Sinia Mii
Summary
After the Battle of Kosovo (1389) and the death of Prince Lazar, fight began for
his legacy. Because his sons were underage, Princess Milica took over the fight in
the name of Lazarevic family. The country was threatened by the Turks, Hungari-
ans, and internal struggles between nobility begun. However, the main opponent
was Vuk Brankovic, who claimed, for himself and his children, certain rights to
Lazars legacy. Princess Milica, with the support of the Serbian church, decided
that Lazarevici family will become Bayezids vassals. This eliminated the risk of
Hungarians and their alliance with Vuk Brankovic. The canonization of Prince La-
zar contributed to the empowerment of Stefans and Vuks rights to inheritance, as
offsprings of the holy dynasty Nemanjic.
Because of Stephens juvenile age, family co-regency was created, led by his
mother, Princess Milica. She remained ruler after she became nun (1393), and her
role has become particularly important in 1398, and all the way until 1402. After
that, she remained ruler but with reduced power (influence). By then, her son Ste-
fan, already despot, became a principal member of the family and the most impor-
tant Serbian ruler in the remaining Serbian lands.
Keywords: Princess Milica, Lazars heritage, vassalage, co-regency, Prince Ste-
fan Lazarevic, Vuk Brankovic, Turks, Hungarians.

Dejan Jemenica
Summary
Among the prominent Serbian women of the middle Ages, the appearance
(personality) and activity of Princess Milica, later known as nun Eugenia or ab-
bess Euphrosine strongly marked the time in which she lived. For the last decade of
fourteenth and half of the first decade of the fifteenth century in medieval Serbia,
which were in every sense marked by her activity, we can say that it represents The
age of Princess Milica. This time period, crucial in many ways, was often the sub-
ject of scientific interests. Nevertheless, to the versatile personality of Princess Mi-
lica, attention was paid only incidentally, in the context of broader or more general
considerations. For this very reason, many of the details of her activities have rema-
ined unexamined so far or at least not sufficiently. The age of Princess Milica can
be, with no major difficulties, divided into three clearly distinctive periods. Within
each of those periods there were different manifestations of her power and influen-
ce. The first period ended with the Battle of Kosovo in 1389. The second period
lasted till she became nun in 1393. The third and last period lasted till the death of
abbess Euphrosine in 1405. This paper discusses some issues concerning power and
influence, their forms and typology in the case of Princess Milica, or, as she is later
known, nun Eugenia.
Keywords: Princess Milica, Prince / Despot Stefan, Serbia, Middle Ages, power,
influence.

Dragia Bojovi
Summary
In this paper are emphisized talents of Princess Milica or nun Eugenia, by which
she is known, not only as a talented writer, but also as a brilliant connoisseur of
biblical theology and liturgical poetry. The introduction of prayer as subgenre of
Charter is associated with Stefan the First-Crowned, and her sophiologic and escha-
tological motifs make her close to St. Sava, Domentijan and other Serbian writers.
Motifs introduced in her charters, belong to rich and varied range of general
christian motifs and some of them closely link her to the Serbian medieval writers.
Particular attention was given to the Psalm motifs which the author skillfully incor-
porates into her arengis, and with that she achieves power of poetic expression, but
also gives a prophetic vision of the Church of Christ. Sophiologic and eschatologi-
cal motifs are those of the New Testament provenance, where one can particularly
feel the influence of the Holy Apostle Paul, and the evangelists Matthew and John.
Some of the thoughts of Princess Milica are the result of the acceptance of the litur-
gical poetry, and of that she herself testifies in a prayer where she addresses to
Christ, who, as she says, receives " also from us sinful, slavoslovlje and spiritual
service." This liturgical consciousness of the author is a testimony to her active mo-
nastic, spiritual and liturgical life, but it is also important evidence of her authors-
hip. Such consciousness has also influenced the poetics of her arengi, which she
wrote when she was a nun.
Keywords: Princess Milica, literature, charters, sophiology, eschatology.

Boris Stojkovski
Summary
In the paper the author provides concise but until these days the most com-
prehensive and detailed overview of the Serbian-Hungarian relations from 1389
until 1402. These ties mainly consist of the four military campaigns led by Hungari-
an king Sigismund of Luxembourg against in that time, Ottoman vassal state of
Serbia. Those campaigns had lasted, with interruptions, from 1389 until 1392. The-
re were four of them, two of a very strong character, in which the leading noblemen
of Hungary took part of-in 1389 and 1392. In these four campaigns, which were
mostly led during the summer and early autumn, Hungarian army managed to come
very deep into the Serbian land, but decisive success has been absent. In 1389 and
in 1392 some Serbian cities and Fortresses were occupied, but the luck has been
changing throughout this period. The campaigns were led not only against Serbia,
but mainly against Turkey. In the analysis of these events and ties, articular stress
has been given to non-published Hungarian archival sources, mostly charters, but
on the new interpretation of the known ones as well. Narrative sources, such as
chronicles, also give interesting data on the topic. Besides the detailed analysis of
the military campaigns of the Hungarian king Sigismund, the author will also dis-
cuss some other aspects of Serbian-Hungarian relations. Serbian nation was in that
time divided between two strong countries-Turkey and Hungary. In the battles of
Rovine and Nicopolis in 1395 and 1396 Serbian noblemen were fighting eiher on
both sides, or against Christians. In the same time, a significant Orthodox Serb popu-
lation has already in this period inhabited the southern borders of Hungarian state.

