Learning Activities

A. Introduction This lesson will give you an understanding about pre- harvesting operation in
rice production.

There are pre harvests operations that you need to undertake to come up
with a good quality rice yield. One is the seedling management; it is very
important to determine first the best variety of rice which is high yielding,
with high quality of harvest and suited to climatic condition of the locality.
Once you have met that requirement you can now decide on the
methods of raising seedlings to use based on the availability of water and site
selection for seedling management. The following are the method of raising
seedlings.

1. Wetbed Method- this is usually done within 25-30 days before


transplanting. It is generally used in areas where water is not a
problem even in rainfed areas.
2. Dapog Method- it is used or applicable in irrigated land with a
well- supervised and controlled irrigation system. Soil medium is
not a requirement in this method, prescribed area (40sq.m/ha)
3. Modified mat nursery- in this method seedlings are ready for
harvesting within 15-20 days, and it needs a minimal amount of
soil, water and fertilizer requirements.
In establishing a modified mat nursery you will need the following:
A. Seed: To plant 1 ha of land you will need the following requirements:
 2 seedlings/hill at 20 X 20 cm spacing
 use 18–25 kg good quality seeds
Reminder: Good seeds result in lower seed rate, more uniform
germination, healthy seedlings, minor chance for replanting, lesser
weeds, and 5–20% increase in harvest.
B. Nursery area: You will need to prepare the following:

 100 m2 nursery for each 1 ha of land to be planted.


 Select level area near the house and/or a water source.
 If the area is not sufficiently compacted, then spread a plastic
sheet or banana leaves on the marked area to prevent roots
growing into soil.
C. Soil mixture:
 Four (4) m3 of soil mix is required for each 100 m2 of nursery.
 Incorporate 70–80% soil + 15–20% well-decomposed organic manure

 5–10% rice hull or rice hull ash.
 Mix around 20 kg N/ha (1.5 kg powdered diammonium phosphate
 Or 2.0 kg 15-15-15 powdered NPK fertilizer for every 100 m2 of
nursery area).
D. Pre-germinating seed:
 Soak the seeds for 24 h (some varieties may need longer to bud).
 Drain and incubate (cover and keep moist) the soaked seeds for
another 24 h. At this time, the seeds sprout (bud) and the first seed
root grows to 2–3 mm long.
E.. Laying the soil mixture:
 Place a wooden frame of 0.5 m long, 1 m wide and 4 cm deep
 Divide it into 4 equal segments on the plastic sheet or banana
leaves.
 Fill the frame almost to the top with the soil mixture.
 F. Sowing:
 Sow the pre-germinated seeds uniformly and cover them with a
thin layer of dry soil. (Approximately 1 seed/cm2)
 G. Soaking the seedbed:
(a) Soak the seed bed properly moisten it with water
(b) Continue the process, like fill soil mix-sow seed-cover
seed- water, until the required nursery area is
completed.
 H. Watering:
 Water the nursery as needed to keep the soil moist.
 Protect the nursery from heavy rains for the first 5 days after
seeding (DAS).
 If the nursery can be flooded then at 7 DAS, maintain a 1 cm
water level around the mats.
 Drain the water two days before removing the seedling mats
for transplanting.
 I. Fertilizer topdressing (optional):
 If the temperature and water are sufficient, but the seedlings
show
yellowing (N deficiency), then apply seedlings with 0.5% urea (1.5
kg Urea in 300 l water/100 m2).
 J. Lifting seedling mats:
 Seedlings reach an expected height for planting in 15–20 DAS.
 Lift the seedling mats and transport them to the main
field. Reminders:
 This method is advisable for irrigated areas. If you do late
transplanting, seedlings can be damaged when separated for
planting.

Another pre harvesting operation is the planting and
transplanting, There are two main practices of establishing rice
plants. These are
1. Direct Seeding- It involves broadcasting dry seed or pre-
germinated
seed
2. Transplanting seedlings- The pre germinates seedlings are transplanted
from a seedbed to a wet field.
B. Development In rice production you need to understand that seedling management is
very important in able to produce quality seedlings especially for
transplanting purposes and more importantly for higher yield or good
production.
