 SIWES INTRODUCTION
The students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is an accepted skills program which
forms part of the approved academic standards in the degree program for Nigerian Universities
and Polytechnics in 1974.
The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is funded by Industrial Training
Fund (ITF).
The aim of the programme is to provide avenue for students in the Nigeria universities,
polytechnics to gain industrial skills and experience in their course of study.
And to prepare students for the work methods and techniques in handling equipment and
machinery that may not be available in the universities, polytechnics.

 BRIEF HISTORY OF BASIC HEALTH CENTRE, AKURE
The Basic Health Centre is a public hospital, located at Shagari, Akure South Local
Government of Ondo State.
It was established in the year 1999 and operates on 24 hours basis.
The centre offers the following medical services; medical services, surgical services,
ambulance services, dental services, pediatrics services.
The objective is to maintain and manage a general medical clinic to adequately treat and
manage general medical conditions in Akure and beyond.

TEST FOR BLOOD SUGAR
Blood sugar test is a procedure that measures the amount of sugar or glucose in the blood.
It can be used to test for diabetes and blood sugar levels.

 PROCEDURE
The fingertip of the patient was wiped with an alcohol swab
The fingertip was pierced with a sterile lancet
The strip was inserted into the Glucometer and was allowed to beep
before placing the blood on the strip.
The blood specimen was placed on the glucometer strip
The result was observed.

Fasting Blood Sugar 4.0 – 6.0 gmmol/dl

Random Blood Sugar 7.0 – 10.0 gmmol/dl

 CONCLUSION
My four months industrial training at THE BASIC HEALTH
CENTRE, AKURE, ONDO STATE has been the most interesting and
educative experience in my life.
I have gained new insight and more comprehensive understanding on
how to conduct tests for patients, practiced and improved my knowledge
about what laboratory tests are based on.

 RECOMMENDATION
I recommend that all students involved in Student Industrial Working
Experience Scheme (SIWES) should take it seriously.
I will like to recommend that, the school should be responsible for the
placement of students in relevant industries in good time before the
commencement of the program so as to ensure we are properly
monitored and to alleviate the problems faced by students in securing
placements
