FOOTHILL OF MADNESS: SIMO MATAVULJ`S HRISTOS
VOSKRESE
Summary
The lesser-known Matavulj`s story Hristos Voskrese (1905) presents a
mechanism of developing madness in an individual or group, by a social enforcement that causes great fears and deep mental crashes. The narrators comments on the result of such enforcement carries a sentimental tone of social
conformism. However, the description of the enforcement itself is extraordinarily
sophisticated, plastic and carries an ethical value. The article establishes this duality, expressed as the narrators undeciseveness, and examines its effects onto the
aesthetic value of the story. Connections are established between the story Hristos Voskrese and the medieval novel Varlaam and Joasaf, the oriental legend of
the little Buddha and the works of art of the Belgrade painter Djurdje Teodorovic.
