HIP HOP DANCE/POP DANCE COMPETITION


CONCEPT: 80’s and 90’s
I. OBJECTIVES:
1. To provide a cooperative experience through group dance competition.
2. To be able to dance with correct groove, dance gracefully and create a routine.
3. Show cooperation in performing the HIP HOP DANCE/POP DANCE during the
contest proper.

II. OVERVIEW
HIPHOP can be defined in many ways. It is a blend of different styles of street dance and
interpretations per culture that portrays the appearance, attitude, stance, music and elements of
the urban community to make it original hip hop. With every generation of new dancers and
crews, the hip hop dance evolves and continues to transform itself.
Every team will perform their ultimate dance moves in a variety of dance styles like B-
boying, Shuffling, Popping and Locking, Tutting and Krumping.

POPDANCE is a popular music sub-genre that originated in the early 1980s. It is


generally up tempo music intended for nightclubs with the intention of being danceable but also
suitable for contemporary hit radio. It is generally characterised by strong beats with easy,
uncomplicated song structures which are generally more similar to pop music than the more free-
form dance genre, with an emphasis on melody as well as catchy tunes.

A. COMPETITION CATEGORY
The competition is open to all with 10 to 15 members made up of all MALE (HIPHOP)
and FEMALE (POPDANCE) in every team who are bonafide high school student of DANHS.

B. ROUTINE LENGTH
The routine must be in a minimum of 3 minutes and a maximum of 5 minutes. Pre-
performance display is permissible up any to 20 seconds allowing the group to acknowledge the
audience and get into the opening pose. Timing of the routine begins with the first audible sound
and ends the last audible sound.

C. MUSICALITY
Music should be based on its concept. There should be 4 or more recognizable 80’s and
90’s music. It can be derived from its original composition, revived music or even remixed,
changed tempo to upbeat/slow or fast.

D. COMPETITION PERFORMANCE AREA


Groups should wear a SIMPLE COSTUMES related to 80’s and 90’s during the contest
proper. Taking any pieces of clothing during the performance is permitted provided it is not
offensive or out of character. Props maybe allowed in the performance as long as they do not
destroy the stage or dance floor or harm the other group’s performance. Body oils, body paints,
hair glitters or any other substances applied to the body are prohibited. Taps or bare feet are not
permitted.

F. PRACTICES
Practices are only allowed inside the DANHS campus during the set of scheduled signed
by Madam LAILA A. TAGUINOD. Strictly NO DANCE INSTRUCTOR!

III. JUDGING MECHANICS


a. CHOREOGRAPHY – 30 %
b. TIMING and SYNCHRONIZATION - 20 %
c. SHOWMANSHIP and DIFFICULTY of STEPS ( Confidence, Projection, Presence)
(Level 1 stunts are allowed, avoid dangerous stunts) - 25%
d. MUSICALITY ( minimum of 4 recognizable music ) - 10 %
e. MASTERY – 15 %

The judge’s verdict is decisive. Protests in whatever form, written or verbal, will not be
entertained after winners are chosen and announced.

IV. LISTOF DEDUCTIONS


2 points in a total score will be deducted if teams execute the following:
 Clothing tosses into the audience
 Route length ( over or under limit )
 Music less than 4 songs
 Using K- Pop languages and lyrics
 Music containing improper languages and lyrics
 Lewd gestures or movements
 Pre performance displayed beyond 20 seconds time limit
 Use of props that may damage the stage, floorings or may affect other groups
performance.
 Less than 3 formation changes and or less than 3 levels of movements.
 Dangerous stunts that causes accident
