Objective:

Animal Form and Function

(Reproduction)
Types of Reproduction
• Sexual – production of new living organism by
combining genetic information from two
different sexes

• Asexual – production of new living organism

by just a single organism
How do animals reproduce sexually?

1. Bisexual Reproduction
Two parents are distinct in sex,
male and female, producing
gametes sperm and egg which
then when united and fertilized will
become the offspring
Hermaphroditism
It involves animals that have both male and
female reproductive organs within the
same individual.
How do animals produce asexually?

1. Binary Fission
It is simply the separation of
the body into two new
individuals as it goes through
the cell cycle and in mitosis.
2. Budding
It is the development of a new individual
by virtue of outgrowths or buds from the
parents.
3. Parthenogenesis
It occurs when an unfertilized egg undergoes
mitosis without cytokinesis, and the two nuclei
fuses to form a diploid nucleus.
4. Fragmentation
It occurs when the parents split into
fragments and each fragment is capable of
becoming a new individual.