Katarina Mitrovi
Due to the clauses found in the peace treaties signed in Zadar in 1358 and Tri-
n in 1381, the Republic of Venice had to give up on its properties in the eastern
Adriatic coast from Quarner to Durrs on behalf of Hungary. Since the eastern Ad-
riatic coast was of vital strategic and economic significance, the Venetians tended
to retrieve the lost positions timely and tactfully as well as to acquire some new
properties. Their breakthrough in Zeta and the northern Albania, i.e. the territories
belonging to the Nemanjii state started by the conquest of Durrs in 1392. The
Venetians in Zeta and the northern Albania used similar tactics to those applied in
the other parts of Stato da mar, keeping in mind primarily their own interests fit-
ting the new property into the existing economic order, current material and military
potentials, strategic position, diplomatic implications and the expenses of defending
from the point of materially profitable view. Only if the majority of these demands
were fulfilled, they would start the serious negotiations regarding the surrender of
some city or territory. Besides, Venetians wanted to establish the best possible rela-
tions with the hinterland landlords basically for two reasons: to prevent the probable
attacks of the former masters and their heirs who reluctantly quit their old rights and
those more or less legitimate claims and to provide the freedom of movement and
doing business for their citizens and tradesmen. Therefore, getting some commerci-
al and other concessions was often followed by the readiness of the Venetian side to
allow certain well planned concessions to the neighbouring rulers which were valid
only as long as it suited the interests of the Republic. The main Venetian political
directions were clearly visible in the relations with ura II Stracimirovi Bali,
the lord of Zeta, and with the lords of the Serbian mainland states the families of
Brankovi and Lazarevi. Considering the relations with Vuk Brankovi and his
sons, the tactfulness is obvious regarding the return of the jewelry from the dowry
of Vojislava Brankovi, the wife of George Topia, while in the relations with Prince
Stefan and Princess Milica the primary focus is cast on the efforts concerning the
acquisition of the commercial concessions. Furthermore, the work proves that Prin-
ce Lazar and Vuk Brankovi did not issue any concessions to the Venetian citizens
guaranteeing them the freedom of movement and conducting business in their
territory. The exposure ended in 1405 when the First Shkodr War broke out
signifying the new phase in the relations of the families of Bali, Brankovi and
Lazarevi.
Key words: Venice, Zeta, northern Albania, Serbia, Bali family, Vuk Branko-
vi, Princess Milica, Stefan Lazarevi, political relations, commercial concessions.

Summary
Author releases trace attitudes f historiography about the campaign of Hunga-
rian king Sigismund of Luxemburg on Serbia in October-November 1389, after the
Battle of Kosovo, discusses possible motives and causes of the attacks. Already a
cursory glance at the Hungarian diplomatic material confirms the view that the
Hungarian king this military action considered a legitimate act of returning their
cities and areas of the rebel Rascians. The death of Prince Lazar certainly can be
linked with the context of the feudal customs, present in Hungary, the rulers used
the death of his powerful subjects to restore public lands that were in the previous
period stabilized in their hands. In any case, it was a clear military and strategic in-
terests of Hungary. The question, however, whether the Knez Lazar on the eve of
the Battle of Kosovo regarded as infidels Hungarian ruler. That is, after his death,
Sigismund demanding surrender royal cities by his widow Princess Milica and
her people got a negative response, and in the perspective of the house Lazarevi
gained serious opponents. Removal of these concerns would help in interpreting the
origin of the term Rascian rebelles in the charter of Hungarian rulers emerged in
the midst of the campaign of 1389.
Key words: Hungarian attack on Serbia, 1389 year, Sigismund of Luxemburg, Prin-
cess Milica, Rascians rebelles

Summary
Vlastela was the class that provide the backbone of the Serbien armoured
cavalry. They made the effort to catch up with the metallurgy, armoury and the
weponry of the time. As usually in the medieval Europe, the source of their status
were the ownership over the land. No mether of the status or the size of the feud,
vlastela try to earned more incomes by investing in profitable agriculture buissines:
wine, fishing, honey, clearing of the forest, cattles... They basic ambicions were to
earned bether armour and wepons, but they also stimulated local economy. Lower
ranks of vlastela, vlasteliii, have a low economic level and were very vulnerable
to famine and all kinde of misery. However, it seems that only minor part of vlaste-
la, the most powerfull, velmoe, were able to have a full armour for themselves, and
their bodygards. The rest were close to lite cavalry.

