FLANGED BOLT

COUPLINGS
Flanged Bolt Couplings
A flanged bolt coupling is commonly used
between connection of two shafts. It consists of
flanges rigidly attached to the ends of the
shafts and bolted together.
Flanged Bolt Couplings
The load in any bolt is given by the
equation:

=(

where:
A = area of
bolt
= Shearing
Stress
Flanged Bolt Couplings
The torque resistance of a bolt is
given by the formula:
𝑻 =𝑷𝑹

where: P = Force, R
= Radius
Therefore the torque capacity for
any number of bolts is:
𝟐

𝝅𝒅
𝑻 =𝑷𝑹𝒏= 𝝉 𝑹𝒏
𝟒
Flanged Bolt Couplings

If a coupling has two concentric

rows of bolts, the torque capacity
can be computed by:

𝑻 = 𝑷𝟏 𝑹 𝟏 𝒏  𝟏+ 𝑷 𝟐 𝑹 𝟐 𝒏𝟐

where the subscript 1 refer to

bolts on the outer circle and
subscript 2 refer to bolts on
the inner circle.
Flanged Bolt Couplings
For rigid flanges, the shear deformations
in the bolts are proportional to their radial
distances from the shaft axis.

simplified as:

For three or more concentric bolt circles,

similar procedure can be used.
Problem
1:
A flanged bolt coupling consists of eight 20-
mm in diameter steel bolts spaced evenly
around a bolt circuit 300mm in diameter.
Determine the torque capacity of the
coupling if the allowable stress (shearing) in
the bolts is 40Mpa.
Solution 1:
Given:
D = 20 mm 𝝉 = 40 MPa
R = 150 mm n=8

𝝉=; P=A𝝉
T = PRn
T = (A𝝉)Rn
T = (40Mpa)()(150mm)(8)

T = 15080 N•m or 15.080 kN•m

Problem 2:
A flanged bolt coupling consists of six 10mm
diameter steel bolts on a circle 300mm in
diameter, and four 10mm diameter steel bolts
on a concentric bolt circle 200mm in diameter.
What torque can be applied without exceeding
a shearing stress of 60MPa in the bolts?
Solution 2:
Given: Req’d:
n1 = 6 n2 = 10 T
d1 = 20 mm d2 = 8
R1 r2 =

steel bolts that must be used on the
300mm bolt circle of the coupling
described in Problem 2 to increase the
torque capacity to 8KNm.
