assessment and
enrichment exercises. The reference card will show
the sources of this material.

ACTIVITY CARD
SEASONS in the
Philippines!

BACK NEXT
ACTIVITY # 1

Here are the two seasons in the

Philippines and they are the dry season and
the wet season.

dry season wet season

BACK
ACTIVITY # 1

During the dry season, there is a very little

rainfall. The sun always shines during this
season, bringing much heat. Flowers bloom
and fiestas in the country are celebrated. Trade
winds coming from the east prevail over the
country from March to May.

Farmers Festival May Flower Festival

BACK
ACTIVITY # 1

It is during the wet (rainy) season, when the

country experiences most of the storms. The storms with
their strong wind and much rain bring destruction to life
and property. There is a flood that covers the land. It
carries soil, plants, and properties depending on its flow.
planting of rice is usually done during this time. This
season starts in June and ends in November.

ACTIVITY # 2

The factors that affects the seasons in

the Philippines are as follows: wind systems,
latitude (location), bodies of water, and
amount of rainfall.

wind systems latitude

bodies of amount of
water rainfall

BACK Main Menu

Wind Systems ACTIVITY # 2
The wind movement also
influences the season of a particular
place. The unequal heating of the
Earth’s surface results in the
formation of the different wind
systems.
The wind that blows in a
certain direction carries with it
water vapor and a range of
temperature. Winds moving across
bodies of water carry a lot of water
vapor.
The seasons in the
Philippines highly affected by the
wind systems which includes the
northeast monsoon, the southwest
monsoon and the trade winds.

BACK NEXT
ACTIVITY # 2

How are wind systems formed?

A. Wind systems are formed by the Earth’s gravity.

B. Wind systems are formed by the Earth’s rotation

and revolution.

C. Wind systems are formed by the atmosphere and

the magnetic field of the Earth.

D. Wind systems are formed by the unequal

distribution of heat on Earth’s surface.

BACK
Wind Systems – Northeast
Monsoon (Hanging Amihan)
ACTIVITY # 2

From October to February, a high pressure area

develops over Southern Siberia and India in winter
because of the cold air over these places. This mass of
cold air moves toward the Pacific Ocean. It reaches
the Philippines from a northeasterly direction; thus the
name northeast monsoon (hanging amihan). This
monsoon brings cold mornings and heavy rainfall
along the eastern coastal regions of the Philippines.

BACK NEXT
Wind Systems – Southwest
Monsoon (Hanging Habagat)
ACTIVITY # 2

On the other hand, winds coming from

Australia are known as southwest monsoon. Southwest
monsoon (hanging habagat) brings much rain
throughout the country. It absorbs much moisture from
the surrounding bodies of water such as Pacific Ocean
before it reaches the country. This climatic condition
prevails from June to September or the wet season in
the Philippines.

BACK NEXT
Trade Winds ACTIVITY # 2

Trade winds are

prevailing winds in the
tropics. They are the winds
blow from the same
direction most of the time.
These wind system affect
the Philippines whenever
the monsoon weaken
during the rest of the year.
South Pacific
Trades bring humid
weather in the month of
July and North Pacific
trades bring warm weather
during the months of
March to May.
BACK NEXT
ACTIVITY # 2

Why does the Hanging Habagat bring rain in

the Philippines?

A. because the air has so much clouds

B. because of the heat coming from the sun

C. because the air that surrounds the country is cool

D. because it absorbs much moisture from the

surrounding bodies of water

BACK
Latitude ACTIVITY # 2
The Earth is divided by
imaginary lines that run parallel
to the equator, going north or
south. The lines are called
latitudes. The latitudes are
divided into degrees. Places near
the equator have low latitudes.
The places near the poles have
high latitudes.

The Philippines is located

near the equator or in the so
called Torrid Zone also known as
Tropics. Countries that lie near the
equator receive direct vertical
rays of the sun, hence, the
Philippines have hot or warm
BACK climate during times of the year. NEXT
ACTIVITY # 2

How does the location of the country in

terms of latitude affects its season?

A. It affects its season by altering the moisture in the

air.

B. The latitude of the place has something to do with

air pressure.

C. The countries laid in the tropics have higher

tendency to create typhoon.

D. It influences its season by the amount of sunlight

received in that particular zone.

BACK
Bodies of Water ACTIVITY # 2

Bodies of water, such as oceans and seas, also affect

the climate and seasons in the Philippines.
Observe the climate in the coastal areas, It is cooler in
these places. Water does not absorb heat as fast as land areas.
It slowly releases heat to the environment. This is the reason why
places surrounding these bodies of water have mild climate.
Furthermore, the Philippines is surrounded by bodies of
water most especially the Pacific Oceans in the east of the
country. Because of the bodies of water, the Philippines often
visited by typhoons and receive a lot of precipitation or rain.

What body of water can be found in the east
of the Philippines?

A. Celebes Sea

BACK
Amount of Rainfall ACTIVITY # 2
The amount of rainfall is also a factor that affects
the season of the Philippines. It is the quantity of water
falling in rain within a given time and area. When it
seldom rains in an area, that place has a pronounced
dry season. When it always rains, that place is wet most
of the year.

BACK NEXT
ACTIVITY # 2

When do you consider the season as dry

season in relation to the amount of rainfall?

A. When it is affected by the trade winds.

B. When it is influenced by the earth’s rotation.

C. When the amount of rainfall is high in certain

months like in June.

D. When it seldom rains in an area, that place has a

pronounced dry season.