Marija Koprivica
Summary
Church conditions did not get behind the dramatic political events immediately
after the Battle of Kosovo. Less than two months after the battle, Serbian church
was left without a superior, on 11th August 1989 patriarch Spiridon died. Princess
Milica managed to convoke a synod, while patriarch Spiridon was still alive, in
which some important decisions concerning the survival of the Serbian State were
brought. With the death of patriarch Spiridon, the Lazarevi family was left without
its great ally. A transitional solution was found thanks to the fact that the former
patriarch Jefrem was alive. He remained on the patriarchal throne for around a year.
It could be said that the short-term rule of Jefrem stood for the attempt of the Bran-
kovi family to come to the forefront and to make an impact on the condition of the
church. The fact that the Lazarevi family managed to convoke a new synod speaks
of their consolidation and strengthening. Patriarch Danilo III was elected. He ma-
naged the transfer of Prince Lazars relics and he was the creator of the Serbian
prince-martyr cult. The transfer of the Serbian prince-martyr relics from Pritina to
Ravanica and the creation of the new holy dynasty only strenghtened the position of
princess Milica and her sons. Danilo, as a patriarch, enthroned prince Stefan Laza-
revi and made princess Milica a nun. He died in 1396 and patriarch Sava V was
elected after him.
During the reign of princess Milica, a Hilandar monk Gerasim, Vuk Brankovi's
brother, also had a modest influence on the condition of the church. He had a pro-
minent place in the Hilandar brotherhood, while in Serbia his influence was limited.
The Brankovi family acted as patrons of Hilandar too, and in 1397. when Vuk
Brankovi died, Gerasim transfered his body to this monastery. On the other hand,
the Lazarevi family acted as patrons of the Saint Pantaleon monastery on Holy
Mountain (Mount Athos), where they contracted aderfats.
Princess Milica as nun Jevdokija continued working in the palace of her son Ste-
fan. Just before her death, she received the Great Schema and changed her name
into Jevrosima. It can be concluded that the support of the church had a large im-
pact on the survival of the Lazarevic family immediately after the Battle of Kosovo.
The division of the state between the Lazarevic and the Brankovic family reflected
on the condition of the church, but it did not undermine the integrity of the Serbian
Church.
Key words: Princess Milica, Danilo III, Gerasim Brankovi, Serbian Church.

Vladeta Petrovi
Aleksandra Fostikov
Summary
After the death of Prince Lazar, Princess Milica spent a decade and a half on
the Serbian throne (1389-1393-1405) as regent and as a co ruler. Her life was defi-
ned by several roles a descendant of Nemanji dynasty, a woman of sovereign
ruler, a princess and a regent, a co ruler, an even an abbess-princess. During this
period Princess Milica, with her sons Stefan and Vuk or alone, issued several char-
ters to Hilandar, Great Lavra of St. Athanasius, the monastery of St. Panteleimon
and Deani. Those charters are valuably source for many topics - the role of women
ktitors, Milica status or position, confirmation of previous grants. Some of them
also represent the granting of the grace (milost) necessary for the donation of foun-
dations or lands. In addition to other information those charters record the names of
eight churches and of one monastery - for some of those, this is only historical evi-
dence. Those are: Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Kukanj, Mother of
God in Holgoti, Mother of God in Buje, Church of the Holy Saviour in Hvosno,
St. Nicholas in Lab, St. Nicholas in Srebrenica, St. John the Baptist in Crkolez and
the Mother of God in Dragobilje. The name of monastery is upanjevac.

