Introduction to Hysteresis Motor
• Type of a synchronous motor with a uniform
gap & without DC excitation.
• Operates in both 1-Φ & 3-Φ supply.
• Torque produced due to hysteresis and eddy
current.
• Working depends on continuously revolving
magnetic field.
Construction

Construction of stator:
• Stator produces rotating magnetic field.
• Similar to stator of induction motor.
• Stator winding of 1-Φ motor is made of permanent
split capacitor/shaded pole type.
• Capacitor is used with auxiliary winding to produce
magnetic field.
• 3-Φ motor produces more uniform rotating field to
that of 1-Φ motor.
Construction of rotor:
• Core is of aluminium or other non-magnetic
material with layer of special magnetic
material (chrome , cobalt steel).
• It has high retentivity.
• Rotor of motor is a smooth cylinder .
• It has no winding.

Advantages of hysteresis motor:
•   noise level in comparison to 1- motor.
low
• motor can be resized for multiple speed.
• very small in size.
• has no teeth and no winding in rotor,no
vibrations during operation.
Limitations of hysteresis motor:
• poor output.
• low efficiency.
• low torque.
• low powerfactor.
Applications
• Sound producing equipment.
• Sound recording instruments.
• High quality record players.
• Timing devices.
