Shelton Sergeant Injured by Drunk Driver 


      On 07-03-10, Sergeant Orville Smith, a 39 year veteran of the police department, was
working a private duty job at the intersection of Leavenworth Rd (Rt. 110) and Indian Well Rd.
Sergeant Smith was standing adjacent to his police vehicle. The police vehicle, which had the
lights flashing, and Sergeant Smith were in the shoulder on the southbound lane.

      At approximately 10:15 PM a Nissan Frontier pick-up, traveling southbound on Rt. 110,
veered in the shoulder and struck Sergeant Smith and the police vehicle. Sergeant Smith was
rushed to Bridgeport Hospital with severe injuries. He is conscious, but still in ICU.

      The driver of the Frontier, 63 year old Bruce Knapik of 96 East Eaton St in Bridgeport, was
arrested and charged with Driving under the Influence. Knapik did not claim any injuries.

      The accident is being investigated by The Trumbull Police Traffic Division Reconstruction
Team with assistance from The Shelton Police Traffic Division Reconstruction Team. The
accident is still under investigation.
