PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION
 PRESENTING PROBLEM:
 HAPPY is one of the scholars of Caritas Manila and currently an incoming 2nd yr.
student taking up BS Social Work who has a financial problem with her
miscellaneous fees and other needs that she has to provide for herself and family.
 UNDERLYING PROBLEM:
 HAPPY’s parents income is not enough for their needs. She has siblings that are
studying and a toddler that needs milk, diaper, vitamins, etc.
 Her grandfather also needs medical attention due to cataract.
 Their family doesn’t have any other source of income due to lack of resources.
 They have accumulated debts due to insufficient income & mishandled finances.
PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION
 WORKING PROBLEM:
 HAPPY was granted scholarship that covers her basic tuition fees which means she
has to pay her miscellaneous fees, internet connection for online class, and
transportation costs for the incoming face to face classes.

 Sufficient meals for her siblings especially the toddler.

 Medical assistance for her grandfather’s cataract.

 Part-time job considering her capability to multi-task school & household

responsibilities.

 Livelihood for her family.

 Stress and anxiety.

BACKGROUND OF THE CASE
 CLIENT

 HAPPY can be described as a woman of strong character since as the eldest in the family, she
became an independent teenage girl.

 She is also a jolly and fun girl which was evident during our formation session despite all the
hardships she has been through. Her enthusiasm was also seen during the conduct of various
games and activities at the session since she is an active participant.

 HAPPY is a persevere person. Her current situation makes her eager to complete her studies.

 HAPPY was able to provide for her family once since she got an opportunity to be a player in
a well-known mobile application (axie infinity) which boomed in the height of pandemic.
Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to save because all of her earnings went to provide for her
family and pay their family debt. She lost the job since the demand suddenly dropped.
BACKGROUND OF THE CASE
 FAMILY BACKGROUND

 HAPPY’s parents were born and raised in Metro Manila who both came from Low-income
class families.

 Both parents only finished high school.

 At the age of 17, her mother started to work in various jobs in order to provide her family and
personal needs.

 Doing construction works has been her father’s primary income since he started working.

 They are currently residing with her grandfather’s house.

 Bad drinking habit has been a problem with her mother.

BACKGROUND OF THE CASE
 RELATIONSHIP OF THE FAMILY

 HAPPY grew up without the presence of her father since his job required him to
be in various locations which resulted to poor relationship with her.

 Their mother-daughter relationship depends on her capability to help financially.

When she was working before, her mother treats her nicely. But now, she always
get scolded and belittled due to her inability to help.

 She has established strong bond, good communication, and affection with her
younger siblings since she took care of them mostly when her parents are working.
BACKGROUND OF THE CASE
 SOCIO-ECONOMIC SITUATION

 HAPPY’s mother being an on-call laundrywoman earns 500 pesos per customer. In a
month, she roughly makes 2,000 in this type of job which is being threatened by
competition from cheaper laundry shops.

 As a minimum wage construction worker in Baguio City, the client’s father earns
roughly ₱3,000- ₱3,400 weekly.

 Their family belongs to Low-income class based on her parent’s combined monthly
income which ranges between ₱12,000 - ₱15,000.

 Her father’s weekly salary is used to pay their debt for food and other daily needs of
the family.
ASSESSMENT
This is a case of 19 year old student HAPPY who aims to achieve her goals which is to
complete her studies and at the same time help the family in providing their needs. Being the
eldest, she learned to embrace her responsibility in their household as she grew up. When
opportunity came to her in the pandemic, she took risk to be a player in order to provide
additional source of income for her family. This somehow eased her situation but
unfortunately it didn’t lasted long which led her back to the same problem again.

Her case can be correlated with Rational Choice Theory by Adam Smith,
which explains why people make the choices they do, as people weigh risks, costs, and
benefits before making decisions.

Thus, as the intern for the client, I utilized problem-solving as my practice model in creating
interventions for her anchored on the general objective. Since I was able to establish rapport
with her, we were able to individually identify her problems, create an action plan to solve it,
and implement the possible solutions to it.

EVALUATION
 HAPPY became more confident in bringing up what she is feeling or thinking since we
built rapport with each other. There were times that she randomly sends messages
expressing what she went through recently and how does she feel about it. And as her
confidant, I carefully listened, understood, and gave comforting words for her. Before,
she has no one to share this things because of her situation.

 She continuously explores opportunities that can land her a part-time job since acquiring
new techniques in job hunting.

 Upon establishing the linkages for her needs, she became eager to find more possible
guarantors of her various requests for financial, livelihood, and medical assistance.

 The cash grant that was provided gave her the will to believe that whatever problem she
has, there is always a solution to it. Since she got a seminar about finances, she carefully
manages that grant given to her in order to avoid mishandling of it which happened
before.
RECOMMENDATIONS
 Conduct a follow-up on the status of her financial, livelihood, and medical assistance
applications.

 Seek an update on her part-time job application.

 Communicate with the client from time to time to check her current situation.
