Two Types of Festival in the Philippines:

1. Religious Festival

2. Non-Religious Festival
Religious Festivals
- is a time of special importance marked by adherents to that
religion.
Ex. Pahiyas, Fertility Dance, Moriones, Ati-atihan, Sinulog, Dinagyang
and Santacruzan.

Non-Religious Festivals
- These festivals focus on the cultural and heritage aspect of
our country , and are celebrated with enthusiasm and passion.
Ex. Panagbengga, Maskara, Kaamulan, Kadayawan.

What is FESTIVAL?
Festival is an event ordinarily celebrated by a community
and centering on some beliefs and its religion or traditions.
An organized set of special events, such as musical
performances or plays, usually happening in one place, or
a special day or period, usually in memory of a religious
event, with its own social activities, food, or ceremonie
a gathering of people to celebrate something.
SUBLIAN FESTIVAL
The highlight of the two-week long festival is the Subli
dance, a worship dance of the Holy Cross.

Sublian came from the word subli, a combination of the


words subsub, a Tagalog word, which means falling on
the head,or being in a crouching position; and bali, a
Tagalog word, which means broken or bent.
Sublian is a festival celebrated in Batangas City every July
23 in honor of the town patrons: the Holy Cross
ATI-ATIHAN FESTIVAL
 The Ati-atihan festival is very lively, colorful and it is a weeklong
fiesta. It is a feast held annually in honor of Sto. Nino in the island
of Kalibo, Aklan.

 This is a celebration in honor of the Infant Jesus, the town's


patron. Ati-Atihan, observed in honor of the Child Jesus. Ati-atihan
means 'making like Atis,' that is, pretending to be like the
aboriginal natives that once inhabited Aklan.
Ati-atihan Festival is held annually in January in honor of the
Santo Niño. The biggest celebration is held during the third Sunday of
January in the town of Kalibo, the province's capital.
SINULOG FESTIVAL
 The word “Sinulog” means “graceful dance”, wherein it all started in 1980 with a
simple dance that represents the “sulog” (or current) of a river in Cebu.

 The festival is characterized by a very long parade with many groups of people
dressed in colourful costumes, finding their way through the streets while dancing the
Sinulog.

 This Sinulog dance is now the traditional ritual dance in honor of Santo Niño. The
dance is accompanied by the sound of the drums while the dancers move two steps
forward followed by one step backward.
Sinulog Festival is held on the 3rd Sunday of January in Cebu City
and is the centre of the Santo Niño Catholic celebrations in the
Philippines.
Importance of Philippine Festivals:

1. It restores moral and social values.


2. We discover new interest.
3. It teachesus to love diversities.
4. It can help our country to increase our
economy.
5. It preserves our traditions and beliefs.

Instruction:
I have here a Mask and 10 Flags or Banderitas. Inside these
Banderitas are questions. You will pass this to your
classmates while the music is playing. When the music stops,
the person who has the mask will pick one Banderitas and
answer the question inside.