Neboja oki
At the time of the Ottoman census 1476/78. in Ljubostinja was nine monks and
they were subjected to the payment ispence. From the list is even learned that earlier
in the monastery were 30 monks exempt ispenje. A few years later, in 1481, menti-
ons Simeon abbot by Ljubostinja. In 1516, the monastery was recorded only seven
houses and six monks and one Vlach. Revenue from the monastery, together with
Mezra Tatarnom amounted to 830 akce. At the beginning of the third decade
(1521/1523. Year) recorded a revenue of 500 akce. A few years later (1528/30.)
with additional monastery was recorded only one pair. In the fourth or fifth decade
was recorded revenues of monasteries in the amount of 711 akca and monastery
inhabited by only two monks. Another abbot Simeon is mentioned in 1576. In the
census of time Murad III was logged in Ljubostinja 4 monks and income amounted
to 1000 akca. The monks were held and four water mills that were formerly in the
possession of an Mahmud. Around that time, 1581, was written in Ljubostinja one
minej efforts of abbot Simeon, who was probably the same person with the Abbot
Simeon of 1576. In one record in the narthex with the right side of the door it says
that on March 1, 1643, the priest-monk Isaiah died while in the second, not far from
the previous to the year 1673 returned to his monastery some Joanikije.
V. Petkovic claims that the late seventeenth century Ljubostinja stood among
burned monasteries but no source for his position. By all accounts this assertion is
not true because in 1691 mentioned as live monastery. The Atansije Daskal Serb
states among the 15 Serbian monasteries between them and Ljubostinja.
Ljubostinja not exist in Najpergs in the census of the year 1718 and not exist on
Epelvilc map from about the same beasts. In any case Ljubostinja from 1726 was
live monastery. Since then, and probably before until February 1736. in Ljubostinje
live abbot Arsenius. The monastery was live and 1782 and in it were hiding 1784.
Austrian intelligence. At that time, the abbot was Vikentije Jovanovic, who is with
the brotherhood fled to Srem probably the first days of May 1788. Then the
monastery was burbed by the Turks.
It was restored very quickly and to today life in him is not extinguished. Even at
the time of the collapse of the First Serbian Uprising. During the nineteenth century,
it replaces the entire line of respected elders - Arsenije Stefanovi (at least from
1819 to 1835), Meletije Markovi (1835-1847), Joanikije Maui (1847-1866),
Macarius Lapevi Milojevic (1866-1870) Danilo Markovic (1871 - 1875) and so
on. The monastery was rebuild probably in 1819 and certainly in 1850. Also, some-
time during 1860 years but it is difficult, for now, say when in any case after 1862
and before 1866. King Alexander I Obrenovi visited the monastery in 1889 during
the times of the wire to the coronation and King Peter I in June 1904.
It is necessary to emphasize that all the time in the second half of the nineteenth
century Ljubostinja was one of the wealthiest monasteries in Serbia.

Sneana Boani
Summary
Milica (Evgenia, Efrosinia) is one of the most famous women of Serbian medie-
val history. The author analyzes her character and her work from the aspect of folk
tradition. According to the tradition, she was a daughter of Jug Bogdan ( Jug Bog-
danovich), sister of Nine Jugovich brothers and Banovich Strahinja's sister-in-law.
When it comes to ones relationship with the homeland-her Jugovichs were the em-
bodiment of honor and sacrifice. Folk tradition opens up various subjects from
Princess Milicas life. She was living in an abundance. She was against of agglome-
ration of goods. She influenced and inspired Lazar in his effort to build Ravanica
Monastery. She generally disapproved disagreement between her daughters Mara
and Vukosava. She strived to calm them down. She had a special respect for her
son-in-law Milosh Obilich. She had prophetic dreams. She took news from the Bat-
tle of Kosovo with courage and dignity. She showed sadness, grief and she cried.
However, she pulled herself together quickly. Allegedly, she poisoned her brother-
in-law Vuk she issued an order to her son Stefan to kill him. Legend, often distant
from the historical truth, represents her as a devoted sister and daughter, a faithful
wife, and a loving mother.
Key words: Princess Milica, Prince Lazar, folk tradition.

Summary
The reason for the publication of this work was the discussion at the end of the
scientific meeting "Princess Milica nun Eugenia and her time that took place in
the monastery lodging of Ljubostinja monastery. Participants in this meeting pre-
sented different, and at times completely contradictory, information about the gra-
ves that were repeatedly dug in Ljubostinja, both about the grave of ktitor, Princess
Milica, and the monastic graves around the church. After this discussion, it became
clear that there is a need to gather in one place all available findings and reconsider
this issue. Available data are scattered in several publications, of which the oldest,
that specifically refers to the excavations of graves in the church of the monastery
was published more than a century ago.
Keywords: Ljubostinja, Princess Milica, burials, tombs, graves.

Summary
The continuity of development of ancient settlements is a characteristic of the
area around monastery Ljubostinja. Material remains with which we recreate the
life of ancient man in this region are not the product of archaeological excavations,
but they are random findings. Yet, the reconstruction of historical events is possible.
Collection of findings found at the site Grabak in the village Pocekovina, near Trs-
tenik, allows us to monitor the continuity, from the first contacts of Scordisci with
the Romans and the classic Roman Principate to the Late Antiquity. We conclude
about this on the basis of fibula findings. The late Latene fibula, as well as classical
Roman fibula, type fibula similar to Aucisa fibulae, highly profiled fibula, knee fibula
and the cross fibula consist the repertoire of the findings from the site Grabak.
Random findings, belt buckles and buckle equipment from the sites of hill forts
near Monastery Ljubostinja, tell us about the time of the end of the ancient way of
life, time of migrations and the emergence of the Byzantine Empire.
Keywords: Morava, Pocekovina, brooches, antique, fortifications, Gradac, early
