in Condition A? How about in Condition
B?
3. Which Condition made you cram?
Converse, Inverse
and Contra-positive
statements
Learning Outcome:
At the end of this presentation, you
will determine the converse, inverse and
contra-positive statements of
Conditional Statement.
Conditional Statement
This is a statement in the form if p, then q
where p is the hypothesis and q is the
conclusion. The logical symbol → is used to
indicate that the statement is conditional.
In symbol: p→q
Converse of the Conditional Statement

The converse statement is a statement whose

hypothesis and conclusion of the conditional
statement are interchanged. It is in the form
if q, then p.
In symbol: q→p
Contrapositive of the Conditional
Statement

The contrapositive statement is a statement

whose hypothesis and conclusion of the
conditional statement are negated and
interchanged. It is in the form if ~q, then ~p.
In symbol: ~q → ~p
Inverse of the Conditional Statement

The Inverse statement is a statement whose

hypothesis and conclusion of the conditional
statement are negated but not interchanged. It is
in the form if ~p, then ~q. The symbol ~ is used
as negation
In symbol: ~p → ~q
Examples:
Underline the hypothesis and put a
box in the conclusion and state the
converse, inverse and contrapositive of
each of the following:
Examples:
1. If two numbers are not positive, then its
product is not negative.
2. If two angles are right, then they are
congruent.
3. If a man believes in Jesus Christ, then he is
a Christian.
Solution : Hypothesis

1. If two numbers are not positive, Conclusion

then, they are not positive.
Solution : Hypothesis

1. If two numbers are not positive, Conclusion

then its product is not negative.

Inverse:
If two numbers are not not positive,
then its product is not not negative..
Solution : Hypothesis

then its product is not negative.

Inverse:
If two numbers are positive,
then its product is negative..
Solution : Hypothesis

1. If two numbers are not positive, Conclusion

then its product is not negative.

Contrapositive:
If the product of two numbers is not not negative,
then, they are not not positive.
Solution : Hypothesis

1. If two numbers are not positive, Conclusion

then its product is not negative.

Contrapositive:
If the product of two numbers is negative,
then, they are positive.
Solution : Hypothesis
2. If two angles are right, Conclusion
then they are congruent.

Converse:
If they are congruent,
then, two angles are right.
Solution : Hypothesis
2. If two angles are right, Conclusion
then they are congruent.

Converse:
If two angles are congruent,
then, they are right.
Solution : Hypothesis
2. If two angles are right, Conclusion
then they are congruent.

Inverse:
If two angles are not right,
then, they are not congruent.
Solution : Hypothesis
2. If two angles are right, Conclusion
then they are congruent.

Contrapositive:
If two angles are not congruent,
then, they are not right.
Solution : Hypothesis

3. If a man believes in Jesus Christ,

Conclusion
then he is a Christian.

Converse:
If he is a Christian,
then, a man believes in Jesus Christ.
Solution : Hypothesis

3. If a man believes in Jesus Christ,

Conclusion
then he is a Christian.

Converse:
If a man is a Christian,
then, he believes in Jesus Christ.
Solution : Hypothesis

3. If a man believes in Jesus Christ,

Conclusion
then he is a Christian.

Inverse:
If a man believes not in Jesus Christ,
then, he is not a Christian.
Solution : Hypothesis

3. If a man believes in Jesus Christ,

Conclusion
then he is a Christian.

Inverse:
If a man does not believe in Jesus Christ,
then, he is not a Christian.
Solution : Hypothesis

3. If a man believes in Jesus Christ,

Conclusion
then he is a Christian.

Contrapositive:
If a man is not a Christian,
then, he does not believe in Jesus Christ.
Activity: If I can, I will!
Convert each of the statements
below into If-Then form and
identify the hypothesis and the
conclusion.
1. Filipinos are God-fearing people.
2. Staying at home is free from
COVID-19 infection.
3. The sum of the interior angles of
a triangle is 180 degrees.
Solution:
1. Filipinos are God-fearing people.
If-then Statement: Hypothesis
